Tom, my man. At the time of its release, this tutorial was one of the most valuable pieces of content I ever saw and 4 years later it still is. Thank you very much.
Tom you are the best! This is something I have been wondering and worrying about mixing my GH4, 5DMK11 and my Sony AX100. Can't thank you enough for this would give you ten thumbs up if I could! Cheers, Pete
This information is absolute gold. I had to stumble through and learn all of this stuff on my own. It's pretty great that you summarized it and made it really easy for people to digest. Researching each piece took me a lot of time. Thanks, Tom.
Thank you very much for this info. This is the most helpful video I have seen. Coming from still photography, most of everything has been the same, but I have never had so much trouble matching color with different cameras doing stills.
This is awesome, thanks man. I tried using it with the colorbars on my clapperboard, worked pretty well actually - at least got me in the ballpark so I could tweak it afterwards!
What I’ve found using these color charts is that even after you correct using this ... once you throw a color grade lut on top of the corrected footage , it still acts weird
Tom, In order to achieve color matching as you describe it in this video, could you please tell me which version of 3d Color Lut Creator I can buy. Looking for the least expensive. Thank you!
Fantastic detailed tutorial as always! If one is pressed for time and has multiple scenes to match, its worth editing in DaVinci Resolve since you can match with the color checker in the program itself.
Does this apply to smartphone cameras also? If not, do u know of any other color matching software programs that matches cameras as well as smartphone cameras? Thank you! Awesome tutorial!!!
Do you have a tutorial like this using just premiere pro with lumitri and color channel mixer stuff? I want to learn to use histograms, RGB parade, etc properly when grading
Great video. Thanks for this! I have 3DLut Creator that i use for photography. I need to upgrade to the PRO edition to access that grid feature. I didn't even know that feature existed!
Hi Tom. Thanks for this. What version of 3DLutCreator did you use? (Grading Edition: $99, Standard: $199, or Pro: $249)? The site isn't clear at all what the differences are.
So annoying! This is really deceptive advertising that they don’t explain this ANYWHERE in their documentation, and it’s really the only reason I bought it.
Wonderful video, thank you for such a great tutorial. I've been matching colors by eye from different cameras so far.. I wonder if it's possible to match a drone footage with a cinema camera video, without using a color card?
Doesn't seem like you can purchase 3D lut creator in the U.S. anymore.. Is there any way to match colors if you forgo your custom lut and just want the cameras to match?
This is really great, thank you. We met at NAB last week at the Atomos dinner; I’m sorry we didn’t get to talk more. Are you using Resolve as well now? If so, do you know if this is possible inside of Resolve without having to generate a LUT externally? I never thought about using the color checker to create a LUT/grade on a chart in a shot that you already like the look of; I’ve always thought of charts as having to revert to a “correct” base line, then build a look from there. This is really cool!
JP JP you can create luts in lots of programs including Photoshop but you will not be able to create luts thst match your footage like you can do in 3d lut creator so unfortunately you have to get this program if you want to do camera matching like I did here
Hi Tom, i was wondering... I use 3 sony's for streaming and one black m pocket 4k and i can't get the color match right in Vmix...now i can load a lut in the blkmc ...how can i make a match lut to look like a sony a7 or a6300?
Hey Tom! Is there a way to use the photo xrite to video? If there is how would you do it in the 3d lut creator? The lines don't match at all on the custom mode.
Tom, love the channel, always precise and clear, without all that wacky American stuff. I belong to a film making club and we make collaborative films using several different cameras. I'm trying to learn colour correction and grading, I have FCPX .4 now with all its wonderful colour tools, but still no tool for X rite!', I have not had the opportunity as yet to test FCPX's colour balance tool to match cameras do I need X-rite or does the Balance Colour tool in FCPX do a good enough job? I have a cheap colour chart bought from Hong Kong which follows the same layout as X-rite, but so far, even if I crop to it it does not do a better job than just using colour balance on the entire frame. Andy Wills from England.
Hi. I've only just come across this video. I have a question. do the cameras have to be set up before filming or can it be done with the shot 'footage'?
my 3d lut creator created 1 lut for me and than i can't create anymore help plz when i save the lut and i go to the folder where i saved it i can't find it
Can someone explain (or link to an explanation of) how to do this on Davinci Resolve? Or any other software? The software he talks about here isn't available in the US.
Hi Tom, Nice video thanks! Could you tell me which version of the 3d lut creator you downloaded? There is a "grading" one for only 99 dollars, do you know if that allows for the same features as you present in your video? Cheers
Tom, thanks for great advices. Maybe you can make tutorial, how to match different cameras when you shot indoor run and gun production in various light conditions (e.g.: music event or symposium)?
One little trick is that when you have color checker selected from the drop down menu and position on the image you can just go to Save and it will save new color reference. Also it's sometimes good idea to rolloff highlights and shadows from the curves after you make a match.
Hi Tom - nice tutorial! I have a different question: How do you set your focus well for your youtube videos in case you are alone? Because I guess you can´t operate your camera while you are sitting in front of it. So do you have any hints? - thanks, Karsten
I set up an object where I am gonna be standing or sitting. For my I usually put a light stand with a color board like the ones I show in this video. This way I get the colors reference and I can set my focus. I focus my camera on the light stand. Then I hit record and go in-front of the camera but i put the light stand with the checker board aside and i stand in its place.
Weird. I would first correct them with x-rite as reference and AFTER that apply the look I want. What would otherwise be the purpose of the x-rite card.
So is there a way to do it if you don't have the 3D lut program? This is really nice and all but if we don't have 3D lut then this tutorial is useless right?
SUPER helpful video, Tom! Quick question: Which version of 3D LUT Creator are you using? I'm on a budget, but I want to make sure I purchase the version that will allow me to do this most effectively.
I am the same as Ashley Simeonov, There are three version which are Grading editon, Standard and Pro. I believe you are using Pro version? Can we use Grading edition instead? many thanks.
Tom, I'm having some issues using a really low cost Checker, it's "Less than 3 neutral color were found, please check tour values". Do you recommend something to do? Thanks!!!
Great Video. In 3D Lut Creator, do you have to buy the full professional version of the software to do this technique or can it be done with the grading version?
Tom, I tried on my GH5 to replicate what you have shown using the passport color checker and the 3D LUT program and I'm unable to replicate it. For some reason the gray color does not match the passport color board. I tried 50% and less on the camera but still a bit off. I tried to over and under expose each way by one or two notches and cannot get the perfect blend with the gray to match the passport gray :( Any tips, please?
Hey Tom, great video! Can I ask, where did you get the clamp/holder that your Xrite Color Checker Video is sitting on? Does it have a brand name or a generic purpose name for its use? :)
These color grading vids are my new favorites from all over UA-cam.
Excellent tutorial.
Very very useful! Thanks a lot
This information is absolute gold. I had to stumble through and learn all of this stuff on my own. It's pretty great that you summarized it and made it really easy for people to digest. Researching each piece took me a lot of time. Thanks, Tom.
As someone who is partially colorblind and struggles a lot with matching cameras... this is honestly a life saver. Thanks for sharing this
thank you, Tom. watching your tutorials for years. very informative and usefull
Thank you very much for this info. This is the most helpful video I have seen. Coming from still photography, most of everything has been the same, but I have never had so much trouble matching color with different cameras doing stills.
Best instruction I've seen so far on color grading thanks a lot.
OMG. YOU ARE THE HERO COLOUR SCIENCE DESERVE!
THANK YOU SO MUCH MAN. You have saved me tons of money.
You a legend keep the good work I love you tutorials on filmmaking so much information
Hi, Tom. Could you tell us what that bracket is that is holding your colour cards on the stand?
My favorite video of yours so far! Probably because I woke up thinking about camera matching haha
I always seem to learn something from your video. Thank you!
YES. I've needed to know how to do this for so long!!
What do you do if you didn't use a colour chart?
You close your eyes and hope the auto-balance tool in your NLE works great
Amazing. I will probably watch this every couple of months.
Hey Tom, what mount are you using for your xrite card? Thanks!
Can I do this with the free version of 3D LUT? If not, which version is the least expensive that can do all you're doing here? Thanks!!!
Can I make this process for simpler cameras, like a Canon T5i, gopro and drone cameras?
Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Hey Tom, can you give the reference of the Lanparte "holder" you use to hold the X-Rite Color Checker Video ?
How about doing the same thing with only davinchi resolve without 3d lut creator?
Tom, In order to achieve color matching as you describe it in this video, could you please tell me which version of 3d Color Lut Creator I can buy. Looking for the least expensive. Thank you!
Fantastic detailed tutorial as always! If one is pressed for time and has multiple scenes to match, its worth editing in DaVinci Resolve since you can match with the color checker in the program itself.
Good stuff Tom!
Thank you Tom! because I bought color card!
Thank you for your shearing your knowledge.
Great tutorial! Thanks!
Well, so that program is needed besides the editing program?
Does this apply to smartphone cameras also? If not, do u know of any other color matching software programs that matches cameras as well as smartphone cameras? Thank you! Awesome tutorial!!!
this is amazing! Thank you.
Tom You are the man! The Best. Thank youuuuu Brother
Use ful info bro
Great tutorial! Thanks a lot. I will use this technique when grading my next multi-cam shoot. Cheers
Thank you Tom for this test . I am more confident to get Xrite color chart
Very helpful. Thanks Tom.
Do you have a tutorial like this using just premiere pro with lumitri and color channel mixer stuff? I want to learn to use histograms, RGB parade, etc properly when grading
Fantastic, thanks Tom.
Is it possible to do this same process with Davinci resolve alone?
yes
Very, very helpful. Thank you
Thanks for the great video,
With version would you suggesties for matching cameras?
Great tut! I love this program. PS I looks like the chart is inverted and upside down @ the 19:05 mark.
Great video. Thanks for this! I have 3DLut Creator that i use for photography. I need to upgrade to the PRO edition to access that grid feature. I didn't even know that feature existed!
Tom, this is legendary. Thank you so much!
You are a Genius!!!!!
Hi Tom. Thanks for this. What version of 3DLutCreator did you use? (Grading Edition: $99, Standard: $199, or Pro: $249)? The site isn't clear at all what the differences are.
Sadly, he is using the Pro. I just bought the Grading Edtion and it doesn't have the tool that he uses to get the color chart grid.
So annoying! This is really deceptive advertising that they don’t explain this ANYWHERE in their documentation, and it’s really the only reason I bought it.
@@michaelarmstrong8092 davincci does the same thing but free
Can you tell us how you create the better Ursa mini lut than the default 3d luts creator one (bluish one).
Tom, great job man! thank you!
Can you do that in Resolve more easily ?
What a great video. So does camera color science matter if you can just match any camera to any other camera with a simple lut?
Wonderful video, thank you for such a great tutorial. I've been matching colors by eye from different cameras so far.. I wonder if it's possible to match a drone footage with a cinema camera video, without using a color card?
the biggest advertiser on the web.
How about for Live Broadcast? Can it be done for live applications? Thanks in advanced Tom!
Doesn't seem like you can purchase 3D lut creator in the U.S. anymore.. Is there any way to match colors if you forgo your custom lut and just want the cameras to match?
How well have you found the matching of camera colors hold after doing heavy grading?
Ok, I have a question, what about balancing all the clips to the x rite and then applying the Lutz?
This is exactly one of my goals to work on this year.
This is really great, thank you. We met at NAB last week at the Atomos dinner; I’m sorry we didn’t get to talk more. Are you using Resolve as well now? Am I correct by saying that you can create custom LUTS with photoshop? Or the 3D LUTS Creator is needed?
JP JP you can create luts in lots of programs including Photoshop but you will not be able to create luts thst match your footage like you can do in 3d lut creator so unfortunately you have to get this program if you want to do camera matching like I did here
Thanks a lot for the prompt reply.

yes if you do the right lut and apply it in camera it will look the same coming out of the HDMI port.
Gotta try this metod! Legend!
Thanks a lot. 🙏♥️🙏
Hey Tom! Is there a way to use the photo xrite to video? If there is how would you do it in the 3d lut creator? The lines don't match at all on the custom mode.
Could I use photoshop to match the colours since I have that already and I don’t have 3D out creator? If so how would I do that?
Thanks very much Tom.
Thank's! You are the best! Great tips! Thank You
You are welcome!
Could you use the colour charts you get at the local hardware store? I am a cheap skate and on a tight budget
Interesting...worth a shot
Should you use this for every new scene/location?
I use the Sony camera and not shooting raw nor a high bitrate.
Or would a grey card be enough?
Really loving your feed! ♪♪♪
this is smart thx for sharing
Wonder how well Premiere color match hold up to this

I have a Canon XF300 HD camera and a Panasonic DVX200. The XF300 does not have any log profile. Can I still match the two cameras?
Yes... it doesnt matter if you shoot log or not.

So what edition do I need to purchase just to create custom luts for Premier Pro with matching of color targets
? Grading, Standard or Pro?
Thanks
Pro unfortunately
Thank you 👏 grateful.
Weird. I would first correct them with x-rite as reference and AFTER that apply the look I want. What would otherwise be the purpose of the x-rite card.
Can't you do the same think as 3d lut creator in Davinci resolve free? It has a colour matcher just like that one

Great Video. In 3D Lut Creator, do you have to buy the full professional version of the software to do this technique or can it be done with the grading version?
Curious if you ever found out your answer
Can you do this in FCPX? If so, how?
How are you supposed to do all this if you cut and edit BEFORE doing color correction/matching...like most people tend to do? If you don’t make LUTs.
Hi Tom, love the color videos, very helpful! Do you prefer the large Colorchecker or the smaller passport for video shoots?
I tried this method but the result is really noisy... I might be doing something wrong... but is there something I'm missing?
