You can not catch a M5 with zooming in.
SL500 has no chance against the M5. 429bhp against 560bhp.
So I guess I'll continue buying BMW.

I'll always be an M power enthusiast but i gotta say this Merc is impeccable. It's not made to go missile fast, maybe an SLS AMG would do better against the BMW M5.
Geez people look at the title that clearly said autobahn. That should register in your head that people will go fast. This isn't America.
Also people oppose to speeding or drive a powerful car, go buy a smart car or go buy a moped and stick to the sidewalks.
Anyways that m5 was way to powerful, no way the sl500 is going to catch up. but nice capture though. :)

I drove all over Germany in 1972 while we lived there for a year. Of course we were in a rust bucket VW, and I stayed in that right hand lane ALL THE TIME. We were lucky to get it going 60 mph with both of us pedaling as fast as we could. Cars passing us in center and left hand lane sometimes were just blurs.
I drive a nice E320 now here in the States, but nowhere to run like in this video. Heck, I-65 from Chicago to Alabama and the Gulf, driven fpr 50 years, is now total congestion.
He is below 4000rpm on 260 kmh.

Of course the M5 is quicker but this sort of power is useless anywhere unless you want to lose your licence or die.
Der SL500 lohnt sich eigentlich so gut wie gar nicht. Man hat einen enormen Basispreis und über 400PS, ist aber im Endeffekt beim Top Speed kein Stück schneller als ein anderes Auto mit 200PS. Da ist es eher eine Verschwendung wegen der Steuern und dem Verbrauch, wenn man ohnehin nicht schneller als 250kmh kann
Wer solch ein Auto fährt macht sich keine Gedanken um die Unterhaltskosten

Viel wichtiger als Höchstgeschwindigkeit sind doch Sound, Beschleunigung und Querdynamik bei solchen Autos. Ziemlich irrsinnige Argumentation, wer es so drauf anlegt kann die Sperre auch rausnehmen und schneller fahren.

No I never had the pleasure to drive one unfortunately. I am not saying the SL500 is a bad car, vice versa, it's fantastic!
So many idiots commenting. The SL500 is very obviously limited to 155mph. It would appear the M5 has had its limiter removed, being an M5. Do you seriously think a car with that much power and torque, would top out at 255kmh at 4,000rpm and NOT be able to go any faster? Morons.
The Mercedes has a realllyyyy nice interior :)

sl63/65 will destroy that m5 or any bmw you throw at them.

The German Autobahn is great, like the German cars. ;)
This one is the new 2012 Version (R 231) which has 2 Turbo-Chargers.
There is only the SL350 which has NO Turbo. SL63 AMG and SL 65 AMG has also a bi-turbo.

There's a bit of irony over this Mercedes. Speed is in excess of 250 km/h, throttle is floored - yet the car states to be in "ECO" mode. :D
Throttle was never floored in the SL. You can see his RPMs staying consistently below 4,000. He downshifts once to get it to 5,000 but still doesn't floor it cause it never goes to redline.
Amgbenz0, it's a figure of speech, not litteral. Can we agree that it's not exactly eco-driving and eco-speeds, which is what would make sense in relation to the comment I made previously? Or would there be further semantics to elaborate on? :-)

Thanks for saying that!!! Every second comment is somthing like that, but it doesnt change anything in the video. Its a SL 500 and thats it...It is no question that the SL 500 has no chance, because the car is limited to 250 km/h. But it was fun to drive and this happend spontaneously while driving on the highway, this was not planned!
also ich muss sagen, ich bin sprachlos. sind hier nur 7 jährige die kommentare schreiben? was zur hölle ist denn hier los? jemand der einen neuen SL 500 kauft ist durchschnittlich zwischen 50 und 70 jahre alt und will zu 98% eines: luxus. dann zu 1,5% cabrio und zu 0,5% sport. ein SL ist KEIN sportwagen! sportlich ja, sportwagen NEIN, es ist und bleibt ein luxuscruiser. und JEDER luxuriöse oberklasse wagen (nicht sportwagen!) ist auf 250 kmh begrenzt. diese sperre kann man jedoch leicht entfernen lassen. ihr verwechselt einen 500er SL wohl mit einer dodge viper oder so. ein SL hat belüftete massagesitze und ein nachtsichtgerät, glaubt ihr im ernst das ist ein reiner sportwagen oder was? ihr könnt doch keinen SL mit super luxus ausstattung mit autos wie einen golf R vergleichen, wer macht denn sowas? die konkurrenten sind autos wie der jaguar XK oder das 6er BMW cabrio, LUXUS CRUISER, wir reden hier nicht von ferrari f430s, vipers oder paganis. selbst als 63 AMG ist der SL KEIN sportwagen. sportwagen setzen auf leichtbau und haben kein gestepptes leder mit kühlfunktion und arschmassage. sich beschweren weil ein 500er SL auf 250 kmh begrenzt ist, unfassbar.. dafür muss man wirklich unter 15 sein.
Dank für deinen guten Kommentar. War auch nicht unsere Absicht den M5 zu deklassieren. Würde das eher als eine Spotanaktion bezeichnen. Der M5 kam zufällig auf die Bahn. Und wir hatten auch nicht vor, ihm press am Heck zu kleben. Daher auch der Abstand. Leider glauben einige hier das sollte ein echtes Chasing werden. Aber M5 steht noch auf der Liste. KFP

No Problem, we take care of our viewers! Also with the roof down we had never problems with too much wind. The rear deflector works very well. In the SLK, which we drive earlier, the deflector wasnt so good.
haha lol BMW M5..... It can't even get away from a Jaguar XFR which is half the cost, has only 8 cylinders (vs 10), a smaller engine and only 510 bhp. haha. Nice Mercedes :D
Genau so ist es. Das ganze war auch keine geplante Aktion von uns, wir waren einfach auf der Autobahn unterwegs und es kam zufällig ein M5 vorbei. Haben dann spontan entschieden mal bisschen hiterher zu fahren und dann hatten wir alle ein wenig Spass (zum Glück hat der M5 mitgemacht) ;) Sind beides wirklich super Autos, M5 steht auch auf unserer Liste für die nächsten Videos!

That might have been a cool video if THE LAME holding the camera kept the Beamer in the SAME shot w/the gauges... -Or at least steadied the camera enough to share the smoothness of these beautiful cars.

yes he is limited. Check the 3500 rotations by 250. also air to up.

gusy, the M5 was not going to the limits, other ways the Sl500 has no chance versus M5
German Highways have no limitations for top speed (I think its the only country in the world). Only if there is a sign that shows you the max. permitted speed in this area, its limited. So you can go to the top speed of your car without any problems. Of course the traffic allows it.
The good thing about the SL Roadster is, it has a hardtop. It isnt loud in the car! Feels like you are driving a normal limo. Often you didn't realize how fast you really are ;)
The sign which appears on the left side at 2:15 indicates the start of an unrestricted area ;)

Sorry, I have no information about that. I could only say that the car easily reaches the 250 km/h! I have seen a car from Lorinzer with only minimum Chip Tuning that runs 280 km/h also LIMITED.
Nice Cars. This is nice last 9 years when I was driving to England I was pasing via those two tunnels . I love that autobahn you go to Koln and Frankfurt and then up and down and ICE is on your right sight. I must say amazing both cars :). I'll be passing there last time around 5.11 shade :(. That was nice 250 and 3 800 rpm :D I do that with 180 and that is max. I do have 1.3 90PS engine but this was amazing nice fun you had guys :)
The SL 63 will put up a very even fight, but don't introduce the SL65 because you are adding 4 more cylinders into the race and well that wouldn't be even haha, all of these cars are great btw haha!

Highway = Bundesstrasse, Speedlimit 100km/h = 62mph
Freeway/Motorway = Autobahn, No generally speedlimit, voluntary 130km/h = 81mph

Torque:
M5 (680nm) < SL500 (700nm)
Both are great cars!
In the video it says 435 PS on the SL 500, this is stock! 560 PS has the M5...
I could follow them in my Audi A5 3.0 tdi since were all limited to 250 xD

Also wir sind vor kurzem den BMW M3 gefahren - wovon auch bald Videos online kommen - und waren nach dem SL irgendwie enttäuscht von dem Auto. Glaube unsere Messlatte war auch etwas zu hoch angesiedelt, gerade weil die Medien das Auto immer total hypen. Dieser brachiale Kick bei der Beschleunigung vom SL aufgrund seiner Bi-Turbo NM hat beim M3 komplett gefehlt. Wobei er richtig Spass gemacht hat auf der Autobahn, da war nämlich nicht bei 250 Schluss. M5 ist aber wieder eine andere Hausnummer...
no! if it's the sl 63 or sl 65, it will definitely smoke m5 in the straight line, we are talking about sl 500 here and that is truly not enough to chase the m5
No limits my friend. But only in some places and obviously always on Autobahns. There is a nice autobahn documentary over there in UA-cam.

That Benz really is limited. It will do 290-300 real GPS without a limiter is my guess.
4, 6 l v8 biturbo 435hp 700 nm circa 1, 7 kg. 4, 6 vs 4, 4 sek and thats the sl eco mode. Sl can not win, but he has a good chance. M5 is a Performance Car. Sl a streetversion. Sl wars unlimited tested with over 300km/h. Unterstand me M5 is awesome, but Sl is not so bad.
