- Profile of Ed Cassidy. Former drummer and founder of the rock group "Spirit." Ed was in his 80's when this story was done in around 2003. He billed himself then as "The World's Oldest Rock and Roll Drummer."
I started a little blues band somewhere in the late 80s with Cas. We only made it through about 3 rehearsals when he had to bail to go back out on the road with Spirit. It was an honor. He's an amazing musician.
Great video man. Sad to hear Ed has left us, but at 89 at least he notched up some years unlike a lot of other people in the rock world. Spirit were such an under-rated band and Ed himself was an amazing drummer. The music will never die Ed.
I met this legend!
He was the heaviest dude in rock and roll... no one really comes close to his story, talent and coolness 😎
A class act. I had the honor of playing with Ed after Randy was gone. His point about todays' lackluster music scene is well taken by me, and I'm doing something about it. My name is Slinger -aka- Michael Carpenter, and you can see the beginning of my efforts at this channel: crimescenestudios .........It ain't over yet Cass, I'm bringin' it.
We all need Spirit.... Thank you.
Rock on, Cass! Thanks for posting this, Genehaa!!!
Great clip! Ed Cassidy, if you're reading this, I'm the guy who has a jazz big band that plays the music of Frank Zappa. You and I emailed a few years ago. My band does "Aren't You Glad" sometimes in our Zappa shows. I'm still a huge fan of Spirit. My favorite album is Clear. Amazing tunes, playing, etc. Yu're the best!
Age be damned, Cassidy was a phenomenal drummer in the tradition of Rich, Krupa, Bellson. "Spirit" is all about inspiration and the music lives on.
ED'S < SPIRIT > LIVES ON !!!!!
Eine gute Erinnerung gehabt als Ad Cassidy in Essen Grugahalle spielte. Sein markantes Merkmal sind seine Glatze und seine big Drums.
Brilliant. He must be 86 now (as I thought he was born the 4th of May 1923)! Hope he is still doing well. Send him my regards.
R.I.P. Ed.You were the coolest!
An absolute legend, a musical genius, a wonderful life.
Calling 60 Minutes! Do an interview with the now 88-year-old Cassidy. Also, would it be interesting to see Spirit in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame? Would Cas live to see it happen?
RIP, Ed....
so many great bands back then. the ones that still really move me are traffic, niel young, buffy street marie, jackson, and, of course, spirit. been singin/playing nature's way for longtemps. now there's a song that spells it right out. others i can think of are after the goldrush, now that the buffalo is gone, and almost anything by winwood. . .people who speak for the earth and her majic life. earth first! journal, alice de mecile, lone wolf circles, walkin' jim stoltz, paul watson. . . .
LOL just spotted myself in the concert footage. upper right-hand corner under wxrt Banner wearing white T shirt and sunglasses.
Good to see one of the Greats
