It's nice to have confidence in knowing that when a band releases something, you're going to love it. Mastodon will never let me down. You know a band is good when you want their entire catalog.
While I appreciate what Mastodon has done, I can still never get over their early work. Lifesblood, Remission, Leviathan, and Call of the Mastodon are my favorites. Call of the Mastodon and the Replases sampler disc for that album is what got me into High on Fire, Pig Destroyer, Burst, and Cephalic Carnage. My teenage years sucks byt the music was excellent. Man I miss those times.
i dont know if you're talking to me, i misread your comment and thought u were disagreeing with me even though you said "its all subjective".. either way its interesting how personal and hostile your reply was, considering this was nothing more than a meaningless discussion over particulars concerning music genre's. i always think of fellow mastodon fans as people like me.. people i like and could get along with.... i guess not.
Listen to Today Is The Day's 'In the Eyes of God' album. Brann and Bill played on that record. Phenomenal stuff, so glad I was able to see that lineup play back in '99-00. I was forever a HUGE Brann fan after seeing that live!
This album was the first time I ever heard of Mastodon, way back in the early 2000's I believe. I had never heard of them and only got the album for the cover art. Glad I did though...
@@shillian4770 yes, and these same 9 songs make up Mastodon's first demo. The versions on the demo are different recordings with the band's original vocalist, Eric Saner.
Damn it! I'm not sure what it is about 'Thank you for this', but it sounds to me like a bunch of heavy and epic break-downs, all mixed together. Feels like it's an incomplete song. Yet, somehow, it's amazing as it is. Probably, I'd just wanted it to have even more of those weird, odd-tempos added to it. Always got me loving those (Aqua dementia, black tongue, chimes at midnight, etc).
No joke, this came on next after a Weird Al song I was listening to. I haven’t listened to this album in a while, so I enjoyed the detour. Gotta love the UA-cam algorithm.

One Album better than the other (The Hunter ..OMG , Crack the skye , the new one is Burning deep into my brain too..) I mean ...COME ON !!!
Yea Remission was the best possible progression from these songs, the way I usually describe this album is sonic schizophrenia it’s badass and really dark but a little too manic, but that’s what made Mastodon great, their energy, it just needed to be dialed in and Remission was that.
I still remember how giddy I was to see "Ex-Lethargy" attached to a band. I mean, I still prefer Lethargy, but the first few Mastodon releases definitely delivered.
I was more fond of the original EPs. These remasters fucked with my head in the way the guitars aren't as present, and the vocals are turned up. But still great nonetheless.
You know, whenever I say I haven't liked anything since Crack the Skye people act like I'm speaking blasphemy. Then I listen to this album and know they'll never understand.
Honestly though I can see some of their new stuff being a mixed bag. I personally enjoy most of it, but it's not everyone's cup of tea. Although Emperor of Sand looks fucking astounding. We'll see though.
Only stupid moral and social warriors over-praise new releases acting politically correct and bash fans who are actually honest and tell them the harsh truth: the old records are better. No other way around it.
Anyone know what albums these are drawn from? This is may be the heaviest single album I've been able to find, and it's a compilation... so maybe the source albums are even more of this good stuff! Please point me to them :)
These 9 songs originally made up Mastodon's first demo album, which featured Eric Saner on vocals. After he left the band, they re-recorded the vocals, and the new versions were released as the EPs "Slick Leg" and "Lifesblood." This compilation features the same recordings as those EPs, but the tracks were remastered and had samples removed for this release.
The only thing that changed was the vocals, dudes. And they added more stuff to their sound. Stop being sich crybabies. Listen to Welcoming War and then to Andromeda. Similar vibe. Amazing band.
No. New stuff seems like alternative rock in several aspects. Stop being a social Warrior and open your eyes. In 10 years we'll be still listening to Leviathan. But Emperor or sand... Nobody will mention it.
first off.Mastodon is my favourite band. This album is far from bad,but in my opinon it suffers from crowded musical ideas and when that happens nothing reall stands out. Since human brain can only concentrate at 1 or 2 things at a time. The production is where it suffers most. Keep in mind again this is just my opinon i may be wrong. Drums are a bit too loud. Too manny frequencies colliding (this could be fixed with precise eq) Too much stuff happening in the drums(this is just Brann being Brann tho hahaaha)
I enjoy Mastodon's newer records, but the music they put out during their first decade is definitely my favorite. I wish they'd bring back some of the heavier elements in their songs.
+Vitor Heerdt JB was in diapers when this album dropped, and still sounds like a whiny infant. You look like an undigested peanut plucked from a turd, brought to life and covered with goat pubes.
Funny, I always thought the beauty of music was being able to appreciate different styles and sounds, especially from the same band. It "happened' because they aren't scared to try new things and don't want to make the same album twice.
Funny thing is that from The Hunter they have started to create "more of the same", without trying to add something new to their sound. It's just an easy listening version of the Mastodon we used to know. You can't really compare the variety and the complexity of their first albums to their most recent songs. The main riff from Show Yourself is flat, dumb and simple. The only good thing I've heard recently is the last part of Andromeda. So, yeah, it seems to me that they ARE actually afraid to try new things.
Albums out now, Show Yourself doesn't even feel like it belongs on it. It's like Mastodon covered a QoTSA song and added it randomly to the tracklist. Not saying it's bad, but boy does it not mesh with the rest of the tracks.
Yeah. I've heard the new album and I have to agree. Show Yourself doesn't even seem to played by the same band. Emperor of Sand surprised me, in a good way. I think it's their best album since Crack the Skye. The songs are quite rich and sometimes you can even hear the old sludgy sound. Hinds has done an awesome work on the solos and they have added a lot of sound effects, psychedelic atmospheres, keyboards....
I agree, it's a great album with one average song thrown in.The thing with Mastodon is that they have such a rich and unique song catalogue that an average tune like Show Yourself seems bad, but only in direct comparison to the bands other work. If another band had released Show Yourself it'd likely be praised, but it just falls flat when compared to absolute gems like Word to the Wise and Jaguar God. There seems to be a lot of old school progressive and psychedelic rock influences on the album and Show Yourself just doesn't fit that tone and theme. I'd definitely put the album up there with CTS, it has their strongest closing song since The Last Baron and everything after track 2 flows beautifully.
I feel so bad for you. Seems like you go around in life neglecting some emotions like anger and intensity. If you can't completely understand something you just dismiss it. Have you ever even meditated about what the hell you're doing?

ryanexsus Yessir. They've changed in soo many ways and I appreciate all of it.
Agreed fully.
Imo, it's what makes a great band truly great. Being able to experiment and to do it well.

But i'm not disappointed at all.......
you can make great albums with the same style and still be great tho, like High on Fire did
Battle At Sea is a pure war cry. This EP went straight for the neck, no album has topped in in aggression sense.
