You showed me the one thing I needed. I was struggling to get the steering column back on from underneath. Pulling the steering wheel up to it's fullest extent made it easy! Thanks
Thanks. I'll try this approach the next time my SL550 steering wheel freezes up. It's done it twice. I found instructions somewhere that said to gently use my knees/thighs to push up on the steering wheel while pushing the control button up. Sort of the same thing but maybe gentler and it does work, too. Mine gets frozen, I think, because I forget and use the wheel to pull myself out of the car and disengage the small gear. Not smart.
gonna try this on my pop's SL550 next time I'm with it. Praying it works but sure as hell seems like it should. This is something the manufacturers should be responsible for making right - it's a defective design and annoying. But as long as the fix is this simple and doesn't cause more trouble, I guess we have to let it slide. The strealership did it once for him and then said they'd have to replace the part, which would only l lead to it happening again, right? So that'd be ~$1500 down the drain. Ridic. Thanks for the vid!! That car sounds amazing!
I have this issue will give it go in the morning! Sadly it didn't work and I gave it a bit of welly, same issues as you moves in and out but not up or down, it had been sticking but now seems stuck fast.
No go for my 2005 CLK 320. I watched another video showing how to replace the rubber hourglass-shaped joint between the electric motor and the gearbox on the column. Have the 8 dollar joint from MB and working up the courage to pull down the column. Wish there was a good video on the details of doing that.
Bought GL550 a few years ago with the exact same issue. Moving the switch up/down only resulted in a feint click (ostensibly from the relays that supply power to the motors). First hit, the clicks got louder. Second hit, clicks got MEASURABLY louder. Third hit, I could actually hear the motors actuating, but I could only hear a loud whirring/buzzing sound, similar to what sounds like nylon gears grinding against one another. So I definitely unstuck >something
I'm confused. So the column only tilts and retracts/extends. It seems reasonable to assume then that if you have the easy entry selected the unit moves every time you use the car so shouldn't seize???
@@killerhertzmercedes I guess it does, I might check mine in a mo, not that it makes a difference - I'm the only person that drives that car and I never change the setting.

That is how I got mine resolved on my 2014 E350.......I was not aware that was the procedure called out by MB ..freaking awesome LOL
Wow. It works in my C250 too. This is very good advice!
Holy Cow !!!! It worked. I had to hit the column but fabulous. Thank you so much. ❤
Unbelievable, that worked for me.
Thank you!
The most funniest diy I ever seen
Worked for my E63 AMG - two 'knocks' and it was sorted 👍
Had to knock mine from underneath but worked like a charm 2014 E350!
Thank you so much, it worked 😆

Actually your method of pushing it with the knees while adjusting the control up just worked for me!
I had to knock the wheel up instead of down but it worked on my 2012 ML350!

I've done it twice since making the video. it generally lasts a couple of months. Then just repeat the process
My w204 steering wheel has been stuck for 7 months in 1 position, i genuinely can't believe this worked

have the same issue on my 2013 G63, will try this technique later

I get you, if it's in constant use then it shouldnt seize, but it still does from time to time. Known fault, especially on R231 SLs

doesn't work for my car, but still recommend the video!
Done exactly the same on my 13 cls lol
😂😂😂😂
