John is an all American man!!! Great skill, kind heart, extreme talent and skill and he has been passing this on to a couple great young men. The Hampton brothers.... Honored to know this guys!. Even more blessed to have one of their guitars. It just a MONSTER....perfect!.
I came by to see you many years ago, and you were out of town. So I went to see Fabs Corte in Asheville. Those days were wood buying days. What's the deal with Canadian (New Brunswick) red spruce? Does Southern red spruce have stronger late wood? And any reliable way to be sure you have red vs white?
That's so the grain is dead on, no "run out" if the log is slightly twisted. Also, the pieces can be carried out of the forest. Actually the bandsaw would create more waste, because of the kerf.

why not use a band saw and avoid the waste? I know hand splitting is old school, but I have to ask. Thank you

Using the handle as a lever!! NO! NO! NO!
Michael Kearney yeah especially with the blade facing towards you lol
Splitting on the grain instead of cutting across and making the wood unsound
awsome.
