@@laffin_out_loud I'm sorry you and so many other people are disappointed with this. I probably will be as well (I start watching today) but if it gets more people interested in Selena's music or watching the film, then that's at least a win.
Agree with you mate, it's not a character-driven show, all completely generic, watered down, nothing sticks. Even her romance is very surface level. The editing is terrible, loads of random shots and scenes. It looks like a major low budget show. Selena deserved better.
I see many people saying JLo was a better choise for Selena than Christian, she looked or acted btter but seriouslly guys... I think that JLo looks like JLo but with bangs😂 and nothing like Selena. There is no other person that will look the same as the beautiful Selena. She was unique. The beauty of a series is in the detaiIs, that's why I don't agree with many of the comments. There are details here in the series that maybe we never would have found out. I've seen many, many videos of Selena singing or interviews, but it's so nice to see another part of her life that meant to much to her - the relationships between her and her siblings, how she got her name, how they traveled together in a bus for many days, their ups and downs before and after a concert etc... We can't get that sort of details of her life from yt or the 1997 movie, as much as we want to. It's difficult to compare a 90 minutes film with a serie. Maybe we got to see a so little from Sel's personality but that will be developed in part 2. I personally think Christian tried really hard to give an honest and real performance on Selena - watch the behind the scenes. But yeah, that's just my opinion. I really love and admire Selena and I just found her recently - currently 23. The series was definetely created for those who want to see a full version of her life - from beginning to the end and I can't wait to watch part 2 of the series. Take care, stay safe everyone!!
Pretty much all the critics agree that it's okay but it could've been better. Now I know to curb my expectations. I was really hyped for this. Oh well...🤷♂️
I cringed the most when they had the driving scenes. The green screen just looked so cheap. They should’ve just left those out if they couldn’t do the real thing.
I’m going to disagree with you. The casting is horrible, they could have done so much better. Not saying they are bad actors, I’m just saying that they weren’t right for the roles
I totally agree with u. I had such high hopes, especially after seeing the quality of work in NETFLIX's other mini series. It felt like topics were brought up but not flushed out or would feel incomplete. Also, if you go back and watch again, you will start to notice that the same attention to details was not given to this mini series as in all the others. But then I looked up who were the people who work on this series? Maybe should start a letter writing campaign. (You know, quarantine has given us too much time on our hands.) Imagine my shock in discovering the sister is the executive PRODUCER and that the series had already gotten family's endorsement. My mind wanted to explode. Clearly, I had not seen the same mini series as they had. Now, that I'm over the initial shock, I have be the possibilities that this may have been just money grab for the family or regrettably, NETFLIX gave the family final say, but they weren't experienced enough to pull it off, or although the family wants to honor Selena, they still want keep part of her life to themselves. Unfortunately, the choppiness and the constant incomplete feeling could be examples of inexperience. Whichever the answer is, I have a message to NETFLIX. "Dear Netflix. I hope you and the families of you staff are doing well. Listen, I need you to do me a favor. Could you please put your "big boy" pants on and tell them, the family gets an "A" for effort, but it for NETFLIX's staff to work their magic. Please, don't let them ruin your reputation!!!! Og will know Christian from Ned’s declassified as Suzie crabgrass and was in twilight, cow bells, and walking dead I’m happy that she’s doing bigger things like this
She can be a great actress and have done a great job, but in terms of casting her *as Selena*, she looks nothing like her and her personality didn't shine through.
I love the 90s movie but I also liked this series. I guess mainly because it’s about Selena. Everybody loves Selena how can you not so it’s easy to love any show about her. I also thought it was a great binge. I watched it straight through.
I honestly think the show is better because you learn more about her history and how she and the band got where they were at the time. For those that say it's wack is because people hardly know anything about her or just like the movie/Jlo not Selena 🤷🏾♂️ and FYI her family was a part of the serie
Christian is beautiful but im being honest as a true Selena fan. I grew up watching n listening to her since i lived in Mexico & i didn’t get that fiery sassy, Selena in her acting. The choreography was not well, it seemed like she didn’t practice much & the lip syncing was horrid imo. Everything was very surface level like you said. But Jlo did do a way better job, in not saying she’s the only one that could play Selena but to go from a natural performer to Christian, idk. It felt rushed. The wigs and costumes looked so cheap. I liked seeing Abs side & seeing how much stress he was put under. But alot of the scenes made me feel uneasy bc of the dads persistence of doing what it took to get where he needed them to be. I didn’t learn anything new about Selena. I learned more new things about her in the book ‘To Selena, with love’ than this series.
I wouldn’t the casting is horrible like many of these people are saying - a lot of them actually resemble the original people. My biggest criticism so far; is that the main actress playing Selena, isn’t showing Selena’s true passion for life, family, fans, and all around the bright illuminating person she was. I get that people are upset she’s a “skinny chick” when real life Selena had curves and good meat on her - but c’mom guys. Imagine how hard it must be to find someone who resembles her (face being the most important) the body can be worked on. & sure they could’ve gone with a less known actress and why they never go this route, I’ll never know. Good show overall, I’m happy to be seeing one of my idols being praised and loved and seeing new folks discover her talent and story! But the story could’ve been detailed more and some of the actors could’ve shown more passion. Hoping for better for part 2
I am mostly familiar with Selena from the jlo movie but I am willing to give this a shot the casting looks good. I am not expecting it to be a masterpiece but to be enjoyable
