What's super jarring is celebrities in the 70's-90's were very vocal about what is happening in the world that is very wrong and they stood up for what was right, and yet celebrities now are super silent, I pray for the downfall of celebrity worship

All of them? Or were those just few examples that simply stuck in history books, and they stuck coz it was unusual and there were attempts to shut them up? And those people were usually ridiculed in their time, and only now we see them as standing up for the right thing? It's easy to glorify history

The thing that strikes me about Jonathan Glazer's speech is how much his hands are shaking as he's speaking. He's clearly trembling as he speaks, he's powering through it to articulate himself well, but he's clearly very scared.

@porter9494 There is a-lot of humankind ways of responding to such situation.
One of which giving the safety of the hostages (at least the civilians) and try to negotiate rather than bombing Hospitals for example.
And the other is fight only those who attacked you, have weapons and such rather than bombing kids and women to show the strength that you lack.
But I guess we will not even agree of what truly happened in October 7th in the first place as I see. it. there is many people who believed that Hamas have beheaded 40 imaginary babies and had the time to rape the people who are supposed to be protected by the strongest army in the world before torturing them to death and some don’t think of the possibility of civilian being killed by a certain army cause they chose to use a tactic called Hanibal.

Mr Glazer and his team are wonderful, brave people who deserve better always. If I had known about that specific event. I would have shown up. A complete nobody, applauded as cheerfully and loudly as possible along with a few friends inspiring the rest of the stone-cold-hearted artists to give them a true standing ovation right then and there. We have seen other amazing films depicting real-life events that go through the heart and makes you want to be part of the change. It's crazy to me how nobody even had the heart to stand up and applaud him. As a "Thank you for being up there and making us aware. After this event I'm gonna go home and sell these expensive clothes and donate the whole check to the Palestinian movement".

honestly as someone who lives in a third world country and even though my family is doing kind of okay (my parent's job lets them afford our education, food, medical treatments and sometimes a bit more), we constantly find ourselves doing the maths to see "so, can we afford this really?" for very little things, like, let's say nail polish, or olive oil. it takes some effort to actually spend money on things that are not a necessity. I can't donate directly to any cause, but ive been very advocate with helping boosting videos, watching ads, sharing, whatever i can do to help, and i still feel bad for not being able to donate.
so to see people so, so, so wealthy, and people i admire, not say a single thing to help people who are dying really makes me disappointed, to say the least.
the fact that they are too scared to speak and help makes me furious, because im trying to work hard so i can hopefully donate even 5$ and they're sitting in their thousands of dollars worth pf property, wearing clothes worth the safety of a family, and even beyond that, having the influence and the platform to actually reach those families' gofundme goals without donating a penny of their own is disgusting.

I have been in customer service and quality support for years. I've worked with non-profit organizations, too. It does feel off-putting. I have heard some customers complain about the lack of quality check-ups, customer servicing and understanding of maths; after they came to us months ago asking how to lease an iPhone, an iPad or even a computer. Then, as they wear their designer clothes, jewellery, and their child is holding onto a brand-new iPad and Apple headphones. They stand in our store saying "Nobody told me about the taxes, or about the interests that come with leasing and this... and this..." As you walk them outside they have the year's most recent car.
They know about the taxation and the interests that come with leasing and buying and crediting to buy a house, a car and other items. They just wish to complain so that we the rest who are barely making it, have to return the "used item" back to the manufacturer and they get their money back. And they return in two weeks to lease another expensive item.

my problem with social media is how much people are focusing on celebrities during a g*nocide instead of putting pressure on their local politicians. celebrities do have reach, but they shouldn't be the main topic of conversation, which is something im seeing too much of online. of course they're scrambling to post about it, genuine or not, people are putting pressure on them to do so even though the same people are now saying its performative after the influencers give in and post like the public has been asking. it makes no sense to me to pressure someone to make an instagram statement and then be upset about it. you know what's dystopian to me? focusing more on celebrities who are or aren't making statements about a g*nocide rather than actually trying to engage in any activism off social media themselves. not to say there aren't hundreds of thousands of people doing everything they can to help Palestine or bring awareness to major media, but a lot of people's activism starts and ends online. I mean this very respectfully I don't know if this comment is coming off very rude, its just frustrating and upsetting to see where people are putting their energy. you can't expect celebrities to be empathetic to the average person, they haven't lived like the average Joe in years, and im not saying that's a good thing. id rather see this energy go somewhere that matters, a celebrities instagram post means absolutely nothing to me. also the block out is semi ridiculous. ive seen way too many people saying in comments "block Taylor for the block out but you can still stream her music" this goes without saying but if you're blocking a celebrity on instagram but still supporting their movies, music, and whatever else- then you're not actually impacting them and their finances. especially since some people blocking celebs weren't following them to begin with... that does nothing for their numbers.

oh for sure, completely agree. I think my focus is on seeing how little celebrities care about something like genocide is changing how we view them. they don’t have political power but they do have money- I think with so many people rallying around a single cause like Palestine, donating what they can, seeing the abhorrent wealth at the Met Gala also sours the notion of celebrity. I should have made it clearer in the vid but I’m not necessarily saying “celebs should be better” but rather highlighting the shift in our cultural perception of celebrity if that makes sense?

You made a lot of great points in this video. I agree that the Met Gala is a symbol of opulence in a time of financial and social strife. Celebrities who have the privilege of a public platform should be demonstrating that they're against this genocide. However, Camila Cabello's purse isn't worth $24k. The one of the creators of the bag came out and said the rose was originally $39, but was given for free. It was spray painted gold and the diamonds in bag are just air bubbles. The water in the bag was tap water. It apparently didn't cost more than $5 to make. There's probably a designer fee since the original designer Jade Wade helped produce this bag, but the cost is no where near $22k. This information was apparently made up by someone on Twitter and news articles just ran with it. Camila Cabello also confirmed it wasn't $22k on TikTok. Sorry. I went on a deep dive on this the other day. I thought the price sounded ridiculous and wanted to know the breakdown.

here are more things to add to the eurovision section
    • in the grand final iolanda (representing portugal) had palestinian symbols on her nails which led to the youtube upload of her performance being delayed. the ebu attributed this to "technical difficulties". whenever portugal recieved 12 points for the juries iolanda would also show her nails proudly
    • in the family show of the grand final slimane (representing france) made a speech calling for a peace in the usual a capella part of the song where he is supposed to be singing
    • in the second semi mustii (representing belgium) had a tattoo that said "peace" which was hidden when he removed his jacket in the outro of his song
    • in the first semi one of the dancers in australia's performance had pro-palestinian symbols in their body paint, but their performance was not delayed unlike portugal's, nor were they asked to change it like ireland's
    • apparently six countries threatened to pull out before the final (not confirmed) these countries were greece, ireland, norway, portugal, switzerland, and the united kingdom
    • the greek delegation had allegedely been getting harassed by the israeli delegation and during a press conference marina was pretending to sleep when israel was called
(• also in a press conference when eden was asked if her presence was endangering the contest and refused to respond joost asked "why not?")
    • the irish, norwegian, and portuguese delegations among others were also calling on the ebu to investigate the incidents surrounding them and the israeli delegation
(• switzerland won this year so imagining the swiss delegation pulling out would dramatically change the result)
    • olly alexander (representing the uk) was also pressured to withdraw by other uk artists boycotting eurovision. he ended up making a ceasefire statement with several other artists a few months before eurovision
    • apparently the spanish delegation called for freedom of press after israeli media attacked a spanish reporter for being pro-palestine
israel has been using eurovision as a soft power for years but i do feel like after the shitshow this year they're probably going to withdraw. or at least countries might actually withdraw instead of threatening to do so. this is not uncommon with azerbaijan also exploiting eurovision while killing armenians, and while that should be paid attention to, i think people care more about israel and palestine because of more politicians and celebrities being outspoken about it, and people's taxes being used to fund support for israel. in a sense, it does affect them more since it is a part of the foreign policy in the country they live in and they want to know where their money goes into supporting. but i do think the other conflicts going on in sudan, myanmar, armenia, etc. also deserve an outspoken platform like palestine.
one other fun fact: iceland got last place in the entire contest but if they sent bashar murad who was second place in söngvakeppnin they could have done better. however i don't think it would have ended well since bashar is palestinian. granted israel and iceland were in different semis but if bashar qualified i don't want to imagine the harassment he possibly would have recieved from the israeli delegation.
bashar was also the artist who collaborated with hatari, the icelandic act that showed palestinian flags in 2019, right after the grand final

That was what I heard was the real reason why Joost got kicked out; because of his comments about Eden Golan being told, on camera, that she didn't have to answer the journalist's question about the unrest her/Israel's presence was causing at the event (basically saying, if she's so proud to represent Israel, then she should be able to speak to it, rather than her non-answer about how they were all there for the love of music and the arts and she was getting along great with all the other performers).

    • @yeehawtexasfanpage
      @yeehawtexasfanpage 7 місяців тому +15

Let me try to correct some points, as this is not entirely accurate & a bit misleading😅
      - Iolanda had her Palestinian inspired nails on, I believe, the turquoise carpet (look at the photos from the event) almost a week prior to the event. Why they only took issue with the nails afterwards, I don't understand, as in her performance recap they used the non-Keffiyeh nails
      - Slimane did do that, however I believe he also received permission to do it as the daily acapella was straining his voice and he wanted to preserve it. from what I understand, it was ok'ed by the producers beforehand.
      - Australia (my country)'s performance was probably overlooked because the watermelon was kinda unintelligible. No one picked up on it BEING a pro-Palestine symbol until he posted about it later, so how could they have dissuaded it? Bambi's ogham & Iolanda's nails on the other hand (amidst the EBU's discrepancy re. her nails) were all picked up on in advance/ whilst on stage.
      - A lot of those countries (definitely Portugal & Switzerland) have since said they had no plans of doing that. A lot of it however, could come from the fact that they were being actively harassed back stage, Israel's participation and then Joost's DQ. Were it Israel's participation alone, I don't know that they'd have competed given the strict monetary penalties they would've faced had they pulled out.
      - Israel/ KAN also confirmed their intentions to attend ESC 2025, so no I don;t see them withdrawing. Being able to push their propaganda on the international stage is likely a huge advantage for them, especially when they obliterated this years televote with the support they received. Not to mention, being able to victimise themselves and claim 'antisemitism' for being held accountable to their actions, is too easy an excuse if they are rejected/DQ'ed (look at how Russia did similarly), I don't see them bowing out on their own.
following the SF and Eden's Qualification, KAN was proud of their having qualified 'amid antisemitism' and said that irrespective of politicised votes (of which you could argue they benefited most from), to have qualified amidst the rising antisemitism was an achievement.
ALSO side point, I don't know if this is just me, but it looked like one of the Israeli delegation quickly held a 'free there hostages' pin to his chest when Israel received their tele-vote.
--> They also gave their 12 points to Luxembourg (represented by an Israeli) which is not Entirely fishy as maybe they just appreciated the performance, however given her lower scores from other participating countries, seems a tad fishy.
--> The Israeli ministry for foreign affairs also allegedly assisted in funding Israel's voting campaign on youtube (from what I understand, the government is supposed to be seperate from the broadcaster in ESC, hence why Russia was disqualified (and not for their invasion of Ukraine))
--> PRIOR to the competition when 'October rain' was repeatedly rejected for being 'too political', Israel's PM? stepped in to ensure the lyrics & song would be apolitical enough to enter. Were this not political, why would the PM step in?
--> ALSO you forgot Eric Saade's performance not being posted following his wearing a Keffiyeh around his wrist during his SF1 performance of 'Popular'
--> Not to mention all of the booing Golan received during all of her performances, and the subsequent anti-booing tech.
--> Also that ESC's biggest sponsor (Moroccanoil) is an Israeli brand, and again, to me kinda confirms that Israel was never going anywhere.
--> Not to mention Israel began their military offensive in Rafah whilst ESC was going on (aka using it as a cover).
However overall, I think that Joost's DQ has overshadowed a lot of the political discourse behind the scenes, and perhaps that was the point. Now when you look online, no-one GAF about how heavily politicised this event was, nor Israel's performance. IMO he might've been used as a scapegoat to distract from Israel, but who knows.
However, this isn't new. Russia continued to participate whilst having military offensives in Georgia and Ukraine (that I know of), and were only DQ'd because broadcasters banded together, not because they'd invaded Ukraine. ESC DGAF.

And even so, Russia did everything possible to ignore Donbass for 8 years and try to diplomatically stick it back into Ukraine. All of which happen every after the illegal U.S.-backed coup in 2014. The "referendum" that Russia organised was not lawful by any international or Ukrainian law, I don't see the point in arguing it further. Maidan was obviously supported by the Western powers, it does not make it a right-wing coup - the majority of Ukrainians supported it. The Marie Antoinette quote was definitely not said by her. The "she apparently said brioche" is also incorrect because brioche is exactly what the French version says: "Qu'ils mangent de la brioche". There is no cake in the original language, it has always been brioche.
As for the quote, it is at least 24 older than the French Revolution, and found in Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Confessions, in which he attributes this to a "great princess" (which was never identified and it is possible that JJR invented the anecdote and there was never a true person behind it). At the time of this publication, Marie Antoinette was nine years old and still living in Austria.

Dismissing it as just "protecting old clothes" shows that you don't view fashion as either a valid art or history that is worth preserving. I think people who think this should probably analyse why they think this, because that sentiment is often tied to misogny/internalised misogny that labels clothing and fashion as "just women's things" and therefore unimportant and frivolous, or just anti-inellectual sentiment that doesn't care for the arts or history. The MET is a charity and the Gala is ultimately a fundraiser. You can care about two things at the same time. Not only do you not have to feel guilty about liking the Met Gala, but you SHOULD care about the Met Gala because PRESERVATION OF HISTORICAL ARTEFACTS IS IMPORTANT.

    • @sapphic.flower
      @sapphic.flower 6 місяців тому +5

@@victoriangm7774 I'm not dismissing the importance of restoration and reserving historical artifacts like fashion, I love fashion and it's exactly why the met has been my guilty pleasure.
However, it pales in comparison to what's happening in Palestine and frankly does end up feeling frivolous when the Met is treated with higher value than the lives of people in the middle east. Protecting art and fashion is valuable but it doesn't mean anything when the world is burning and genocide is happening before our eyes.
I understand why you think my comment came off as misogynistic, I don't appreciate when fashion is belittled just because it's a feminine interest, but feminism isn't about enjoying nice clothes or stanley cups (because there are also some women saying it's sexist to criticize that). It's a pink-washed depiction of materialism and consumerism that obfuscates its lack of ethics. Fashion can be political and feminist but if our focus is actually on feminism and not just defending our love of fashion, then our priority should be on the war crimes and genocides of other countries.

I'm from Malmö, and I can say this whole affair has been very invasive and oppressive for our city. They turned Folkets Park - the most beloved and frequented park in the city - into "Eurovision village" and had cops with semi-automatics patrol the park. Until now, I have only seen cops with semis when I was visiting the US. They banned all displays of Palestine solidarity and protests in the park, so people were camping outside the park instead. They removed Palestine graffiti from the street art wall but later said they "made a mistake."
I'm not even going to talk about how inconvenient and intimidating all this extra security and police presence was elsewhere in the city, or how the contest screwed with the commuters. We have so many people of Palestinian descent living in Malmö, so this event felt almost like a punishment on our city. I'm so proud of our people for protesting though.

@@TeddyKrimsonyexactly but there is lesser known ethnic Russian groups such as Tatars, Circassians, Targaryen, Siberian, and other non-Germanic ethnic groups.
Do yall know that there is some Asian Russians but they will barely show it in Russian media and Russian social media channels. I’ve been to Russian media and Russian social media. They only show the European-looking Russians instead of the Asiatic Russians who live in Eastern Russia instead of Western Russia 😕
This is Vladimir’s propaganda to make Russia turn out to be a ethnostate and ethnocentric country without ethnic diversity. He is supporting ethnic cleansing of Uyghur Chinese Muslims in Southern China because they are seen as an inferior race and ethnicity. It is so gross and disgusting that Russian media is promoting this racism towards their own ethnic minorities 😔

A lot of people don't consider them a European country because they aren't especially popular in Europe and most of their landmass being in Asia is a good enough excuse to not count them. Some people also like to argue that they don't count as culturally European either, which is something that has historically given a lot of Russian intellectuals an identity crisis.

Especially this. I hate having to dunk on Palestine supporters in any way but I've noticed this glaring issue of people jumping on hate bandwagons for female celebrities and ignoring the amount of male celebrities who are openly zionist and have shown support for israel. Keanu Reeves is still lauded as the perfect man he's always been viewed as with very little clapback. Jack Black is still portrayed as the loveable guy everyone thinks he is despite his stance on israel and his past associations with autism speaks. I still see so many male zionists on my social media feeds with people responding to them normally, whilst female celebrities with ties to israel get their comments absolutely flooded. There are some exceptions, like Noah Schnapp, but they're far and few in between. The majority of (deserved) hate is geared at female celebrities while the male ones have been let off scott free.

Do people even remember the Met Gala is not a red carpet but a charity event? I'm doubting they even raise money for their collections anymore, rich people get so much free shit just being there when they are supposedly there to benefit that. The gift bags are apparently WILD. People really missed that important context with KimK destroying Marilyn Munroe's historic dress, it made it so much worse. I've worked in the arts & between the Sacklers + the Met Gala I'm even more disgusted by how art plays out on the global/pop culture stage today.

The European Broadcasting Union area encompasses several countries that are outside Europe (some in the Middle East and some in North Africa), so the idea that Eurovision is only for Europe is not true. But I believe one reason people aren't aware that actually such a wide geographic area is eligible to participate is that many countries have simply never participated. Some have never shown interest but some such as Lebanon expressed interest in joining but then withdrew. I suspect part of the reason some of these countries do not participate is that the rules would require them to recognise Israel in their broadcast.

The one thing that I had internalized from it, though, was that something akin to the hunger games, with the rich playing dress-up and sensationalizing everything and another group of people in inconceivable suffering, could never happen. Things are so much more different now. You can watch the dystopias from all these movies play out in real time now.

25:44 yes! It was right that they banned Russia from participating and showed such support for Ukraine during the broadcast, it was what they should’ve done. I’m Russian myself (genuinely trying to move out of the country, but it is hard due to young age and how expensive it is…) and was glad that Russia was excluded. Never was a fan of Eurovision, but it is so disappointing that Israel was not excluded, and, in fact, any Palestine support was punished… what a broken world and broken we live in…

Someone else in the comments section also pointed this out but when Russia invaded Crimea and the Donbass in 2014, the EBU did nothing and still let them compete in that year's compeition. They only disqualified them in 2022 when 9 countries threatened to withdraw. It's also ironic that they made Isntreal change it's song lyrics for being "too political" when in 2009, just a year after the invasion of Georgia, Russia (Who also hosted the contest that year) conducted a performance that was straight up militay propaganda complete with army uniforms and tanks, while Georgia was banned from participating for being "too political"
So yeah, I'm not a Eurovision fan, but it seems to be that they only disquality countries the moment it treathens their contest

What I don't understand about this years met gala, the theme was particularly tone deaf, but it also provided the option of showing up in a peasants outfit with a pitchfork. And not a single celebrity thought of that? It would've been so easy to win (at least part of) the public's opinion with that. Why was EVERYONE cosplaying as the aristocrats or the flowers (their tool of escaping the peasant revolt)?

This may have already been mentioned, but the median US wage is only $48,060/year, not $60k. It can be confusing when you look it up, because the “average” given is skewed high since the mega earnings of the rich cancels out billions of people earning the federal minimum wage of $15k/yr, but the median is a better indicator of what more people actually make.

It's wild how proximity to whiteness blatantly has impacted the perception of Israel and the perception of Palestine, and the Ukraine... Etc
My one thing about Marie Antoinette was literally just that she didn't say either permutation of those phrases as the phrase itself was published in a satire before she was on the throne (or even born). The sentiment is important, but so is historical accuracy and attribution. With proper historical accuracy and attribution we would be able to note how immensely long Israel has been occupying and committing attrocities against Palestine. The length of time of it all... It is horrendous. I do feel, as a creator with no virtual audience that there is almost nothing i can do to contribute, which is why I rarely post about it. But when I'm given a chance to speak about anything, I will and I do.

    • @doit2810
      @doit2810 6 місяців тому +1

It's not whiteness. It's about the western world. Ukraine is at Europe's borders. Europe is a pillar of the West and an ally of the US so the US gives it more importance. Compared to that, Muslims and Arab countries have specifically rebuked American and European alliances. To say why the US doesn't care about that part of the world makes sense because the US isn't invested there, not about whiteness. If China invaded Taiwan, it would've more focus than even Ukraine. Now tell me, are Taiwanese white now?

One of the things that everyone forgets is that celebrities don’t actually pay themselves for the tickets. Brands do. Brands buy out tables and then they choose a designer to represent them. The designer then chooses guests (usually celebrities).
The MET costume department doesn’t have funding from the MET, so some fundraiser is necessary.
I don’t know if the Met Costume department needs these many millions of dollars for their work. I don’t work in costume preservation, so I don’t know. But it would be nice if brands which purchased the tickets to the Met also donated to Palestine humanitarian aid.

Unfortunately, us normal folk do not have the power or reach to do that. And celebs speaking out about topics can make them less taboo and actually encourage more people to seek out info on a topic they're on the fence about. And im sorry, if you still think that emailing your local politicians or voting is going to help when the entire colonialist, imperialist, zionist machinery is working to make sure that they win, you're delusional. The only thing that will help is the people. And to reach people, we need those with influence.
