- It is inevitable that landscape photographers will encounter bad weather. In this video, I tackle heavy rain head on and get some great results. There is no such thing as bad weather in landscape photography, only bad location choice.

For an inspiring & educational read, it's well worth looking at Elements Photo Magazine. Don't forget to use THOMAS15 for a discount: www.elementsphotomag.com/
It is indeed a great read. I've been a loyal subscriber since the beginning. They have a nice community on facebook worth to join and share images with.
The code also seems to work for the quarterly subscription as I’ve just used it!😮
Reminds me of the saying - "There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing choices."
Totally agree. I've my waterproofs dialled in, just not for the cameras.
Nah there's definitely such thing as bad weather. Just got back from Tenerife and fully intend to hibernate this entire winter away indoors 😂
Lmao that sounds very british
This is a very german saying 😂
It's a saying? I always imagine it as a Jack Wolfskin ad
Fantastic photos in this one, Tom!! Loved the island, but the lone tree in the beginning just topped it for me ;)
The three trees image is excellent, great capture of the rain, very painterly. Just goes to show, there’s no bad time for photography.
I was literally sitting at home looking out the window at the rain when I sat down to watch this. Halfway through I stopped and grabbed the camera and had a fun time shooting while only getting a little wet. Fun times, thanks for the nudge!
Shot in the rain this past weekend. Rain sometimes brings the best conditions and atmosphere but a lot of people avoid it. I rigged an umbrella to clip into my camera bag strap and it kept me dry, my gear safe, and allowed me to use both of my hands freely. A little improvisation and an open mind led to a whole day of foggy moody woodland photography!
Yup, in the rain for wildlife, today.
I've got my camera a sort of rain jacket, providing a whole coverage, view in the viewfinder + screen, and inputs for the hands. It works ok. I didn't think of rigging an umbrella on the camera bag or tripod, I will try this one 😉
@@calieeldalie2547 Yeah it's definitely not perfect but it works lol!
LOVE the first lone tree image. So good.
Great photo of the lighthouse with paddy's milestone in the back 😊
that shot with the 3 trees , wow, the light catching the rain drops and highlighting the tree trunks , thats magic
On rainy days a shower cap or two (disposable or otherwise) is a great accessory to carry around in your pocket, especially if you've got your camera on a tripod and it starts chucking down - just whip out the shower cap and quickly cover the camera. 🙂
Holy shit that lighthouse image is 10/10! It’s just amazing, I can’t describe how it makes me feel but it’s glorious!
That first photo with the tree really sings for me!
Love the tree shot.
Definitely a nasty day with the rain.
You captured some nice image's in the rain and my favourite one was the three trees with the rain coming down.
Absolutely great image of the Lighthouse.
Hope you enjoyed your curry.
Nothing better than a Madras of Vindaloo.
UA-cam says I only can watch three more videos before the player turns off. Your video - totally worth it :)
Actually I like those kind of videos. I tell myself often: there is always a photo. And most of us viewers probably don't go out in perfect weather conditions to beautiful landscapes but have to take, what we can get in our free time. So do us a favor and do more videos in boring landscape with bad weather conditions and - if I am not asking too much: midday.
5:55 👌👌👌 probably the best photo you've ever taken!
As I read a few lines below, I'm sure the umbrella comments go on and on! An umbrella is just one more thing to add to the backpack and if used, is cumbersome. Add some wind and they are impossible/dangerous to use.
You seemed to be successful here wiping the lens with a cloth, based on the image you captured! I have had more luck keeping a handfull of disposable rain ponchos. They are very cheap and transparent. With the poncho over the camera and tripod, I can, frame a shot, wait for a cloud to move, then pushing the lens through a sleeve or a hole in the poncho, focus and shoot. I've even used a plastic sandwich bag just to keep the water off the lens glass. How many dry cloths can you carry!
The pep talk is apprecidated, but rain + wind can still stop me! "...the wind IS difficult to embrace.."
'Faffery'.. what a great word.
Howdy Thomas from Dallas, Texas!!! Your a must watch!!! I remember when I drove around the McDonald’s until no one is inside and I could buy my 3 cheese burgers and run out because I didn’t want to be around people!!! It reminds me of how much you enjoy taking images when no one’s around!!!
I understand the need to be alone as we practice our art. I’m afraid of the person looking over my shoulder and saying that it would be better if I used this lens, or maybe I would be more professional if I used manual. Maybe shoot here or with this aperture!!!!
I find that most of those pundits are not in the trenches!!! Oh by the way, I don’t eat at McDonalds anymore!!
On a rainy day, there’s a special sort of light I notice. The green in the grass almost shines as the UV light still catches it and waterfalls look different.
That last image is stunning. You “need” to offer that on your website. I need that on my house!
Oh boy, that final image of the two islands is surreal! In the best possible way, that is. Wow!
I love the shot @7:00. Thee rain makes the shot of those 3 trees!
Tbh, I love rainy landscape photography. I dunno, the depth from the rain and the low clouds, the atmosphere, I love it!
I like to go out everyday and take pictures of the sunrise. They are always different but weather can be my problem too especially lately since we moved. It has been overcast most mornings. There is usually some color everyday which I do take images of what I can get. I only follow people that talk the art of photography and not gear. Gear it gear and it's what you do with what you have that counts and I've been doing that for 51 years. Really like you video. Photography is art with the eye not the brush.
I love the mood inclement weather brings.
I love the rain pelting down in front of the three trees. I can feel the weather when I see that image. The others are good too :)
5:56 Wauw!
All great images but that last one is perfection. I've added Arran to my list of places to shoot!
Good example there Thomas is there’s no such thing as bad weather, just a bad attitude when it comes to getting out. As you demonstrated with a positive attitude there was still the potential to capture some great images like the first 2 you shared. Lovely image at the end with Pladda Lighthouse and Ailsa Craig in the background which used to where the granite for curling stones was quarried.
5:55 Absolutely Stunning Tom
Great Video Thomas, shame about the weather, 5:56 stunning, the weather has created a vignette around the tree, 6:59 the rain has created an interesting effect against the trees, Beautiful light, this is easily the best image of the video, thanks for sharing
18:49 , the island look like floating in the air. very nice shot !
I am not a fan of photographing in wet weather. I just hate feeling wet and grey does nothing for my psychology. However it is still an opportunity to capture unique images of the world in which we live. Videos like this remind me of that.
Great pictures.
Some heavy rain hacks fro a sports photographer (scotland approved)
>Use the lens hood to shed of some of the rain
>Use a trash bag to wrap the camera in if you don't have proper rain covers
>carry a small roll of electrical tape to hold the cover in place
The rain in the three trees photo looks great
That image @ 5.50mins. Wow!
one more vote for "Elements", a superb magazine for landscape shooters ... if you are a Medium Format shooter, the sister magazin "MediumFormat" is a good read too ... (not related to those magazines in any way, but a enthusiast reader) ... thanks for the video, I travel in a "small" camper, a Winebago MiniWinnie ...
Great stuff as always. The island in the bg is Ailsa Craig that's where the curling stones come from.
Love the sound of rain pelting down on your van!
Ever heard of an umbrella - a remarkable product made especially for keeping rain away from the camera :)
Loved the image of the lighthouse and am pretty sure will be featured in 2025 calendar.
The two images you took in the rain are incredible, so atmospheric - Thank you for another great video.
I'm not really know what's worse. Exposing the camera gear for that heavy rain, or coming in to that small space totally wet! :D
Love the massive drops in the trio tree-photo!
You’ve inspired me to get out and start photography again
Puppy pads for the dripping....😊
YEP! bad weather can make you be more creative or NOT! LOL! Love the last image TH. see you next week :)
Enjoyable. The chat the cameras the drive the food. Pure entertainment.
Today was the first of a multi-day visit to the Oregon Coast with rain, wind and fog promising to prevail throughout. Between video and comments, a few practical tips offered, but the main lesson is quit holding back, fretting and making excuses, just dive in. The test will come tomorrow morning.
This morning I headed for the beach during a lull that was promptly followed by the sucker punch, returning gale force wind driving horizontal rain in sheets. I took shelter in the lee of a towering rock pinnacle. I then worked my way downwind from sheltering rock to sheltering rock, failing to find a composition to motivate opening the pack. By the time I beat my way windward, back to the beach access stairway, I was soaked despite head to toe Gortex, and ready to admit defeat. “…just dive in.”
Excellent video Thomas and beautiful images too.
From a Bristolian living down-under. 👍
Can't fault your enthusasim. ❤
Love the lighthouse image, bang on.
Long exposures dont really do it for me anymore, but that lighthouse shot is one of my favorite in a while Thomas. bravo. Also your Nikons look more comfortable in the rai. than my wanky sonys
Yes embrace lovely auk weather. PS thats a fraudulent slip I am from Uk living in Australia AUK LOL. Love the channel. Human and shows what most of us men go through at times. In a somber thought 75% of suicides are Men. We need better support and empathy as we carry so Much responsibility.
Speechless at the last image
I have to say Thomas, your photos from this trip are my favorite that I've seen in some time. Good work, it seems like you've hit a new stride.
That final image - “it doesn’t look real.” Wow!! Absolutely stunning photograph. 👏🤩
Great Video. I shoot a lot in the Costa Rica rainforests. Several years ago I got tip from my guide. Buy disposable shower caps. Pop them on the front of your lens. They cost about .06 cents each. Love your chanel!
A perfect day for a hot, black, dark roast coffee and a roast beef sandwich with a few beans. You nailed that first tree shot, Thomas. Cleaning out the van when you get home and getting everything dry is going to be a job. Been on a bunch of trips like that and I have to say that a rainy day like that is better than slushy snow falling on the equipment and contributing nothing to the composition,
The first tree shot was a throwaway not worth printing, composition way too loose.
@@johnsmith1474 : opinions are like belly buttons, everyone has one and every one of them is unique.
Lens hood keeps the water out of the lens pretty well. I’ve never protected my Nikon bodies from rain or snow and never had any issues
Perfectly timed considering the storm. Up here in the Lakes this mornings low cloud after the rain was spectacular… walking the dog, forgot my camera… doh! Loved the first shot of the lone tree
The first picture must be one of my all-time favorits- absolutely stunning!
Loved it bud! That island shot was stunning! Great find
You mentioned printing. Keith Cooper has a photography channel with a large number of videos on the subject of making fine prints.
Hi Thomas, the first image ist absolutely fantastic 😮
It was definitely worth getting soaked as the first two images are excellent, I especially like the one with the lone tree....and of course the view looking down on the light house with the Ailsa Craig sitting mystical in the background...many thanks
I think your channel is like a ministry. In a world of such craziness and evil, it is literally therapeutic to watch a wholesome episode of Tomas Heaton with awesome nature images. Thanks!
thanks for sharing your adventures on the road once again! That photo of the 3 trees in the rain! EXCELLENT! Have a good one, fancy your Indians ;-)
The QR code is a really cool & unique marketing feature of your calendar Thomas. The rain sure was coming down on you, I trust your camera gear was all okay. Great atmospheric images you captured in those conditions. Enjoyed watching this video. Thank you.
That shot of the trees on the hill in the rain is amazing!
Love the final image Thomas 👍
Sorry I rambled on about the Nikon D850 before and forgot to say the image with the 3 trees was fantastic. Thanks again Tom.
The lighthouse image is incredible 👌
Magnifique photo de l'ile avec le phare ! Bravo👋👋👋
Wonderful Lighthouse Shot!
Great footage..a quick tip, when I'm out and about in bad whether I completely line the floor of my van with old news papers that I get free from coffee shops etc end of the day put in the bag and toss.
Love that last image!
Great video. I was recently on Harris when Storm Babet was hitting the east coast, Rain I can deal with but I really, really struggle when its blowing a hoolie.
I love that final lighthouse image, Tom! Cheers!
My gear is Sony and weather sealed as well but man I would never have the guts to take it out in rain like that. My hat is off to you for those great images. Great video as always.
Love the lighthouse image the central composition and use of negative space makes me think of Wes Anderson films 😃
I'll buy that lighthouse photo. That photo got me on my migrant hart because it shape its exactly like my home country.
The best photography in years. Love the subject and mood.
I admired your perseverance that resulted in the three tress in the rain; a beautiful image. Hope you enjoyed the Madras?
Glad to end work and come home to a new video
Hope you enjoy it!
First of all, I signed up for Elements magazine and thank you for it. Second, since even looking at food makes me gain weight and you are so skinny, my Enquiring Mind was wondering what was in that bag at the end! And thirdly, I hope you will publish your calendar photographs in a book.
Fourthly (but who's counting...) I have a rather serious question that may betray my age: Can you point me to a serioud discussion of what has happened to lenses and lens design? It used to be that a 24 mm lens (attached to a 35mm camera) was considered a pretty wide angle lens that easily showed distortion; a 16 mm lens was considered a fisheye; but now, it seems Landscape photographers such as yourself use these lenses almost like a "distortion free" normal lens, so it appears that between the old days (of a mere 35-40 years ago) and now lens design itself has changed in a revolutionary way. I know that the difference between 35mm and medium format (such as a Hasselblad) has a "translation" effect, which may be happening here, but I still am left with the feeling that - even besides the ubiquitous zoom lenses - something fundamental has changed in lens design. Am I showing my age in a cranky way? Or is there really something different going on? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated, and calming... so Thanks in advance!
wow.. the best images I've seen lately on this channel.. My style of landscape photography. Good job :)
Beautiful pictures, the only time I use my lens hood, when it is raining... Sunlight I block it with my hand, learned that from one of your videos but rain, lens hood makes a difference
There are camera rain covers out there to buy, but if anyone wants to make their own, clear shower curtain liners are a great cheap material.
Just pattern it up however you want it for your camera and lenses and grorilla tape it together.
I really love your photograph of the three trees in the rain. Wonderful!
You seem to be more energized and/or passionate in this video than you have in past weeks..good video!!
Watching your videos always makes me miss home! Great video Thomas
Beautiful picture thank you for your hard work .I love the rain sometimes
Amazing images. The second one resembled an impressionist painting. The lighthouse at the end was a great bonus. I'm a real sucker for lighthouses, waterfalls, and snow capped mountains, though I can withstand a beach sunset image.
Superb images, too hard to chose which is my favorite.
Really enjoyed the video again. Loved the photos of the three trees and Plada with Alisa Craig in the background. Have stayed at Middleton’s Campsite and enjoyed a curry or two from the Indian round the corner.
Images in rain are my favorite. Loving it. Thank you Thomas.
Your dedication in such horrible weather, is why you end up with absolutely stunning images.
one of your best video in long time...beautiful photos
