      I agree, I'm totally fine with the fact that Pierce Brosnan isn't a very good singer, so long as he's on key, 'cause if anything it makes you feel less intimidated to sing along too if you're not a great singer either.

    Another random thought: I LOVE the whole part where Sophie hangs with her three dads on the boat. I genuinely can't think of other movies where a woman gets to wear a bathing suit, and not only is she NOT sexualised in any way, but she gets to just chill out with three grown men without any mention of her looks/body (either by voice or by camera direction/editing), and also it just feels safe and nice. She's not sexualised, but also not infantilised- like you'll often find in movies if a younger woman isn't fully dressed in front of a father figure it's either made out to be awkward for him (for some wild reason), or she has to be infantilised to remind the audience shes daddys wittle giwl. Just super super nice to see her able to have her legs and arms on display and just. that's not even mentioned. It makes me extra aware of how fucking weird Hollywood is about women's bodies.

  • @Flareontoast
    @Flareontoast Рік тому +525

    I think something that's also super charming about that movie is that everyone gets to be vulnerable, like the dads deciding they want to get to know Sophie, want to walk her down the aisle, actually talk to one another, the women all supporting each other and helping them to process and express their emotions. There's just so much fun and honesty and personality in this movie and I love it.

    I don't remember where I saw this, but the greek people in the movie are meant to represent a greek chorus, and an extension of the gods. If you pay attention to them, they know what's going on, they poke fun at the characters in an omniscient way. Only Donna seems to be peripherally aware of their influence. Definitely could have had more greek spoken and Greek characters, but the movie is more a stage production than realistic depiction.

    My dad loved to tell the funny story when this movie came out that the finale dance sequence was filmed next door to sky fall and pierce brosnan was embarrassed about this and being seen in the costume and singing and dancing because he thought it reflected a downfall with his career in comparison to his old role as hypermasculine james bond so it’s ironic that this movie sorta reignited his career in the public interest and this also speaks to the attitudes towards blockbusters at the time from even the cast as well as the audience

I love this movie, I understand it's made from the "foreigner's POV" but I think that if we start taking notice and changing all the things that have been co-opted without the locals' input, it would be great. Greece is not however a foreigner who just loves mythology or stories about Ancient Greece or even a tourist pictures it, it's not Zorbas (in 2022) and the Greek language exists, it's spoken everyday. My relationship with my mom was very rocky growing up. But if there was one thing we always had together was sitting together with my sisters and watching movies like mama mia and mean girls, chick flicks, and movies/tv shows. These movies she showed us have shaped who I am today. These movies are so important no matter how “vapid” they may seem to male critics. • @walpurgisnight7
    @walpurgisnight7 Рік тому +177

    My mother and I have owned 3 of the DVD's, and my grandmother has her own. This and Jennifer's Body are two of the most pivotal films in modern feminism. It showed young girls how dogmatic the ideals of masculinity being superior were, and are, entirely toxic and make them feel horrible about themselves. And then these two films gave us all the opportunity to look back with hindsight and explore how we have grown and can continue to push for a more free femininity- not an exclusive adjective for high-fem presenting women within a specific body type and sex appeal, but one that welcomes emotional maturity and a desire to cultivate growth in everything around us. There is no comfort in exclusivity, it breeds anxiety and unsuredness in one's own position in society while inviting everyone to explore femininity creates space for us all to support eachother.
    Okay, I'll hop off my soap box now.

      Id also say teeth is a powerful film with jennifers body. I feel like alot of people never watched and it never really gained traction, but i found it better for the female image and power than jennifers body.
      It focuses on the predatory nature men have on young women. In the end theres alot of ways to interpet how the movie wraps up, but i found the main characters choice to maintain her power as she does as a way to cope with all the sexual assault she experienced. Crazy movie.
      Even though megan fox was so hot, and the gay kiss between her and dakota fanning still haunts my dreams. Uhhg to be a baby gay again.

    I remember seeing mama mia in theater with my mom when I was 10, and just thinking about how much Donna and her friends reminded me of how my mom and my aunts act when they would have their twice a year get together. It was an immediate warm nostalgia fest for me even at the first watch when I was so young. Even watching these few clips from the film with Donna's gang makes me miss those summers of sitting in the backyard while my aunts and mom were laughing away, losing their shit just from sitting in the sun, chatting, and drinking coronas together

  • @Bluey306
    @Bluey306 Рік тому +55

    my mom adores the movie and her adoration for it sort of influenced mine. she loves it for all the obvious reasons, but her favourite thing is how Donna reunites with Rosie and Tanya, the way the three woman scream and holler and run towards each other, shoving each other around, bantering, and imperfectly performing their little Dynamos handshake. my mom says it makes her think of her own friends and how they interact (which i have witnessed firsthand) - women well into their forties and fifties wearied by world and age, but still possessing infinite zest and excitement to see each other and unabashedly screaming about it. if it weren't for the fact that i already love mamma mia on my own, my mom's reasons for loving it is enough reason for it to have a special place in my heart.
    she also has many good words for Pierce Brosnan's performance. she knows it's not _good_ singing, but she finds it heartfelt and _full._ like the singing may not be good but the acting is still excellent. i also grew to unironically enjoy his singing - sometimes when i'm in the mood to feel things i would listen to the movie version of SOS, because _it makes me feel things._
    (my mom likes to compare Brosnan's singing to poor Russell Crowe's performance of "Stars" in the Les Miserables movie - how Crowe's singing was good but was absolutely wooden in that solo.)

    It's the ultimate feel-good movie for me. I remember when I saw this movie at the cinema when it came out. It had already been out for two weeks in my small Norwegian hometown, but still there was a really long line going all the way outside of the cinema of people waiting to watch it. During the movie, the crowd was singing along, laughing, and clapping anytime something funny happened, it was a great experience, and not really something I've ever experienced in my small hometown before, but everyone is so familiar with Abba and knows all the songs, at least that's how it is here in Norway, so it's something pretty much anyone can sing along to. It was mostly women, but the few husbands and boyfriends who had been dragged along were all smiling from ear to ear by the end of it too. My old dad who watches pretty much nothing but science fiction and action movies really enjoyed the movie too.

    I worked at a cinema when this came out, had been working there about 5 years and I couldn't remember a time before or after where movie goers were so damn buzzed and joyful to see a movie. Also one of the only movies I'd EVER seen the audience cheering and dancing and singing during the movie (I live in the UK, interactive audiences during films doesn't exist like it do in America). It also stayed around FOREVER on the big screen and still sold out constantly months after release, which was extremely rare. I legit just assume people were watching it multiple times every week. I was so damn hype when they released the sing along version at our cinema (same film, just had karaoke subtitles during the song). I always used to make sure I was there at the end of the screenings so during the credit dance numbers I could charge to the front of the theatre and start dancing. People would always come down and join in haha. Constant dance parties at work; won't see that with the 500th marvel movie :P
    On a more personal note, I didn't have much opinion on it before release, but went to see it with my gran and basically just cried (happily) through the majority of it. Donna reminds me of my own mother so so much, and I also didn't know my father, AND my mum used to take me to Greece almost yearly on holiday as a kid, so this movie hit super close to home from the get go. Add on top of all that, the fact the movie showed such good representations of friendships, relationships, and family life just made it heartwarming as heck. Honestly one of my fave movies of all time. It's just FUN.
    Ps. great video, love seeing this film getting the love it deserves.

    Fantastic video!! I love Mamma Mia and I was baffled that in 2008, it managed to present a movie where women were sexy but not objectified, masculinity was teased and deconstructed, older women were desirable and had desires, and any form of the usual film conventions were tossed out the window for the sake of fun.
    I'd be curious to hear yours (or anybody else's) thoughts on the sequel and what shifts could be noted as a result of having a man in the director's chair/in several other leading roles. In my opinion it manages to maintain the spirit of the original pretty firmly but I haven't watched it in a sec. I could definitely think of a few pieces that could be scrutinized through a feminist lens though.

    mamma mia is so personal to me. donna is literally my mom to the T, i grew up without my birth father, and my mom has always struggled with me growing up and going off on my own. slipping through my fingers is actually going to be my mother daughter dance song at my wedding someday

    I built a shelf for my movies a couple weeks ago and wanted to watch something while I did it. I put Mamma Mia in the player and sung along the entire time I worked on the shelf. 10/10 experience. It's been one of my favorite movies for as long as I can remember.
    My mom and I both own it, and I think my brother does too :)

    I think part of the reason that it doesn’t show more of Greece is because it was filmed in Croatia! It’s a spot that quite a few films have been shot at, mostly because it’s inexpensive. As much as I love the movie, it’s sad that the accurate representation of Greece, (both the culture and the people), was overlooked.

      It was filmed in Greece, actually, on the island of Skopelos. You're probably thinking of the sequel, which was indeed filmed in Croatia.

    Mamma Mia was released a year after I was born. I went through two DVDs because I scratched the first one so much from watching it constantly, Mamma Mia made me realize the joys of celebrating womanhood but also how women in film are neglected for the reasons you gave.
    I still watch it to this day and live by the soundtrack and love the campiness of the first film and it’s 2000s tones.
    (Unpopular opinion, I love Sam’s singing in SOS. He may not sound like a classic singer but he’s not bad and I actually enjoy his singing).

    I practically grew up watching mama mia. Since i was a little kid it was the one movie i remember the most from childhood. It has become more relatable and bittersweet over the years but im glad it grew up with me. It always knew how to pick me up when i felt sad or lonely. It was the movie that manages to make my day 100%. Everything about it feels so fun and exciting to watch no matter how many times (this is coming from a mostly animated media watcher). I love all the tracks and will ALWAYS ball my eyes out to slipping through my fingers

    i went to see mamma mia with my parents to a fancy cinema festival in a park my city held when i was like, eight. convinced it changed the way my brain was wired forever, along with my parent's;
    we owned the cd soundtrack and we put it on every roadtrip until it got messed up from use a few years ago, and then we added the whole thing to the family's roadtrip playlist on spotify. screaming the last chorus of the winner takes it all at high velocity down a highway is a tradition for us, i still cry with my mom to slipping through my fingers. we mostly don't speak english, yet we have the whole thing memorized!
    we watch the movie every couple of years and think to ourselves that its truly one of the best movies ever made, it's one of my most fond memories of my life and im so thankful for it

    I remember when I was a kid, that I found the performance of „Lay All Your Love On Me“ so exciting - it was the first depiction of sexual desire in film I saw. And I think it already kind of shaped my wishes, which was heavily needed. I‘m glad I saw the duet scene before experiencing the ABBA song, because the associations are totally different.

    Not Greece, but in Portugal, in small towns, you will definitely see older people dressed like those locals. Especially 15 years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if that was just their regular clothes they always wear.
    The skirts and smocks and head coverings are just what people used to wear, and what they continue to wear

    A few months back I had the absolute privilege of being present when my mum's boyfriend watched Mamma Mia for the first time. We were on a cabin trip and decided to watch a movie and whilst scrolling through netflix my sister, my mum and I all instantly agreed we needed to watch Mamma Mia, at which point my mother's boyfriend confessed to not having seen it.
    Now my family is a mamma mia household, ofc we owned the dvd, I saw it live for the first time when I was 8, and the second time when I was 15 with my then 9 year old sister and our mum- the men in our family: my brother and father, have the utmost respect for Mamma Mia and will watch it whenever it is on (I once walked in on my dad watching it on his own after the divorce).
    So we couldn't believe my mum's boyfriend had never watched it. He has 4 20-something daughters, but he has just never gotten around to it he said. But he was very happy to watch it with us and we did. What followed was one of the funniest nights ever as us girls sang every song with passion whilst he tried his best to keep up and sing along. He loved it!
