The year was 2004. I was 27yrs old, married with two young kids and I loved metal. One day I happened to catch the song "Blood and Thunder" by some band called Mastodon on some shitty music TV station I was watching. I instantly loved them and bought Leviathan, then Blood Mountain in 2006.
Back then the internet wasn't quite the place it is today as far as music "sharing" and whatnot, it was basically in it's infancy so I didn't really care too much about looking up new music, I bought CDs like everybody else and I was fine with that.
But as the years went by and music TV started to disappear, I did start getting into the early phases of UA-cam, but it wasn't the same in regards to coming across new music. On TV, every now and then you would come across a new band you never heard of before, and sometimes...just sometimes...they'd be good...a la...Mastodon.
Well, after that point in my life, "life" of course, went on. A lot of things changed over the years...and I mean A LOT. Life just "happens", and the things that you had once used to do, change into entirely different things.
Jump to 2022. I'm divorced. My kids are adults...and for the past 15yrs I had totally forgot about Mastodon!
It was actually my 26yr old son who said to me the other day(because he remembered seeing CDs as a kid), "hey Dad, have you seen the new Mastodon video?". A flash of fire and a bolt of lightening then hit me and I thought to myself "Fuck! I totally forgot about fucking Mastodon!". We watched "More Than I Can Chew" and I was blown away. They have progressed in unbelievable ways and it's almost hard to fathom how amazing they've got.
Long story short...I now get to listen to 7 brand new,(to me), Mastodon albums! I think I'm on day 73 of nothing but Mastodon...AND best of all...this happened at a point in my life when I desperately needed to hear this music. Every song is like a fucking epiphany in regards to my life over the last 15yrs. I have been resurrected, and Mastodon has been my savior.

Thanks for sharing your story, and I hope you, myself and all of us can look forward to many years of more awesome albums from these absolute masters. Thank God for Mastodon in today's musical wasteland. I found Mastodon after they had released Leviathan and have been following them ever since. They are what metal needed back then and have been ever since. So far they haven't disapointed me with any of their albums. Sure, Leviathan and especially Blood Mountain will forever have a special place in my heart, but the way they've grown and progressed feels like it's totally in line with my own progression as a man. They are mature enough to explore the complexity of human emotions and the melodies that best represents them, taking their music into any and all places whenever they feel it needs to. Many metal bands get stuck in a very macho oriented way of thinking and writing but Mastodon is so much more. There's a pure love of music constantly present in their songs but they still manage to remain really heavy and agressive. They are by far the best true metal band in the world and have been for years. There are basically three bands that I listen to that has stuck with me through the years and they are Tool, Mastodon and Baroness. If you twisted my arm I would probably say Tool is my favourite band of all time but you would have to twist it pretty hard because Mastodon is up there, next to them. I went to Germany and saw Tool live in april and it was amazing. Best live show I've ever seen and I wouldn't be surprised if it will be the best show I ever see. And 2 months ago I found out that I had missed a live performance by both Mastodon and Baroness here in Sweden 😱😭 I could have seen my three favourite bands, all in the same year, within just a few months... Baroness is not even close to being as big as Tool or Mastodon so having the chance to see both Mastodon and Baroness at the same gig here in Sweden is just an opportunity I probably will never get again. I have seen Mastodon live two times but never Baroness, so hopefullt I'll get the chance again some day.

@@callum6224 It wasn't as easy as it is today and it definitely wasn't as well known or as popular. Mainstream culture then was just starting to hear of music sharing sites because of Napster. CD's were still the main way of how people got their music.

ha, similar for me. A friend invited me to a Mastodon show in 2004, and I had never heard of them before. I was hooked, bought a shirt, listened to Leviathan all day. Life happened, I totally forgot about them until 2014, when I stumbled across Once More 'Round the Sun. Mind blown. Came just in the right moment in my life. Some of those songs struck a chord deep in me. Since then my partner and me and recently even our preschool kid are total fans. These musicians have probably no idea what their art means to us.

Mastodon are completely fresh. They are faithful to their creative vision and fearless in the exploration of what is possible for them. There are precious few bands who achieve this. I would like to see them live to confirm my impression of their excellence, but I suspect that they deliver on stage just as well as in the studio.

    Pain With an Anchor

    Lyrics
    Share these lyrics
    Oh, my dear
    Look what we've done here
    My greatest fear
    A pain with an anchor
    The taste of defeat
    Oh, my dear
    Look what we've come to
    We've shattered serene
I've turned the grief to medicine
    Into my mouth will enter
The hardest pill I've ever had to swallow down
    As karma whispers
    Oh my dear
    The damage is done here
    I disappear
    A love with no anchor
In the depths of the sea
I've turned the grief to medicine
    Into my mouth will enter
The hardest pill I've ever had to swallow down
The crux lyrics Another sinking stone
    Finds its way down below
Resurface when only light will ever show
    And while I progress slow
    I'm soon to surpass you
Entitled to all possessions I have adored
    I feel pressure
    I feel the pressure
    And all the faded bones
    Piling up high and low
Returning to life once you can stand alone
Don't get too close this time
The depths of love haunt you
It's dark inside where all my demons hide
    I feel pressure
    I feel the pressure
    Waiting with patience of eons
Your presence fades into a memory
Underneath a cloud of silence, you journey into the rift
Will time defy the weight of you leaving us?
    I feel pressure
    I feel the pressure
    Hold aggression
Hold aggressionMore Than I Could Chew
    /
    Lyrics
Will there ever be a moment I won't feel this heat coming up from ground?
Will there ever be a time when I can show myself through open doors?
All I need is you to tell me how to reconcile this guilt and shame
I've already ripped myself to pieces and I've given it away
All the weight lies upon my shoulders from
    The great disruption
It's hard to breathe inside these waves of doubt
    Tidal distraction
Can you tell me how to wish away this chaos making my head spin?
Can you tell me how to soothe the savage beast locked up inside these walls?
Will there ever be a place that I can hide and heal these open sores?
Or do I have to cut them out and eat them as my people adore?
All the weight lies upon my shoulders from
    The great disruption
It's hard to breathe inside these waves of doubt
    Tidal distraction
I have, I have lost my way
    Reaching, reaching for today
I have, I have lost my way
    Reaching, reaching for today
    Say when
    And I'll come running back
    Say when
    And I'll come running back
    Say when
    And I'll come running back
    Say when
And I'll come running backThe Beast
    /
    Lyrics
    I'm out of my mind
    In pictures of past lives
    Trapped in a memory
    In fragments of time
The way things used to be
And find a better way to get back home
    Reaching for something new
    That's just not there anymore
'Cause you know that it's gone
You slip away to the distance
Pass a crack of light in the floor
I hear the sound of mischief
As the promising light shines some more
I paid you in fool's gold, and I don't owe you anymore
And I deserve nothing I find
Like a mountain of pain on the floor
    Losing ground
    Taken by a prophecy
    Siren sounds
    Calling for your sanctity
    Wipe away
    The blood from your face
All I see is our demise
    Headed for the blackened skies
    And I need more time
    I still hear
    The beast is breathing
Should I fall upon my sword?
    Make sure they know
    That I fought for them
    Make sure they know
    They know I tried
    I scraped and clawed
    I gave my all
    Stars in the distance
Oh, how they tell a story of my life
    And tell us to beware
    Repeating the past
Nature is nocturnal and that is that
And I spend my days underground covered in ash and smothered in dirt
And you know how it hurts this little clown
Pay no attention to the sound of the beast
'Cause you know it can't hurt you when you're with meSkeleton of Splendor
    /
    Lyrics
    You reached two hands outward
    Two birds spreading our wings
    Today's arms turn numb
    When I turn it inward
We live and breathe all your thousand words
Now you sleep, we'll finish your work
    To my detriment
    To my detriment
    To my detriment
    (I forge ahead unscarred)
    To my detriment
    You painted us with effort
    Always praising us high
The day has come to face the storm
As lightning strikes me in two
We live the dream, onward as it were
Endless days, we'll carry on as one
There's no doubt of what we're here to do
You laid it out, a promise of yourself
    To my detriment
    To my detriment
    (I forge ahead unscarred)
    To my detriment

    Lyrics
    Within a bruised heart
    I'll just say when
    Just one time before
    It will come again
    Little voice inside
    Inside my head
Tell me when it's time to turn around again
    All appears to fade away
    I can see your face
    And I feel the pain
And I feel the shame that I have let you down again
    People everywhere
    Not a drop to drink
Not a dare to think about the damage I have done
Try to give up what weighs
    What weighs you down
    The only control you have
    Is all your own
Do I fit the pieces together again
Or do I leave them lying on the floor?
    All appears to fade away
    I can see your face
    And I feel the pain
And I feel the shame that I have let you down again
    People everywhere
    Not a drop to drink
Not a dare to think about the damage I have done
    Leaving you behind
Is the hardest thing I've done
Asking where did I go wrong?
I wonder what all of this makes
    Does fortune favor the bold?
I only know that leaving you
    Was the hardest thing
    To cut and run
    I can see your face
    And I feel the pain
And I feel the shame that I have let you down again
    People everywhere
    Not a drop to drink
Not a dare to think about the damage I have donePushing the Tides
    /
    Lyrics
I think I'm ready to start
I thought I heard you scream
We're all part of this fucked up devastation
    (Go)
    Always spinning the wheels
    A greater vision in sight
It's not failure if you're trying
    Another prick of the thorn
    Her body reaches deep
    As I choke the situation
    Seeming clever and wise
    Clouded beyond the dark cells
I know not what drips inside me
    Pushing the tides
Trying not to go down and taken under
    Pushing the tides
Try to keep my head above the water
    You try untying the weight
    And you continue to breathe
    I remove you for protection
And where to go from here
A place you value the most
    Such a brilliant realization
    Pushing the tides
Trying not to go down and taken under
    Pushing the tides
Try to keep my head above the water
    Pushing the tides
    Leading us to prevail
    And all we desire

    Lyrics
    The night I went under
And there was no one around
    Nothing to swim to
Not the sky, not the ground
I heard you speak to me
And said to, "Just go down"
    Swept away
    In peaceful tranquility
I wish that I could stay
    And I keep on waiting
    For someone to save me
I keep waiting for someone to ask me, "What is your name?"
    Swept away
    In peaceful tranquility
I wish that I could stay
    I've seen worse before
    I've had trouble breathing
    I've had scrapes and scars
    Healing from lacerations
    Bending from days on end
I get up and walk away
Through all the lies I told before
Well now, they've all come true
Never mind this screaming in the cold
And when I caught a glimpse of you
You were laughing at me and looking away
And I did everything I could
To try to get you to stay
    I pass through dimensions
    And leaving this plane
    Turning into the ether
    It changes everything
    Swept away
    In peaceful tranquility
I wish that I could stay
    I can't hear at all
    I've had trouble speaking
    Will this heal my heart?
    Relive the never-ending
    Bending for days on end
I'll get up and walk awayDagger

    Lyrics
I cannot bare to believe that you have left this Earth
I couldn't stare as they covered you up with dirt and left
    With all the best intent
    And all your eloquence
The price we paid to know you
Your smile is stretching from the stars
I am still standing here in solace
    I sense the writhing
    Peeling off your skin
    As the coals burn
    We'll walk on fire
    The lines you carved remain
    Too many days to remember
Too many times have I tried
The price we paid to know you
The price we paid to know you
A dark shadow was cast with your departure
Now dig our way out from this mudslide and survive
    With all the best intent
    And all your eloquence
The price we paid to know you
    Projecting light from beyond
We stare until the bruises soften
    Never will there
    Be another you
    As the Sun turns
    We hold you tighter
    The final curtain calls
How many ways you brought pleasure
How many nights you brought to life
The price we paid to know you
The price we paid to know you

    Mastodon - Dictionary description
    Noun
    1. A massive, elephantlike mammal of the genus Mammut (Mastodon), that flourished worldwide from the Miocene through the Pleistocene epochs and, in North America, into recent times, having long, curved upper tusks and, in the male, short lower tusks.
    2. A person of immense size, power, influence, etc.
The second description is definitely the better fit. But the first also works if you've had half a litre of whisky, have a next level imagination, or a mixture of both.

Yeah it's always very difficult when the other person, or in this case the other people in a relationship leave your dull, unimaginative, self absorbed ass behind, seek to evolve spiritually, emotionally, intellectually and artistically, effectively to progress, to evolve as individuals and as a group. Essentially consciously choosing to take a chance, bow before the universe, cast egomaniacal illusion and self-preserving delusion aside, as again they bow before THE universe, and lean headlong into seeking the light cascading out from the shadowy abyss which weaker man dare not enter. And simultaneously ever consciously away from the absurd, " fix" seeking, fanatical narcissist, who demands they remain the way they were, which satisfies that individual 1st and foremost, as does a pacifier or breast milk to an insatiable infant, simply to maintain and protect their own need or demand for appeasement or control...

There is a parallel here in what Mastodon is becoming with the band opeth-- the soft, melodic & eerie with the dark, heavy elements intertwined.
I started listening to opeth around Blackwater Park and Mastodon around Blood Mountain. I prefer each band's work going forward on from these respective points in time. On both albums you can hear the shift to be heavy but melodic; increasingly complex shades, the timing and build in a song with the light / dark bits; always pushing, growing, maturing. Both bands have continued this trend and both have alienated those fans who demand they remain static entities while at the same time pleasing those fans who enjoy the dynamism.

I never understand when people say that Mastodon aren’t as heavy now as they were on Leviathan. The way people talk about Leviathan is that is was so extreme …it isn’t. Plenty of songs and hushed and grim are heavy like on Leviathan. I personally didn’t like Once more round the sun or Emperor of sand.
