    Bach or Beethoven?

How about Verdi? Or Wagner? There would be no modern film music, game music or metal without Wagner. Or how about Bizet? The entire verismo movement was kickstarted by Carmen.

Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Rossini, Liszt, Wagner, Stravinsky, Bartok, Debussy--they were the biggest revolutionaries.

These are probably the pillars of classical music. Missing are Mendelssohn, von Weber, Handel, Schumann, Verdi, Stravinsky and Ives among others.

@@tbarrelier Yes. "Papa" Haydn as Mozart lovingly referred to him. 😄

@@JJTownley_Classical-Composer I must admit it has taken me a long time to realize Haydn's genius. It started when I bought a box set of his string quartets. These display the great subtlety and ingenuity of his craft. I've felt that his symphonies were somewhat overdone (too bombastic?), but with time I've learned to appreciate them as well. It's funny how most deify Mozart and consider Haydn to be "second string" to Mozart, but that is, IMHO, a mistake. I would, personally, rank Haydn above Mozart as an innovator and put Haydn on equal terms otherwise.

i disagree, liszt's melodies are often times less inspired and he's not anywhere the orchestrator that wagner is. Plus wagner is the much harder worker.

You can keep Schoenberg. He put music on a path that we still suffer from.

    Faltaron Bruckner, Mahler y Wagner.
Son los que transformaron la música de una forma épica. Como si fuera una banda sonora de una película.

Agree!! He is VASTLY under-rated today. His symphonies are monumental, earth-shattering works of Pure Genius - they are unfortunately not as accessible to many, as many other more popular composers, since they are so intense.

Decent choices. I’m glad that you didn’t try to smuggle Elgar, Williams or Britten in…
I would probably have tried to find a slot for a genuine modern composer, such as Stravinsky or Shostakovich.

you need to list what change classical music through its history and not what people are playing because their familiar melodies or what sells tickets at the box offices ,Bach, Mozart ,Beethoven,
Wagner, Chopin, Mahler, Stravinsky, Schoenberg, You may not like their music but they all set the path for very different styles that inspire many composers to have their own uniq styles such as Debussy ,Ravel, Bartok ,Bruckner, Brahmas, Richard Strauss,Tchaikovsky even Olivier Messiaen should be in the top list ,There are so many composers that were inspired by these composers and not Known at all to us now but were doing good at their time and influence these well known composers .Composition is not about a beautiful melody is not a film music at least not in this discussion ,everybody love beautiful melodies but what classical music went through the history and most important elements in process .

I would place Haydn where you have Mozart. Mozart composed many great works but works built on what came before. His fame is in writing works that were simply better and more accomplished than others of his day. If he did anything, it was his advancement of Opera that makes him a real creator of change. Haydn, on the other hand, took the symphony and developed it into what we still reconize as the form today. He was a creative genius and no two works in the genre seem to sound the same. He used unusual instrumentation, pulled and stretched the form for his needs, and worked wonders with a provincial orchestra.
