Alright music nerds.. we need to talk. Lol. Around 32 min in this video, Brent is tracking the outro to “more than I could chew”. What really blew my mind was the producer translating the 9/8 count for him by dropping the first quarter note beat and counting up to 4 for his cue to re-enter playing. This was super super cool and shows just how knowledgeable the producer here is. He took a complex idea and made it super easy for the musician to grasp it in a fast paced studio environment where the don’t get a lot of practice before laying it down. Edit: spelling error

I've known them since 1997. Met Troy and Brent that year, and played some shows with FHF. When they became Mastodon I attended all the local shows they played, and they're the same dudes today. Total sweethearts. I was at a show in Hickory when they did an off night on the Clutch tour early on, and Troy told me a story about Pepper Keenan playing a copy of Remission for James Hetfield, and James asked for the copy. Pepper told him "No." Troy and Brent both said, "Why didn't you give him the damned copy?!?!". They've progressed so much since the beginning, and I always look forward to each album they release. Always gold.
omg I love the metallica skit toward the end is great, when Troy talks about the studio being nocturnal they are making fun of a Metallica documentary where they say and are doing the same thing waiting for lars to play drums lmao
51:30, It indeed helped so many of us, I'm sure. My dad passed away last December 29th in hospice after battling brain cancer (Just as Bills mother). He was diagnosed in September 2021 whilst I was overseas, due to covid restrictions I couldn't travel back home until October, I ended up booking flights on October 29th, coincidentally was the day the album was released. Whole album became my most listened of the whole year in the span of just two months. Songs like Dagger, had it all, Skeleton of Splendour, Gobblers of Dregs, Tear drinker, really hit close to heart. The whole album really conveys the load of emotions that comes with the illness & passing of a beloved one; sorrow, mourning, grief, nostalgia, etc. That part in Gobblers of Greg: “Waiting For the sun to rise So I can Say my last goodbye All that I needed from you was your warm embrace” was literally what happened with my father before his passing, he was very weak already the night before, he could’ve passed any minute, in a dark room with no one around, nevertheless, is as if he waited for my mother, my grandfather his sisters and I to be there at the time he was ready to let go. I sat next to him and hugged him as he passed away.. The week before his passing I also translated the lyrics from had it all and told him the story of this album as well, he shed tears... Bill, Brent, Troy, Brann, thank you all for this beautiful album, it sure did help me get through one of the roughest patches of my life and im sure I wasn’t the only one.
These skits had me dying laughing. I love how this video blends the silliness of the members with the more serious musical parts that are focused on the album. Great video, I love this band!
They have so many amazing albums and they've only been around 21 years. The Hunter was the closest they've come to " Lets just make a fun album with no concept " and it's still an outstanding album.
I love these documentaries because we get a look at the process and reasons behind yalls incredible music. The Beast is by far my favorite song on the album
I've been following Mastodon since Crack the Skye, and fell in love with it more than I can put into words... Have enjoyed everything they have put out since but nothing stands out in the same way. This album didn't click with me after a few listens but after watching this I'm going to give it the time it deserves. Great documentary.
From Spain, I love you all, I watched you play in Resurrection Fest for the first time and it was absolutely wonderful... Kinda felt the connection with your music, with every little thing I learn about your art and personalities it feels more and more genuine. Thank you so much for sharing this with us, I'm glad to be a part of this family, Mastodon for life ❤️

Funny how I discovered this band through Alice in chains and they became my all time favourite band. I love you Mastodon! Thank you for all the great music. It really has gotten me through the hardest times in my life.
I'm the biggest AIC fan since 1990, and discovered Mastodon by accident around 2012. I didn't noticed the connection until 2020, when they played "Again" on the MoPOP Founders Awards. Suddenly it clicked.
I'm 36 and I recently discovered this band with the song - "More Than I Could Chew" and I fell in love with this band. For the melody of the guitars and beautiful vocal lines. It's nice when you live and it seems that you won't discover anything new in rock music and suddenly find something new. I was deluded. Best regards from Russia
Their 'making of' videos are the best. I love the creative process and these guys are so open and fun about their process even though its clearly hard af.
I had it all, and I watched it all. My favorite band since Hushed and Grim. Been in my Top3 for like 15 years now. Always a bloody fight to be on top of that hill. You guys have grown and become more and more virtuoso. Love to put it on when I am cleaning the house or mowing the lawn. It's also like a Golden Dagger I just have to present to people with bad taste in metal and they quickly understand that their taste is way inferior. It's so nice to have Hushed and Grim in this world, right on makes it a better place. Cheers guys!
I can’t love this album enough. I thought nothing, nothing would top Blood Mountain - an album not only near and dear to my heart but a book mark in my own musical journey…Hushed and Grim is the very definition of music as an experience ❤️
I saw the dons on the tour for leviathan back in the day with Nick on guitar. I’ve been a huge fan since ‘remission’ and I’m very grateful they are still making great music ❤
I listened to this album over and over and read Thorgal graphic novel, and it fit for some reason. I havent done something like that since i was a kid. Its so weird how an experience like that will be implanted. This album has it all, I am still digesting it
Going to Ashes of the Leviathan tonight and this has already made my day! Everyone involved in this documentary thank you for bringing this to us the fans ! 🎉
This album is beautiful. It’s a masterpiece and another brilliant incarnation from a band that continues to mesmerise. Even singing “you had it all” out loud brings a tear to my eye. Well done boys and thank you.
Love the Lars Ulrich “a year and a half” homage when they talk about waiting for Brann to start record in the drums hahaha. He is even wearing the grey bathrobe 😂
I sat with my father during his last days, helping to look after him. Hushed and Grim describes that perfectly. He also had cancer, and so did my mom. The Emperor of Sand made his way through my family too. Now that I know the inspiration of this album, I will listen with much more appreciation.
I love this album so much! Whenever I listen to it, it never feels like it’s 90 minutes long. I enjoy seeing the making of the album too. We really get to see everyone’s contributions & what makes the music so authentic. You’re a great group of guys who collaborate so well with one another. I’m looking forward to more great music from Mastodon.

Crack the skye honestly changed my life at 17 years old, It completely changed my view of music and how I played guitar. I lost a friend during that time and it really helped me grieve and since then I’ve loved all their albums old and new, every single song. These guys help me heal, so grateful for their music ❤
This is the power of art, taking negative energy and converting it into a blissful reincarnation that transcends reality. This is what every artist should strive to do, like these guys do. Every time. They take coal and make it a diamond.
I was just part of recording an album, it's cool to see another band's perspective on the writing process. Especially Mastodon! Keep em coming my brothers. Can't wait to see you live next month in NY and can't wait to hear some new stuff!
Thanks for another great "making of" documentary. I've been a fan since I first heard Blood and Thunder forever ago. Mastodon never disappoints. I'm a fan for life.
For 1 hour and a half I am thinking a lot of things to comment. Briefly I will say kudos for a great album (again), kudos for honoring the person who managed to make the band known to and loved by so many people and thank you for being honest and real. Watching these making of videos make me cry and laugh at the same time. Seeing this band live is in my bucket list and I also hope they stay active and productive for another 21 years.
I grew up in Decatur and spent alot of time in little 5 Points and used to see alot of street bands playing and remember how awesome it was to stop on my skateboard and listen. I wonder if anyone from Mastodon was there.
My God I absolutely love this band’s artistic talent, spirit and style. Once in a blue moon a band will come along that redefines a genre and immortalizes itself. I’ve owned every album and they just keep getting better and better. These videos are fantastic. Thanks Mastodon for the many years of great music! 🤘🔥🔥🔥
Bet you can't guess what my fav band is. So amped up to see them using a line 6 Helix. Thank you for sharing this with us for free. This is what makes me want to go to shows and purchase physical copy of the album.

Never met Mastadon nor have I been fortunate enough to see them live, I've been a fan since the early 2000s and I've never stopped. Glad I finally got to sit down and watch this doc, I always watch their making of videos. This is the only band you feel like you're family and somewhat apart of after listening to them and following their music and hardships for so long. The music sounds amazing but the lyrical impact has always drawn me in. Thanks for keeping on keeping on fellas, so that I can too, and giving us a front row seat to your music and personal lives, hard to do but very much respected and appreciated 🤘🍻

This is the comment that I was looking for lol love the reference
A Year & a Half In The Life Of Metallica!! 😂😂
😂 Absolutely!
Went to their gig in Zagreb this year and can be certain that was best show I've ever seen. Can't wait to see them live again!
They put themselves in everything, even a documentary. Awesome sketches and references
Their music is transcending honestly. Emperor of Sand and Hushed and Grim are 2 absolutely amazing albums. Got to see them live AGAIN!
Definitely my favorite albums by them
51:30, It indeed helped so many of us, I'm sure.
These lads have been through so much. Loved every album and hearing them change musically over the years!
They have so many amazing albums and they've only been around 21 years. The Hunter was the closest they've come to " Lets just make a fun album with no concept " and it's still an outstanding album.
I love hunter really much
@@skippityblippity8656 ME too. It's one of my faves. Not sure why people don't care for it.
The Hunter had a MASSIVE concept. Brent's brother in law died in a hunting accident.
Love this "behind the scenes" stuff. You can learn soo much by watching how a great band of this caliber works in the studio.
The clowns. Well, Brann is DEFINITELY mad as a box of frogs.
Excellent.
Hushed & Grim is great. Wasn't keen at first, but grew to love it.
".....Brann is DEFINITELY mad as a box of frogs......"
Don't you mean Brett?
@@Baribrotzer don't you mean Troy?
Mastodon you HAVE to love them
I like that they got the serious stuff out of the way upfront and then the rest of the film is just constantly laugh out loud hilarious.
This is an insanely good album, and I'm glad I had the opportunity to see behind the curtain with this. Thank you!
I love these documentaries because we get a look at the process and reasons behind yalls incredible music.
The Beast is by far my favorite song on the album
Was hoping we'd get to see some footage of Marcus King playing that epic "Beast" of a solo.
Hushed and Grim is one of your best! In a whole discography of pure bangers its hard to stand out but this album still manages to!
I just wanna say this: Thank you Mastodon for making my life better with this masterpiece album
Thank you so much for sharing this with us, I'm glad to be a part of this family, Mastodon for life ❤️
I just love how Mastodon has their own recording studio right now - they deserve to have that kind of comfort 👍🤘
"Hushed and Grim" is an *absolute* masterpiece, I'm prepared to fight anyone who says otherwise 😁
Mastodon speaks to *so* many people in *so* many ways. Methinks it would take an eternity for all of us to thank them. 💜
I concur and yes I to will fight anyone who dares disagree with us 😂😂
I got yer back boy!! 💪🤜🤜🤯
Eh it's ok🤣
Its kind of a boring album and pretty mellow. Need heavier and more grooving jams from them. The album I'd give a 5.5/10
@@JohnCena-kn9tv Its a mature album made by some of the best players in Rock and Roll, on par with Pale Communion by Opeth. If you find it boring, made you should try K-Pop or something...
I know it's corny I know doesn't matter but I feel like I need to say it. This album some how change my life. It pushed me through a breaking point I was experiencing and I made serious positive changes. I am so thankful that you guys created this album. Thank you.
Not corny at all
Funny how I discovered this band through Alice in chains and they became my all time favourite band.
Same story here
Love how the album starts with a massive drum fill.
A big f u to all the brann dailor naysayers!
Simply put…Hushed and Grim is a MASTERPIECE.
🤘🏻🦣🤡✊🏼
Love the Lars Ulrich “a year and a half” homage when they talk about waiting for Brann to start record in the drums hahaha. He is even wearing the grey bathrobe 😂
Thank you! This is exactly what the fans wanted when you guys released those shorter behind the scene clips on the making of this great album.
Loved this video. I now have a whole new appreciation for the band. I'll be digging into the discography. Thanks for this!!
Guys, I'm very sorry for the loss of your Manager. He handled you exactly as you would want and need. Just keep your heads up and lean on each other. Love ya guys
I've been through loss and tragedy and I felt this album deeply. One of the best albums ever IMO!!!!
Troy being all excited about his mom jamming with Mastodon is peak wholesomeness. Love it!
One of the few bands that just gets so much better with every album! Points for Bill’s Fantômas shirt
Crack the skye honestly changed my life at 17 years old, It completely changed my view of music and how I played guitar. I lost a friend during that time and it really helped me grieve and since then I’ve loved all their albums old and new, every single song. These guys help me heal, so grateful for their music ❤
It's very rare to find some good music these days ..Thx guys!! 👌🤘
I absolutely love that they just keep growing with each new record, and always bring something brand new to the table
I’d love to see them in a theater setting, where they’d play EoS and this album, back to back!👍😎🔥
Thanks for another great "making of" documentary. I've been a fan since I first heard Blood and Thunder forever ago. Mastodon never disappoints. I'm a fan for life.
This album went hard as hell. Saw them in San Diego. Lost my shit. Excellent album, dudes
I Love this band so much. So inspirational and amazing musicians
I grew up in Decatur and spent alot of time in little 5 Points and used to see alot of street bands playing and remember how awesome it was to stop on my skateboard and listen. I wonder if anyone from Mastodon was there.
Best album I’ve ever heard IT IS A MASTERPIECE
My God I absolutely love this band’s artistic talent, spirit and style. Once in a blue moon a band will come along that redefines a genre and immortalizes itself. I’ve owned every album and they just keep getting better and better. These videos are fantastic. Thanks Mastodon for the many years of great music! 🤘🔥🔥🔥
This album is a masterpiece ✨️
Bet you can't guess what my fav band is. So amped up to see them using a line 6 Helix. Thank you for sharing this with us for free. This is what makes me want to go to shows and purchase physical copy of the album.
Hushed & Grim has a fantastic album story and the creation process looks to be just as fantastic. I'm just blown away by how well Mastadon go from album to album.
You can tell these guys really loved their manager. He made these man a legendary unit.
I love these guys, regular guys enjoying making tunes. I've listened to Mastodon for a long time now, this album is a masterpiece
I haven't watch a second of this yet but know its going to be great! I was waiting/hoping for a 'making of' on this record, as they have done in the past. Thank you Mastodon
The album is a masterpiece. Thank you for the wonderful music!
44:15 - damn, Troy's voice is so good. So unique.
Dude, if Brent put out a blues album that would be awesome.
Mastodon is so much more than a metal band. Every album is better than the last one which itself was RAD. Very rare. Great riffs, great hooks.
Mastodon, Gojira, Slipknot those 3 for me are legit medicine and I'll forever support these 3 bands because what they have done for me and im sure many of you is therapeutic and can't put a price on the happiness they have given me.
It's Mastodon, Gojira, and Opeth for me.
Mastodon,Tool, and Opeth for me! Gojira and Slipknot a very close 4th and 5th
It's Mastodon, Allman Brothers, and Diablo Swing Orchestra for Me.
Beautiful documentary. These guys have progressed, musically, like non other. Love every album but there is such a feeling to this one that hits the heart and causes my hair to stand evrytime I listen to the Album.
Baaaahahahaah the Year And A Half Of references are GREAT!!!! “Oh my god, Jesus, I’m washing my hands”….I’m dyin.
1:11
Wait, Bill actually has AJ Fosik's The Hunter sculpture in his home? Awesome.
Who went back and listened to the album from front to back and had a better perspective of it?
One of the very few double albums it's possible to listen to in one go - and has no "better" half.
I did
Never met Mastadon nor have I been fortunate enough to see them live, I've been a fan since the early 2000s and I've never stopped.
