Oh I like both - the landscape with its lighting at the base and the portrait has a beautiful context that gives you the feel that you are in the gorge.
This is why I want to travel 🧳 so I can see landscape like this, Florida doesn’t have much :):::: to take pictures of . Btw you take the most stunning pictures ever ☺️I had to subscribe, the portrait is beautiful but the landscape tells a story makes you feel like you’re there . I love the landscape one
The shower cap tip was exactly the solution I was looking for. i will be more likely to take my camera out in the rain now. Some very nice exposure blended images. Thanks.
What a fantastic tip about the shower cap, inexpensive and works, why not? Portrait on this occasion for me James👍keep up the fine work and stay safe mate. 😎
It has to be the portrait for me for a few reasons: as Nigel says, portrait follows the lines of the waterfall, so it feels right, 2-the sky at the top left gives a bit more context, and 3- I don't particularly like the blob of foam at the bottom right of the landscape shop. First image is tremendous, you have inspired me to get some rain gear and go explore water falls in the Ottawa, Canada region. Thanks!
It has to be the Portrait as it is following the natural line of the waterfall, James. Landscape for wide things, Portrait for narrow things, as I was taught at Art College. There are exceptions but they are rare! You will know it when you see it!
Portrait for me... lovely journey for the eye from bottom left... thanks James ... great photos. Heading to Skye with D500 and rented Z6ii for nature and wildlife photography... rain opportunities rather likely! Keep up the good work, Bruce
I liked the portrait mode. Out of the 3 photos, I loved the first one the most. 9:27 beautiful and stunning at the same time. Second, in my list is the last photo of the precarious tree.
Welcome back James it’s been a while Some great images there James, they remind me very much of New Zealand’s lush scenery. How true to get out there and embrace the light + conditions = great to fantastic images. Many thanks for sharing your part of the woods this week
Cheers Ian - yeah It's definately been a while. My videos are likely to be less regular going forwards but I'll still be uploading stuff now and again 👍
Great Vlog James, I too have the shower cap accessory which is a must and its the cheapest part from all my gear. The Portrait was the one for me, as the landscape mode bottom right distracted my eye with the white wash and wood debris.
Been on holiday so catching up on your video, superb images as always, I prefer the portrait image of the Waterfall, forgive me but the scene seemed very messy in parts and you did brilliantly to come up with these outstanding images, regards.
I like the shower caps in the rain but often want my lens hood on but can’t with my filters. Kase are introducing a magnetic lens hood, (in the next couple of weeks apparently) made of rubber that works in lots of positions for wide angle and standard lenses. I’m not sure what sizes they are going to introduce but using 82mm magnetic filters and there is a video on UA-cam showing that size. Lovely images by the way.
Great video and photos James. Hmm i can’t decide between the portrait and landscape orientation either. It looked like you were shooting in Jurassic park, what a place! I love those green colours with the slick black and grey rocks with the white water. I think those are my favourite colours in images.
Got to go with the portrait version James. I have a tendency to favor that orientation. Cityscapes are great to shoot in rainy weather also. It’s been raining here the past couple of days so I took the opportunity to go downtown with the new 50mm I just got for blue hour. I just love the reflected light you get from the puddles, wet concrete, etc.
Inspiring video as always, James! I could not agree more with you regarding the beatuty of those green spring colors. Would love to see the last photo of the tree with a bit of mist separating the tree from the slightly busy background .But a very nice shot nonetheless!
Good stuff, James. Love the way you tell us what you’re thinking while you’re shooting the scene. Both the of the second compositions are good, but if I had to choose, I’d go with the portrait version. Apologies for being a bit MIA on your channel recently. With being on the computer all day working from home, I’ve been struggling to spend more time after hours on it watching UA-cam. I’ll be catching up over the next few days though as I have taken some vacation days for the first time this year. Keep up the great work, mate!
Great Video! I've been watching your stuff for an hour with such appreciation. What do you think of the scene that shows up on your moving video at 9:46. I would have voted for you to shoot that angle.Very Nice. Welcome back!!!
Thank you! Yeah that angle could have worked. I've lost count of the times I've shot B-Roll footage that I only see photo potential in once reviewing the footage at home 😂
Love the first image James. With just a touch of editing (dodging, "Orton" effect) you can have a photographic "Constable" there. Portrait view on the second composition. It leads your eye up rather than down, which the first of the two images does, and to me it's the preferred psychology. Don[t let Simon B. know where your old gnarly tree is. He'll invade your space when politics lets him. An enjoyable 20 minutes (I paused 3 times to enjoy your images).
Thanks very much James - looks like the portrait image is winning easily. I must be losing my eye as I was torn between them 😂 It was good to get out shooting again, I'm feeling very rusty! Appreciate your feedback as always
Definitely portrait for me but mainly because it gets rid of that unsightly splodge of foam or whatever it is and the stick! I agree with the pluses of photography in the rain but glasses wearers like me have an extra negative irritation ;-)
Welcome back, James! Landscapers’ “embrace the rain” akin to street photographers’ “respect the puddle”. After your “wave” disaster, I thought you’d be averse to exposing your gear (and self) to H2O. 30 shower caps for gear but not wearing one yourself out there?😀 Clear message about location scouting in detail, and thorough comp explanation👍. Prefer portrait image of second location - landscape orientation has circular foam in shot that reminds me of soap or inorganic goop that shouldn’t be there (polutant). Would have been instructive to see the separate pre-blended images as well as final combined image. Hope all is well. Cheers!
I was absolutely soaked by the end of this shoot. The rain was so much worse than forecast! That little round bit of foam was so annoying, I suspect you are right that it might have something to do with a water pollutant potentially which is a little sad. Seems that even in the most seemingly pristine pockets of nature, they are not so pristine as we think! Thanks for the feedback and suggestions 👌 Cheers Paul
There is too much distraction in the lower right of the landscape shot so I would go the portrait one. I agree with James Oliver I also loved that first shot (9:26). A full edit of that image would make a great video. As always your videos are a great watch.
I like the the first image vertical and the second image horizontal -- though, personally, I'd be tempted to crop off the far right portion to eliminate the round white foam mass. But that's just me. Know of a good light waterproof shell? I could surely stuff one in my pack for such eventualities. And, just curious, I was surprised to see you using a ball head instead of a gear head. I love the Bogen gear head which replaced my ancient and heavy Bogen 3047 three-way head.
Thanks for the feedback. I have a North face waterproof coat which is pretty good, owned that for about 12 years! Can't remember the exact model of coat but I'd say don't scrimp and it will last a long time for you. I still mostly use geared heads but when I need to do lots of walking I'll pack the lighter ball head settup.
We will have 41mm rain and thunderstorm tomorrow evening. What would you recommend me to bring? I'll be soaking wet, I know that 😂🤣 my lens is 24-200mm f4
Great video, James and some lovely images. For my money, of the two shots you took of the second waterfall, I would go with the portrait shot. Both are excellent, mind you, but the portrait just does it for me! 😄
These photographs you made argue well for shooting in the rain. But, you’re a hardier one than me to be out in that yuck. Hope I can work up to your dedication.
My first thought was 'Why is he wearing a down jacket on a wet day?' I do a lot of solo gorge walking. We have a lot of them around here, not just 'The Devil's Pulpit'. You get these places to yourself, no-one has photographed them (unlike The Devil's Pulpit) which also means it can be bloody sketchy at times as well. The one thing I'd disagree with you with is as gorges are deeper than they are wide you need the light to gain contrast. I find that they are better the day after the rain, the waterflow has stabilized so you're not likely to get a sudden surge of water and your gear is not getting soaked through. I'd also say that during a dry patch its worth doing a reccy and removing the worst of the distracting debris, like the long branch that draws your eye away from the waterfall. There's no guarantee however that nature won't have substituted it with something else by the time of the follow up visit though :-)
Haha valid! The weather forecast was only forecasting light drizzle which us on the IOM will often go out in T-shirts in 😂 Rain ended up being much heavier! True about light in gorges - only downside to that is huge dyanmic range which means heavy exposure bracketing. Even on the day I shot the difference between the dark gorge cliff walls and the brightest highlights was absolutey huge. I'm a bit fan of exploring these little hidden areas! Thanks for watching Iain 👍
Both portrait and landscape images are as beautiful as each other. For my eye, the portrait favours. Thanks for sharing buddy.
Oh I like both - the landscape with its lighting at the base and the portrait has a beautiful context that gives you the feel that you are in the gorge.
I’m voting for the landscape format because of the nice foam ball swirling on the water.
I prefer the portrait because it matches the elements geometry in the scene 😁
Good stuff! 👍🥂
Mannn, those photos were so so beautiful! 😮❣️
Thank you James Brew . Your video on rain photography helped me to open a new door in my way of photography.
James, super video. I prefer the portrait shots. Your persistence in awful conditions paid off.
of course portrait. lovely video
thanks James fantastic job
Love this and it has inspired me on this wet rainy day - thank you!
So agree, landscape truly show it's beauty after the rain
Wao!amazing,thanks.
Love your work James!
Awesome tutorial!! Going to work on my Landscape Photography in the rain this week!! Thanks!
Always remember that you may not like an image but someone else will and vice versa.
Absolutely - I quite like the landscape second shot but no one else seems too 😂
The shower cap tip was exactly the solution I was looking for. i will be more likely to take my camera out in the rain now. Some very nice exposure blended images. Thanks.
What a fantastic tip about the shower cap, inexpensive and works, why not? Portrait on this occasion for me James👍keep up the fine work and stay safe mate. 😎
For me, it is the portrait photo. I like the bit of sky, and the side stream that seams to run from it.
Great pictures and a very helpful video once again. I prefer the lanscape shot of the waterfall, without the sky, it's like a fairy dell! Thanks.
Excellent video James ! That gnarley tree shot is amazing !! Thanks for sharing!!
Nice content James...gave you a follow and look forward to what you have to come...
Hi James, it's go to be the portrait, as it excentuates the falls.
Nice bit of post in that first shot.
A great watch as per usual.
Many thanks.
Genuinely inspiring I shall have to learn to ignore the rain
Thank you very much - wear better clothing then me when you go out though lol
So do I, particularly with B&W film.
Portrait looks so much better IMO
Thanks Todd 👍
Awsome...
I love both, but the landscape invites me into the scene more.
Thanks Mary - good to see some votes for the landscape image 👍
Brilliant mate. Stunning images.
Cheers Craig
As always, great video & amazing photography 🍻

Great images...I prefer the portrait shoot, since it has more depth. As always...looking forward to your next video.
another great video ,love photographing in rain also, here in Canada we have a hot spell now but not week the rain comes back
Thanks Joe 👍
Great blog, prefer the portrait orientation, for me has more impact 👍
Awesome photos. Your landscape photo is one that I dream about. I live in farm land and not a lot of inspiring landscape
I've been meaning to go out in the rain...added bonus, it's less busy in these locations too. Great video. Some tips here I'll definitely use
Forgot to say I preferred the portrait photo, but it wasn't easy to decide
I liked the portrait mode. Out of the 3 photos, I loved the first one the most. 9:27 beautiful and stunning at the same time. Second, in my list is the last photo of the precarious tree.
Cracking images James , the weather can add a real interesting element to landscape photography, you proved that, that’s for sure 👏👍😀
Thank you very much 🙂
😳😟😮😯😲 yeah. I'd be out in that like a shot 🤥
Beautiful photos and that particular niche I will leave to experts. Hats off to you James 👏
Thanks very much Adam - "I will leave to experts"...replace the word experts with madmen and you're spot on 😂
Welcome back James it’s been a while
Some great images there James, they remind me very much of New Zealand’s lush scenery.
How true to get out there and embrace the light + conditions = great to fantastic images.
Many thanks for sharing your part of the woods this week

Great vid as usual James, +1 for the vertical shot👍
Thanks Andy! 🙏
Great Vlog James, I too have the shower cap accessory which is a must and its the cheapest part from all my gear. The Portrait was the one for me, as the landscape mode bottom right distracted my eye with the white wash and wood debris.
Thanks for the feedback Martin! All hail the shower caps 😂
Been on holiday so catching up on your video, superb images as always, I prefer the portrait image of the Waterfall, forgive me but the scene seemed very messy in parts and you did brilliantly to come up with these outstanding images, regards.
Landscape image wins for me James, great video! Gotta get myself a nice shower cap;)
I like the shower caps in the rain but often want my lens hood on but can’t with my filters.

I’m not sure what sizes they are going to introduce but using 82mm magnetic filters and there is a video on UA-cam showing that size.
Lovely images by the way.
Oh wow - i'll have to see if they do a version that supports the 95mm filters
A lens hood also helps keep some of the rain/moisture off the front element of the lens, Although not as good as a Showercap.
Great video and photos James. Hmm i can’t decide between the portrait and landscape orientation either. It looked like you were shooting in Jurassic park, what a place! I love those green colours with the slick black and grey rocks with the white water. I think those are my favourite colours in images.
Thanks Richard - yes it definately had a Jurrasic park feel to it 😂
nice video thanks. I like the landscape orientation image. Its more intimate and you cant see where the water comes from, which adds mystery for me
Have you thought about on a rainy day using off camera flash to freeze the rain so you can have a landscape photo with the rain in the photo as well?
I've never tried that but it is a very interesting idea! I might have to give it a go
Got to go with the portrait version James. I have a tendency to favor that orientation. Cityscapes are great to shoot in rainy weather also. Landscape. IT's more intimate with the fall and cliff behind.

Portrait good. Have you tried any of these in B&W - can work better with a more limited pallette?
Thanks! I haven't actually tried these in B&W, I'll take a look
Nice. What is your current gear and lens
Nikon Z7 - 24-70 f4 Z / 14-30 f4 Z / 70-200 f4 F-Mount
@@JamesBrewphoto My dream Gear.. i love Nikon by color and dynamic range..,,,😍

Nikon Z6
We will have 41mm rain and thunderstorm tomorrow evening. What would you recommend me to bring? I'll be soaking wet, I know that 😂🤣 my lens is 24-200mm f4
Like the landscape better
Living in UK, you have to ;-)
Personally I like how the landscape version seems closer to the subject.
Can you wear a shower cap also in these conditions?
Yeah sure - not a good look but it would work 😂
Portrait. I almost always favor a portrait shot.

Landscape. I’m more pulled into the image, like I can feel the spray off the waterfall.
If you love taking pictures in the rain so much, why don't you get a decent rain jacket?:)
Because Im an idiot 😂
Landscape
These photographs you made argue well for shooting in the rain. But, you’re a hardier one than me to be out in that yuck. Hope I can work up to your dedication.
All of the above, plus my camera isn't water proof. Neither am I; A Sekonic 1-degree spot meter would help find your HDR exposures.
Get a poncho. ;)
