I noticed as well that Peter didn't embrace his mother. He moved out of his home, starting when he went to boarding high school in another state (Deerfield Academy?). That is not that much time living together as a family. Manhattan has had many quality high schools for the well to do. I don't know why he couldn't have stayed living at home for high school.
Was Henry Morgan physically challenged when this show was made? I ask because he didn't get up and 'mingle' at the end like everyone else did. +Michael Mantle I thinks its because Peter Gabel isnt someone famous and ole Henry fails to find the humor in the whole situation. He was a cantankerous (sp?) old guy from what I remember watching him in the 60s, 70s. lol
Physical challenges could be worked around…happened with Bill Cullen all the time, who ALWAYS mingled at the end of Syn IGAS. Morgan, from all accounts, was kind of a jerk.
I have a passing acquaintance with Peter Gabel through my job and to be honest at least in my opinion he is a very strange person. He's always very frumpy looking as if he needs a shampoo bath and access to a washing machine. I spoke to him on the street one day and later someone asked why I was talking to a homeless man.
Peter Gabel and one of Bennett Cerf's sons, Jonathan Cerf were friends. They attended Deerfield Boarding School at the same time. Upon graduation, both boys studied at Harvard. I think perhaps the frumpy look came later in Peter's life and was perhaps a Berkley influence. Arlene and Martin were close friends to Bennett Cerf and his wife. I was not familiar with Deerfield boarding school, so brought it up on the net. It has a beautiful campus.

That Soupy ,he guessed Arlene's son !
He favors his dad .
Now I see a mrs arlene in color
Found out Peter Gabel died in October 2022 of a heart attack.
Wow, it went into colour!!
Edit - Oh it’s Arlene’s son!! 🤣
RIP Peter Gabel
Why didn’t he get involved in show business? He chose college and law school in lieu of the jungles of Vietnam. Not that I blame him.
Anyone know the original air date of this WML episode? 1973 or 1974 is what I've narrowed it down to.
I don't know Chuck,
*****
Right after I wrote this, I found two collector's websites that list taping dates (being syndicated, an air date would be difficult to ascertain). Looks like this episode was taped on Dec. 27, 1973.
It says 1973 in the end credits.
Peter looks more like his dad than his mother.
Hmm, Peter is a handsome rascal, isn't he!?! Trying to fool his Mama...😆
Peter definitely looks Armenian here (Arlene had Armenian ancestry on her father's side).
***** If you couldn't tell by my last name, I am also Armenian-American. 95% of last names that end with "Ian" or "Yan" are of Armenian origin.
WE GET IT BABE WITH THE SAME COMMENT OVER AND OVER,YOUR AN ANTI-SEMITE AND OBVIOUSLY NOT SHY ABOUT IT.
What was her mother?
If Arlene is representative, then Armenians are a beautiful stock.
He looks just like his dad.
it would be, for the longest time they actually had a stage show hosted by J. Keith van Stratten. They had dependents of the host and panelists as mystery guests and panelists themselves. I'd host this show for free.
What year broadcast was this?
I think Peter Gabel made his appearance as a guest for the second time in "What's My Line." He was a guest for the first time back in 1964, when he was still a teenager.
Bluejeans0701 I've seen that clip. They just referred to him as Mr. X with the panel blindfolded (of course). Back then, his line was a guide at the New York World's Fair.
Bluejeans0701 He has been a guest 3 times.
+Purple Capricorn That's right. He was also on with Jonathan Cerf, Bennett's son, as co-editors of the Harvard Lampoon.
He also made an appearance on I've Got a Secret with Jonathan Cerf and Dorothy's children.
watch: 04:22-04:28 notice that she embraces him but he does not want to raise his arms to embrace her...in another interview he stated that he grew up in an "envelope" and didn't have much opportunity to just "be" with his parents...I'm sure they had a good relationship...but being the son of two very talented and successful show business people must have left him many a times where they really couldn't connect as much as he would have wanted.
She wanted to make sure that he went to Harvard...it was "her" son!@@valentinr.dominguez2892
A younger PG was also a mystery guest in the original version 🎩
No, I like the John Daly version much better.
Was Henry Morgan physically challenged when this show was made? I ask because he didn't get up and 'mingle' at the end like everyone else did. Could it be he was just being Henry Morgan, and was miffed because Soupy jumped his ID of Peter Gabel? It wouldn't be the first time that Henry has tsouris with other panel members.
+Michael Mantle I thinks its because Peter Gabel isnt someone famous and ole Henry fails to find the humor in the whole situation. He was a cantankerous (sp?) old guy from what I remember watching him in the 60s, 70s. lol
Michael, he was just mentally challenged. 😁
Morgan was talented for sure, but his ego always ruined it.
Physical challenges could be worked around…happened with Bill Cullen all the time, who ALWAYS mingled at the end of Syn IGAS. Morgan, from all accounts, was kind of a jerk.
Look at 04:24....it's very telling that he doesn't hug his mother in return
No it's not "telling".
Peter always seemed rather annoyed when his mother couldn’t guess who he was.
Well he looks a bit difficult
What happened to the original host?
Elle, if you’re talking about John Daly he went on todo something else, I can’t remember what. I think he didn’t want to do the show in the daytime.
John Daly passed away in 1991. Larry Blyden passed away in 1975. Bing is my friend. Google is the enemy.
He was too classy for what the daytime plan was. Said no thanks. He resisted change on the Sunday eve shows, even threatened to walk once.
John Daly took a job with the US Information Agency--running the Voice of America shortwave radio network, IIRC.
the sinister morgan wasnt even payin attention with the peter 's interview portion. nor stood up to chat at the end of the show
I found him to be very rude on the show, at times.
Arlene is so beautiful and stunning and Gorgeous too 💖💯
Looks like his father!
I guess Soupy guessed it correctly.
He looks like Harold Ramis
What year?.
4:16 Did Henry Morgan fall asleep or something?
Peter looks like his father.
Peter Gabel has been said to resemble a typical Marxist J€w. Did the father have similar looks?
He looks like his father
What year was this in color ?
The police review must have been too controversial, seemed to be the host rushed off the air once the subject was brought up.
Harold Ramis before there was Harold Ramis.
I thought it said "Peter Gabriel"
Me too!😄
BTW, her son is a cutie
They should turn the comment section off!!
Arlene was the original GILF!
Soupy fooled Arlene Francis.
Don't u think that boarding school would have an effect on some and not in an especially good way?
oh my god! looks like you were blesses with an oversized mouth an an undersized brain.
Also, they were President and Vice President of the Harvard Lampoon. Check WML dated 3/12/67
