THE DEVASTATING FALL OF BURY FOOTBALL CLUB - Gigg Lane, Abandoned Stadium

  • Two time FA Cup winners Bury FC were expelled from the EFL in 2019 for financial reasons. Bury were a football league club for their entire history and even finished as high as 4th in the old First Division.
Bury AFC are a phoenix club playing non league football. Can the fan owned club reach the promised land of the EFL again one day?
In this video I visited the abandoned stadium that is Gigg Lane as well as Stainton Park in Radcliffe (AFC Bury's new home).

Hi Sam. I'm a bury fan. Went to the gigg for 27 years. Followed them away too. I miss it. I have cerebral palsy and love to watch football. It just felt like it was ripped away from everyone. There are people I haven't seen since and that is the sad thing for me. Your vlogs are really well researched. I love the history of the clubs you visit.

I am with you, Bury in whatever name, is Bury FC. People or companies that mess Football clubs about can`t take away the history or culture. The club in essence is the same. The history is uninterrupted. Today`s Bury, have won two FA cups. I am not a Bury supporter; but I applaud any efforts to keep the club going.

Steve Dale was never a football fan, in fact, he's stated numerous times that he doesn't like football. Most of the businesses that he was associated with fell into liquidation. The EFL failed Bury FC by not properly doing their due diligence when Dale took over. Dale bought the club for just £1 and he was hoping to get £2 million from a company that was interested in taking the club over, but that collapsed and he rejected four other offers. The EFL and Sale were a fault for Bury FC sad demise.

However, my admiration goes to the fans of the club that are still fighting for the right to the name and trying to get their ground back. Thankfully, they've got an English guy living in America that supported Bury that is backing them. There's hope for them to get back to where they belong.

I have a strong personal connection to Bury and the football club, even though I have lived in Essex all my life, and was gutted when they were expelled from the EFL. My mum was born and bred there, met my dad when he was stationed at the barracks on Bolton Road and spent most of my summer holidays in the 70s staying at my grandma's bungalow just opposite in Buller Street or at other relatives houses nearby. She died in 1977 and is buried in the cemetery just down the road behind the ground. My dad took me to one of my first ever matches at a "big ground" when Bury played Plymouth Argyle in a League match at Gigg Lane and I also remember going to see the reserves play Sheffield United in the Central League there too, plus we even went to a derby League Cup tie at Rochdale too ! Happy memories ... I figure that it won't get me any brownie points judging fron some comments on here, but I am actually related to the Neville Family, Gary & Phil (& Tracy of course!) all having my mum's cousin as a grandmother. The only one I've ever met though was Neville Neville when I popped in the club on a visit a year after my dad died during the build up to Euro 1996 when the two boys were away on the infamous Hong Kong trip (dentist chair!) but he was just too distant a relative to have any idea who I or even my mum was ! It was in one of the buildings near the club shop on the edge of the car park as featured in Sam's video. I have always regarded Bury as my "second home town" visiting every couple of years or so and really hope that the fans can restore some level of competitive football to Gigg Lane somehow someway, hopefully as one united club. My mum died in 2016 and thankfully never saw the mess that followed at the famous Shakers home in her beloved birthplace...

spot on. there are so many clubs who, despite being bitter rivals, actually have a lot in common. I'm born and bred Wrexham[ that's a different story for another day!] my first away game was to Bury in 1978 and I've always felt an affinity with the club. So many clubs from similar sized towns with a long and proud history are [or have been] at risk from predators, Bury,Oldham,Stockport,Chester and ourselves to name just a few. The people of these towns deserve thriving clubs as vital parts of their respective communities. best wishes to each and every one of you.

I watch Radcliffe as they’re my local club, I can’t afford to take my 3YO to United or City when he’s older so it’s Radcliffe and I don’t mean that as a snobbish lower league hipster type fan, it’s a great day out,the beer flows freely and it’s authentic, we’d love to have you down for a game - currently won 8/10 and top the form table.
As for Bury FC there’s a fair bit of animosity for AFC as it’s argued they went and formed the Phoenix before Bury FC were actually dead therefore putting the final nail in the coffin and scuppering a potential takeover, Bury isn’t big enough to sustain two clubs so hopefully the people who are pro AFC or pro BFC can get their heads together and combine.
Great video and thanks for coming to Bury 🙌.

Look at that Macclesfield programme on BBC and how much being saved meant to the staff and fans, even starting again way down the league pyramid. I went to Bury a lot in the 1980s and got pally with the club secretary, John Heap, who was a smashing fellow but sadly passed away about 20 years ago. I think the big clubs could do more to help out the smaller clubs, possibly play them in a pre-season friendly at home, where all the gate money goes to the smaller club. I am a Walsall fan and we have clashed frequently over the years but I have unfortunately never watched us at Gigg Lane. Like I say I feel so sorry for the Bury supporters who work hard and look forward to Saturday like myself. I hope Gigg Lane remains and I hope the Phoenix club can romp up the leagues and get themselves into Gigg Lane!

Great little documentary. To many clubs are heading the same way and the local impact is devastating. Derby are close to suffering the same as Bury. As a Cov fan I feel heartbroken for these fans as we almost suffered the same fate. Owners should have a passion for the club as well as the sport, not just a way to try and make some cash. Hopefully the club will be back.

@@duncanedwards7840 I was quite young (8 or 9) and hadn't yet become attached to a club. My family lived in Heywood, midway between Bury and Rochdale. My elder brother was a Man City fan but had stopped going as much when we moved from Manchester, preferring to watch the different clubs nearer to home: Bury, Rochdale and Oldham. He took me to watch Bury a couple of times. The next season my elder sister took me to see Rochdale, and I think I was just at the right age to become attached to a club. Over the years I would have seen a lot more success as a Bury fan but, tragically, become as heartbroken as Shaker's supporters must be now.

Preston fan here - we had some epic PNE vs Bury battles in the mid-late 1990s.
Stan Ternent's team got back to back promotions in 1996 and 1997 (both sides went up automatically in 1996) and had some seriously good players - Dean Keily, Chris Lucketti, Paul Butler and Mike Jackson, who we later signed. It's surreal and sort of numbing to think of a football world without them.
Radcliffe Borough have been Conference North/Evostik regulars for years - and speaking of teams called North End have you 'done Glossop' yet? Could be a good video.
