I read this book over the Summer, and I have to say it is with out a doubt. One of the best modern science fiction books I've read. Author Cixin Liu, does a fantastic job. Of telling a mind bending hard science fiction yarn.

Alien encounters have been written by great scifi authors in the past maybe 80 or 90 years. Many may think it's a cliche, that there is no something new come out. But this book is one of a kind. It writes a lot about history, philosophy, politics and nature around the theme. The content is so huge that when it needs to be summarized, readers may only think of alien encounters. But when you read this book, you will feel like you're reading the remembrance of the earth's past, a truly breathtaking adventure.

The proton folding into two dimension and eventually being wrapped around Trisolaris was difficult to grasp, as were a boat load of other topics in the book but this was by far my favorite read of the year and that’s thanks to you. I would’ve never known this series existed had you not posted this video.

This is a great explanation of this book. I was struggling with it at first and where it was going. You helped me grasp it a little more. Thank you.

Nice thorough review, thank you! (SPOILERS FOLLOW): When i finished this book, I was amazed at how well the author planned things out. He basically spent, what, a third or quarter of the book exploring Ye's past and state of mind. It all paid off when you realized that she, alone, in a desolate military base where she'd been practically imprisoned for years, received that first message. When the moment came to be silent or send a second message (allowing the Trisolarians to locate Earth), she did not hesitate. I appreciate that effort. I want to know what would drive a single human being to doom the entire species, HER species, to damnation. (although I know she was Redemptionist in the end, still).
I must also, as I have said elsewhere, agree... Da Shi was a bada**. I loved him and his chain smoking. Demon or not, he was what humans needed at the time.
    Thanks again, sir!

I heard about this book not too long ago. I think I first heard about it when it was revealed that David & Dan (Game of Thrones Showrunners) were supposed to adapt the book for Netflix, but I didn't pay much attention to it. Then I saw the video where's Quinn's Ideas talks about it, which hooked me into it. And now, your review is further fortifying my interest, so I should definitely check this out!

Oh yeah it a great book. It looks like Quinn has some interesting videos on it. Which I'm going to watch when I've read the two sequels.

I also heard about it from Quinn's Ideas. It's a really good book too. I'm all the way to third book. I'm not much of a reader but I've caught myself reading hundreds of pages a day whenever I have a chance to read. I had trouble putting it down. I just needed to know what happened next.

@@filmandpage1138 The sequel is really good. I prefer the first but I still really liked the sequel (though I see a lot of people who prefer the sequel so I might be in the minority). My only real complaint with it was that it took a little while to get started but after about 100 pages, the story really picks up and never really falls into another lull.
I look forward to seeing your opinions on the future books.

@540マンモス There is, sort of...but the fourth book isn't written by Cixin Liu, so it's not necessarily "canon". It's called "The Redemption of Time", and it's written by an author who goes by the name Baoshu. Originally it was just written as fan-fiction, but it was so well-written that it attracted a lot of attention, until a publishing company approached him with an offer to publish it. What really blows my mind is that Cixin Liu was nice enough to give permission for the book to be published. A lot of authors would have said no, I think. I listened to the audiobook version of it and thought it was amazingly well-written for what was essentially "fan-fiction".
If anyone hasn't read it, trust me when I say that it doesn't feel like fan-fiction. It definitely is professionally written (otherwise no one would have published it) and it fills in some interesting gaps in the story, revisiting earlier characters. It ties a lot of things up in unexpected ways. Well worth your attention if, after finishing the trilogy, you feel disappointed that it's over and wish you could read another book in that universe. 😁

I think the "Pinyin" pronunciation is more like "tse-shin liu" but your guess as to how the tone works with each syllable is as good as mine...
Thanks for the review: sounds like something I should pick up!

It's a fantastic book. I didn't cover this in my review, but the Cultural revolution in China is something I'm not familiar with at all. So without any context I found situation at the beginning of the book hard to grasp.
