  • Welcome back to DieseJL where today we dive in to just how loud our Sky One-Touch Power Top and our JL Wrangler EcoDiesel are. This is one thing we have been frustrated with since we have gotten our Jeep - it is LOUD! Normal driving can see 92dB while driving on a windy freeway will put you well over the 95dB range. We are not sure what part of the Jeep causes it to be loud, but in this video we try to dive into how much the Sky One-Touch Power Top comes into play.
    Special thanks to Jim and Amanda for letting us use their Wrangler to test!

    I have a 2018 JK and we just got my wife a brand new 2022 Sahara with Sky top and can say without a doubt, the sky top is much quieter than my hard top JK. Couldn't believe the difference. So far, we are thrilled with the sky top and also live in MIchigan. Your rubicon tires may be the cause of your extra road noise. My JK has 33 with aggressive tread pattern and is way louder with the hard top on than my wifes jeep. I am seriously considering buying a 2022 rubicon with the sky top. love the ease of operation.

    I briefly considered the Sky One Touch Top, but the noise levels were concerning. I ended up going with the body colored 3 piece hardtop with Hotheads headliners, with a Bestop Sunrider for warmer weather. That combo cost less than the Sky One Touch option.

    I'm not sure if I'd call a decrease from ~89 decibels in the back seat to ~86 a "6 or 7 decibel decrease".
    3 decibels is still very significant, but not by that much.

    Hothead Headliners now offers their product for the Sky Top. It's 3 layers and helps hold out the heat in summer, keep in the heat during winter, and reduces sound levels in the cabin. Seems like a no brainer if you own one of these tops. They have a full install video on here.
    TFL did a sound test on the Sky Top with an actual db meter on a very windy day. Their levels were no where near 90. The high was about 70 db. 90 db is slightly louder than a push mower and would require you to shout to speak to the person sitting next to you. I'd say the phone app is not very accurate.

    Interesting video. We opted to go with the sky one touch roof over the soft top for a little added security. The difference in the noise level while driving a hardtop versus the sky one touch roof seemed negligible to us.
    I have some questions regarding your testing methods: When you say the two Jeeps that were tested were comparable, I know one was a diesel, was the other one a diesel as well? Did they both have the same suspension system and tires? I also noticed in Amanda‘s Jeep you were holding the phone lower and away from the roof. Could that have affected the results?

    I was able to reduce the noise caused by wind turbulence simply by adding some cheap self adhesive weather stripping along the top edge of the windshield. This slightly diverts the air above the one touch top. That said, I made it significantly worse when I added my KC LIGHT BAR...it’s now a tornado in my Jeep...

I just find I almost never take the front panels off or the top off....Just too much effort and always afraid it might rain or something. The noise is a concern though as my wife complains about the noise as it is. Also, wondering if you notice any differences in cabin temperature with the One touch? Does it feel colder in the winter months? Or does heat seep in on hot summer days when? Basically the sound and temperature control are my two concerns. It sure would be nice to have that ease of top opening though.

      @@dieseJL in my business, we used to run BIG NG engines and compressors, 90 db is LOUD and in time can cause hearing damage. I can’t imagine it being engine noise, but you may think about sitting on your driveway and taking background readings, with everything turned off and then revving the engine to the RPM’s you were going at on the highway and taking readings to see how much the engine contributed. You can always add a hood blanket and some more firewall insulation. Keep In mind noise is not additive, so you will still hear the loudest noise and if wind noise on the top is the biggest contributor, you will still hear it at the same db level, no matter how much you attenuate the engine. At slow speeds, the engine noise will be more significant than the wind noise, so it may make the commute more comfortable.

  • @mrtopcat2
    @mrtopcat2 2 роки тому +1

    Thank you for your efforts to measure and review. I have a hearing issues and so I am very familiar with doctors recommendations about noise levels. Watching your measurements however, I must say that my first response was, there must be something wrong with this measurement. Of course you are the one who is there and not me, yet still forgive me, but I have doubts this can be as loud as near 90db. That said, I found that the phone applications are actually not properly working, regardless of their reviews. You really need a db meter (which I have as I was instructed to have by my doctor). So I would be interested what would be your measurement with a real db meter.
    In any event, I would like to link you the more rigid criteria of OSHA, the NIOSH criteria. To understood as maximum allowable times to prevent hearing damage:
    85 dB A -------- 8 hr
    88 dB A -------- 4 hr
    91 dB A -------- 2 hr
    94 dB A ---------1 hr
    97 dB A -------- 1/2 hr
    100 dB A ------ 15 min
    104 dB A ------ 7.5 min
    107 dB A ------ 3.75 min
    110 dB A ------ 1.85 min
    One more piece of advice from me as someone who is dealing with strong hearing loss. Hearing loss is often cumulative and show up with a strong delay. Meaning even if someone stops abusing their ears now, they may not be out of the woods and the effects may show up later. This is not much different like the negative effects of smoking. Similarly to smoking, not everyone is equally affected by hearing loss. I say this, because people tend to compare themselves with others alike "look this guy was a musician and DJ all his life and no problems". It may work out that way and it may not. In any event once the symptoms start showing up it is too late already.
    Additionally, hearing loss is not like most people with good hearing would assume. It is not like someone has turned down the volume. The worst part with hearing loss is actually that the frequency band is affected unequally. A person with hearing loss may not hear some frequencies while hearing others, sometimes even hearing others louder as the brain tries to compensate. I can tell you it is NOT a comfortable place to be. Hearing aids are a help, but only to a certain degree. If you ask me they really suck, especially having to clean them daily.
    So please everyone do yourself a favor and protect your ears. Wear ear plugs in loud clubs or concerts. Don't be 'cool' like I was. Best wishes to everyone!

    • @dieseJL
      @dieseJL  2 роки тому

      I agree, now whenever I use the app it shows every car is ‘dangerously loud’. It’s probably ok for relative differences but it seems to read 7-10 dB high.
      Couldn’t agree more about noise exposure/hearing loss, it’s scary stuff. Nothing to mess with!

    • @mrtopcat2
      @mrtopcat2 2 роки тому

      @@dieseJL I am glad my well comment was taken positively and no misunderstanding has slipped in.
      I think "7-10 db high" could be the case and this is also what I am getting if I compare my dedicated db meter with the measurements of the phone apps (both Android and iPhone).
      Measurements are of course even more important in my case, to be able to protect the little hearing that I have left (every bit counts, at least presently I can still have a conversation over the phone with hearing aid, although not easily and with lot's of misunderstandings, but still).
      Anyhow, we have a 2017 Wrangler JK Rubicon, that we have custom ordered. The tire noise of the MT was initially for about the first 500 miles remarkably silent. It has then gradually increased. It actually made me wonder if BG-Goodrich has used some other mix in the outer shell of the tire, specifically for sales purposes. Or perhaps the tire was just softer because it was still relatively new. Who knows. Anyhow, long story short, these days the noise is around 82-83db around freeway speeds and this measured with my dedicated db meter.
      As far as hearing loss goes. I am trying to spread the word based on my own bad example. The issue of hearing loss has may not have received enough attention when I was young. These days this subject seems to be catching up a little more with some of the differences now even in plain sight. Just look at for example musicians, many of them now seem to be wearing ear plugs during performance. In Europe hearing protection requirement has become common practice in many trades, alike hard hats have been.
      This was definitely not the case in my old days. But then again, sometime the questions that I am asking myself is then how come bands like the Rolling Stones are OK? That is why I think my comparison of hearing loss with smoking is not out of place. Because it seems like many if not most people may do OK, yet we don't know who in the end will end up doing well and who will not.
      In any event, my doctors that I am seeing told me that many of their patients are coming with backgrounds from construction, mechanics, musicians or people who are working in clubs or loud clubs. So basically all the "loud professions".
      Anyhow, I hope my bad example helps you and your family and well as others who may read this.

    There’s also a product called Sound Assassin tape. I wonder what the sound level of that combined with the hothead headliner would be?

      I added a Hothead Headliner to my 2021 JL with the one touch top and it helped a noticeable amount. The hothead retracts perfectly. I checked with a decibel meter before and I had 87-90 in drivers area. I have not “tested” it after the install. I will do that soon, but I can tell a difference. Hope this helps.

    I like how ya treated your top on another video but buy you greasing it its going to attract dirt and will ruin it unless your not off-roading it then ya will be good longer but be careful unless ya use grease that won't attract dirt

    the fact that noise is less further from engine means it is the engine Screwing the noise pooch. so only way to fix that is not using diesel or trying to sound proof that engine option more. I God will make any call tough imposs or easy if I get chance or hve 2.Nodiesel option going forward of ppl jeep unless sound down to safe level. No 392 from factory either I already made that call,& . See min mpg rating in 2020,2021, 2022. Unless they put green piston star on top of pistons it can't pass mpg rating. Only other except is if running dually tire f350 min rating, or 40miles at 25-29mph notusing any gas commute mode. 2020 min rating is 20 combined mpg& each yr after u need 1 more mpg till 2030.

    the diesel is a plain & simple failure in my mind, bc of added cost & added weight & extra complex exhaust & tooling on the factory nightmare. Stream lining production is what I said not mult drive trains exact opposite of my orders.

    I blame u for making waste 4500 bucks. I can't even talk on the phone going over 40mph because low and behold, the microphone is literally 3 inches away from a piece of cloth that is getting blasted my hurricane Katrina at anything over 45+ mph. I hate it, does it out weigh the ease of having an instant open top, I dont know because I never had a hard/soft top. But I'm currently looked to see if there is a conversion kit for the near future. Since the frame changes I dont believe this is going to be an ez swap... my final rating of one touch 3/10

Chrysler back in the fifties.. yes, 1950’s .. were a leading engineering auto company that rivaled GM and others .. not so today.. greed over quality.. I think their a lot better than 20 years ago but so is everything else.. but price wise you can buy a friggin Lexus GX put some badass wheels on it.. unless your rock crawling your going where the Jeep is.. and if your rock crawling with a 60k Jeep and not one you bought cheap and built yourself you either got a lot of money and don’t care or .. well.. your crazy.. god bless.. hope Jeep silenced this thing down rather than slapping a friggin fiat uninsulated crappy folding top on it.. fiat .. damn.. we deserve better than that shit.
