I cite my sources and they may differ than other people's accounts, so I don't guarantee the actual accuracy of my videos.
The LA Times perfectly summarized the band’s outlook on music saying they are and i quote “more likely to chase ideals than the trappings of fame. Hailing from Santa Barbara the band had a pretty drama free family life unlike their contemporaries. They came from white collar backgrounds and the members attended Saint Marco’s high school meeting in drama class before forming in 1986, Their lineup was made of up singer/rhythm guitarist Glen Phillips, guitarist Todd Nichols bassist, Dean Dinning, and drummer Randy Guss . Another alumni of their high school was model kathy ireland. I’ve done a whol video on how punk rocker Henry Rollins was so irritated by kathy ireland got himself banned from the tonight show. Link is in the bio.
The quartet’s name would be influenced by a Monty Python Skit. named "Rock Notes" from their Contractual Obligation Album. The skit would see a newscaster reading news about fictional band names. One of the band names was Toad the Wet Sprocket and by the band’s own admission the name was supposed to be temporary and while the members didn’t seem too crazy about the name, it endured during their entire career.
Eric Idle, who performed the sketch, reflected on the band’s name saying "I once wrote a sketch about rock musicians, and I was trying to think of a name that would be so silly nobody would ever use it, or dream it could ever be used. So I wrote the words 'Toad the Wet Sprocket.' And a few years later, I was driving along the freeway in LA, and a song came on the radio, and the DJ said, 'that was by Toad the Wet Sprocket,' and I nearly drove off the freeway." The band even made rolling stone magazine’s list of worst band names.
Toad the Wet Sprockets influences would include REM, U2 and the Waterboys. They were sometimes labeled a thinking man’s band similar to other 90’s rockers like Live, which I’ve done a pretty extensive video on. The link is down below.
Toad the Wet Sprocket’s first gig would take place in September of 1986 at an open mic talent contest at a local restaurant, which they lost. But that loss would spur the band to improve and play more gigs. By the time the band started gigging around Santa Barbara a lot of other bands were paid in beer but since quartet were below the legal drinking age, according to an interview they did wit hVH1 they were paid in free peanuts and sometimes an occasional frozen burrito.
Much of Toad’s early success was due to friend Brad Nack, Guitarist Todd Nichols would tell the LA Times
“He used to be in a band called The Tan,”“and he came to see us one night He liked us and introduced us to a friend of his, Chris Blake, who was looking for a band to manage. They helped us record the demos that became our first release, ‘Bread & Circus.’ We did the whole thing for $650 at the end of last summer.” Their self produced record was put out on their own label Abe’s Records, but it wasn’t until they began work on their second album Pale that a bidding war between labels happened. MCA was so enthralled with the band they offered them a 1 million advance. The members knew that 1 million was a loan and it would have to be paid back in record sales. They knew they were unproven and likely weren’t going to be able to recoup the advance. Instead they wanted to work their way up gradually and signed a four album deal with Columbia Records. Columbia would re-release Bread and Circus at the band’s request to have no alterations or remixing done on the record.. The band in the meantime finished their second record Pale, which was done on a shoe string budget of about $6,000. Pale would also result in the single Come Back Down which peaked at number 27 on the rock charts in america and the band shot a music video for it which got some airplay on MTV’s show 120 minutes. The minor success with the single wouldn’t result in the labum becoming a hue seller.
The band seemed to be ignor
another fan request off the list, only 500 to go...
ANOTHER 90's BAND WHO WERE A BUNCH OF COMMUNISTS
@@sstaners1234 I think I only sent the one for a short video About budgie and how they influenced A couple of Big time bands like sound garden and mettalica
How about this request: Juliana Hatfield's unreleased album "God’s Foot" and I second the request for the band Budgie...the album covers from them were wild and they influenced Metallica, Maiden etc
@@kikeheebchinkjigaboo6631 It's easy to be that way when you're from ($$$) Santa Barbara and living the "bohemian life" as a musician on the road! They had lots of female fans lining up for autographs.
@@sstaners1234 one day I found black velvet stallion by them and I dozed off to it Thinking My God this is excellent fast forward a couple weeks me and my brother are going down the road and I told em hey you want to hear a good one put on black velvet stallion by budgie and I was more surprised the second listening cause we had the speaker system of the truck those bells were ringing in the intro a lil bit a silence and we just hear and felt the BUM BUM.... BUM BUM we both just kinda glanced over at each other like Thats some nasty low bass
I'm in a Toad tribute band. We're called Frog the Soggy Cog.
Dude, this made my week. :-D
😆
Lol
THIS! IS! FABULOUS!!!!!
That’s actually as sh*t a name as the original! I didn’t think it was possible!
Well done 👍🏻!
Toad is one of the most underappreciated bands of their era. Incredibly tight in their live performance. Most importantly, the most down to earth people you will ever meet.
Agreed. Got to see them several times live in my teens and early twenties. Also got to meet them at one of the performances. One of my top-10 bands of all time.
Absolutely.
Totally agree, I saw them live in 2013… Amazing. Extremely underappreciated.
I agree
Yeah, great band.
I had the unique pleasure of designing the album art for their latest album "starting now" and they're currently on tour again. Glenn and the band are as awesome as you think they are and very humble and genuinely nice people. I'm proud to have worked with them and very happy to see them still creating great new music and bringing it to their fans. Not many bands from the 90's are creating new albums with all original new songs.
Holy moly - I'm glad I saw this! I consider myself a big fan and yet it's 2023 and I didn't even know this album existed... I feel like an ass...
@@grendelbear SAME ❤️
Very cool. 👍
This band is underrated as hell, Dulcinea is a great album so is fear but I like Dulcinea more.
Dulcinea is so good I would almost eat it. I have no other way to describe it. I could listen to that album on repeat for the rest of my life.
Dulcinea is one of the very few albums I've owned where there are no tracks that I ever want to skip. Fly From Heaven came on in a supermarket once and I was shocked - I'd never heard it on the radio.
@@Quintzal it's a deep cut
Dulcinea was released on my 12th birthday. I’ve been jamming it since around that time. Fly From Heaven is my favorite on the album.
+1 for dulcinea being favorite
I saw Toad numerous times back i the 90’s. What always floored me was even though their songs aren’t hard driven ,their performances were so tight and so intense you couldn’t help but be pulled in to their magic.
After 20 years Dulcinia continues to be one of my favorite albums of all time. My musical tastes have taken me from metal to jazz to classical and most recently I've been on a big rap and hiphop bender the past few years, but going back to listen to Dulcinia is like seeing a long lost friend; Still the same old familiar face but yet different through the eyes of experience and maturity.
Lol, it was 28 years old when you wrote your comment
I've seen them live many times- never a disappointment.
Walk on the Ocean is a masterpiece... I love this band.
In 2007 I was walking down 6th Street in Austin, Texas during the SXSW Festival. Bands were playing everywhere, and I was trying to decide which showcase to hit next, when I heard a familiar voice singing from a mostly empty small bar. It was Glen Phillips doing one of his solo tunes with an acoustic guitar. I'd never heard the song, but there was no mistaking his voice. I went in and was one of a handful of people who got to see his fantastic set of new stuff, with a couple Toad songs thrown into the mix. It was such a treat in the middle of a festival where I had been subjected to an endless onslaught of swaggering musicians who were full of more strut than talent. I hope to catch Toad if they come through Memphis again.
A very underrated band and their lyrics and music are poetry. Love them. ❤️
I sure am glad they released “All I Want”. If it hadn’t charted and played a lot on the radio, I might never have heard of them. They quickly ascended to my favorite band of all time, and that continues to this day. I don’t think they’ll ever be topped.
I never understood how bands or managers or producers could hear a song like that and not instantly think it would be a huge hit. Even if they didn't like it the surely had to see that others would
"Fall Down" was also a good song by this band.
Yeah, I loved that song
They have a lot of lesser known songs that are equally great songs! Reminds me of middle school.😞
Hold her down was my favorite song..
"Something's Always Wrong" is another goodie.
Hold on is a great tune also :)
"Something's Always Wrong" is my favorite song by them.
Mine too. Brilliant composition and lyrics.
@@ScarletVoodoo Agreed.
Yes.
Me too!!!
Reminds me of my relationship with an on again off again girlfriend
I really got into this band, this was "The Garage" band. They took their sound with them when they gained some fame and notoriety. They also had that 90s ingredient that everyone else was trying to hard to find. Songs like "Fall Down" and "Hold her down" we're instantly added to play lists. Infectious melodies and grooves couple with lyrics and messaging that were simply too good to ignore.
As I have said before the 90s was THE decade for great music and there will never be another decade that sounds like the 90s, I am so glad however to see a lot of young folks still listening and still grooving to the 90s music. To all of you Millennials, Gens Y and Z, thank you for keeping it alive and going and I wish you all could have been there with us at all the awesome concerts and live performances, I feel so bad that you missed out on some the greatest events there was at the time.
R.I.P to Curt Cobain, Chris Cornell, Layne Staley, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Lisa Lopez Left Eye of TLC, Chester Bennington and so many others that made the 90s the most fun decade ever.
The song "I Will Not Take These Things (For Granted)" is a great piece, as is "Walk On The Ocean".
Yesss! "I will not take these things for granted " is still one of my all-time favorite songs to this day. Most people I know have never heard of it, sadly.
I will not take these things for granted is an absolute masterpiece. One of many beautiful pieces of music Toad recorded.
Their live show were excellent! Great memories! 👍🏻🍻❤️😎
I can't express how much these guys, sponge, and the toadies were an everyday part of my life coming of age. So underrated!
Toad the Wet Sprocket is in my top 5 favourite bands list. They share this list with Pink Floyd, U2, AC/DC and The Tragically Hip. To say that they are underappreciated is an understatement. They penned some of the most meaningful and profound songs I've ever heard. Their music helped to shape many of my perspectives. I'll always treasure them.
Thank you for featuring this band, they're always one of my favorites, and I think Stories I Tell off of Fear is one of the greatest songs ever
That entire album is, to me, almost perfect. That is an awesome song though.
I agree, the album is in its entirety is near perfection. It brings back a lot of fond memories
Prey your gods is one of the best songs I’ve ever heard
The album is a masterpiece
Definitely a perfect album!
I still get chills when I listen to “Nightingale Song”. My god the harmonies Toad had.
One of my favorite bands. It is quite baffling that they're underrated
always had good tunes overall. “Windmills” is an amazing song lyrically and musically, a beautiful song that still holds up
Windmills is my favorite! My best friend put it in a mix tape for me (remember mix tapes?) and it is what got me into them.
Duuude, I love Toad!! Pale is one of my favorite albums ever. Thanks for covering this awesome band!
Chile!!!!!
@@southernloverecords1341 I love that one!! When we were younger, my brother was obsessed with Corporal Brown. He became fascinated with military history and culture because of that one song. Powerful album. "Jam" might just be my favorite single from the band.
Wow! Thanks! I was one of the many who suggested this one. Looking forward to it!
A few weeks ago I pulled out all my Toad CDs to listen to. It actually rekindled my love for them and I discovered they released 2 new singles recently for a forthcoming new release. As this video noted, it always seemed uncool to like them, but over the decades I have run into many aging punks, goths, and metalheads who will be like, "Yea, I actually liked them too!" They would often cite the lyrics as the reason for liking them.
These guys are still putting very high quality material. Everyone who enjoyed their 90s records should give it a listen.
New Constellation is a fantastic album
Toad is still to this day my favorite band of all time and there isn’t a song of theirs I dare skip. They have a magic in each song that possesses it’s own unique secret emotion knitting their fans together like a generational Amish quilt. I was saddened to see them disband after Coil, which I felt was their most mature and best album up until that point, but continued to follow Glen and see him live on every solo album until they reunited. Glenn is BY FAR one of the best singer/songwriters of our generation and doesn’t miss. Their new material showcases their maturity through the years and what is amazing is they haven’t lost it whatsoever and have only aged like fine wine. Unlike many bands of 30 years their music is relevant and unforced and still offering solace. Eternal love for Toad!!!
Yes they’re very earthy
"All I Want" is one of my most favorite songs ever. I'm glad it didn't get cut.
Pale, Fear and Dulcinea are all master pieces. Not a bad song between them. They are an amazing band. Was lucky enough to catch them in concert once and they did not disappoint. I was just listening to them on shuffle yesterday. Under appreciated for sure.
Coil is such a fantastic album!
"Amnesia" is a personal anthem.
It is a great album. And no wonder they took a decade and half hiatus. I have not listened to their comeback album. I should do that!
@@Jay-do2dl New Constellation is a superb record. Highly recommended
@@setaside2 thanks Marc! I surely will listen to it. My fav album btw is Coil
@setaside2 💯 agree, I noticed that each Toad album was incrementally superior to its predecessor through Coil, and if you count the expanded version of New Constellation then that release follows suit.
Their acoustic work is unmatched
"Something's Always Wrong" is a masterpiece.
So is 'All I Want'.
Toad will always be one of my favorite bands. My dad loved them, so i always grew up listening to them. I’ve found that as I get older and go through more experiences, a new song will really stand out and be a ‘life chapter song’. Lyrical geniuses.
Fall Down is a great driving song.
Love this band! My music tastes are "stuck" in the 90s Alternative genre and these guys are one of my favorites! Just saw them in concert Oct 2022.
I've always loved Toad, a very underrated band. I'm going to see them in October!! I can't wait!!
Among the most underrated bands of the 90's. I saw them with Counting Crows and they were great live.
Awesome, under-appreciated band. Tons of great songs. I saw them a couple years ago, they sounded amazing.
Very humble and down to earth group of guys. Probably one of the last bands that just simply kept touring and trying to find ways of putting together music that would come across with a message of some sort, while creating nice melodies and good musical "hooks". Think they were one of the best bands from the 90's or, of any decade really
Seen this band in Toronto in the 90's. I'm from Ireland and feel they never got the recognition that they truly deserved. They should be on the radio more, they were amazingly unique. Thanks for great music toad the wet sprocket.
I saw them in Seattle in 2014. They were really good and sounded great.
At the end of the show, they played "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" by Monty Python on the PA system as everyone was leaving.
they do have a connection to monty python so makes sense
Iron Maiden plays that at the beginning of their songs.
Had a friend that was way into TTWS when we were in college. Wild stuff. Made me appreciate them more.
Just got tickets to see them in NYC in September! My wife and I saw them in Sacramento in the early 90s right after we were married. Toad holds a very special place in my heart.
"all i want" is such a beautiful song
The last few measures break my heart to this day. (In the best possible way.)
the first song I ever learned to play on guitar was "All I Want"
Love TTWS. Still my favorite band after decades
I miss them and will always love the band. I still listen to them today.
Amazing band.
Even their B-Sides compilation album is better than some mainstream ones during their time - and more so with today's records.
"New Constellation" is a fantastic album... It's like the band never really quit. They just spent time rehearsing on the astral plane while living their separate lives on this one. Toad helped me raise my children, Glen's voice providing the backdrop of so many bedtimes... Or mine as I covered their songs on the guitar. I have a lot to thank them for.
Especially the version with the bonus tracks, like Finally Fading.
Fear was my very first CD that I ever bought lolol I remember not being able to wait until it came out. When it did , my mom gave me 20 bucks to go get it and I walked to the record store down the street from my house with the most excitement 🤣
Toad is still one of my favorite bands in life.
Saw them in 2019 with the Mrs. and her friend. I remembered them and was surprised that I knew many more songs than i thought. It feels like they came away with the ultimate success as a band. A consistent catalog of music, and remained fairly anonymous in the public eye, what a great career!
Toad is one of my all time fav bands. Their music is timeless and they put on the best show!!
I cannot pick a favorite song, however Something to Say on Fear is such a beautiful song. And Rings on Coil always resonated with me. The lyrics "and oh the simple pleasures" and "this ring tells of rain, this one summer. Good years, nightmares" still move me after all these years.
One of my top 15 bands. Thank you so much for these stories. Love your channel
thanks
Windmills is my favorite song of all time, such an underrated song
Thankfully they are still creating high quality music with outstanding lyrical content.
I still love their music 🤙
always love to hear cool, new and old rock LIVE!
I had heard one or two of their songs, but had pretty much forgotten about them, until I heard Fall Down on Showtime's Billions, and was intrigued. Took a deep dive into their catalog, and fell in love! Went to see them at the Greek in LA, and they did not disappoint. I'm in the process of collecting as much of their music as I can find.
In Light Syrup is one of my all-time favorite albums!!
Love this band. So good, their B-side/rarities collection may be my favorite.
Thanks for doing this one. I was really into these guys in the 90s in my 20s.
One of my favorite bands. I saw them live twice at the House of Blues, and both times they would come out after the show and hang out with the crowd. Very approachable and down to earth people.
They are still touring in 2023 and better than ever!
Love Toad. They are so under appreciated. They had a great sound and feel.
1. I find it refreshing to hear about a group/individual that does NOT have any controversies surrounding their career.
2. 'Walk on the Ocean' was another popular mid 90's middle/high school slow dance song.
3. Sid, what I like about your channel is that you talk about your stories without worshiping at the altar of musicians like some content creators do (*cough*Eddie Trunk*cough)
thanks, yeah i hate people who worship or give tongue baths to musicians.
Eddie loves to reference a conversation he had with a celeb "backstage/on the phone/over dinner", and he likes stealing other's ideas, imo.
Toad is still one of my fave bands of all time!
I have no words to describe Dulcinea ,I think is the album I have play all of my Life over and over again
I liked some of their tunes. "Somethings Always Wrong" is perhaps my fave.
I just saw them last night. Still touring, still sounding great.
2023. I've seen them 3 times. They're currently on tour now. Awesome band.
Glen Phillips is an incredible songwriter.
One of my favorites! Saw them in 1992 and 2019 - they sounded as great as ever!
I was able to see Glen Phillips in concert before the pandemic and he’s still incredible. Sounds as good as ever.
Just saw them play like 2 years ago. Fantastic band.
TTWS is one of my favorite guilty pleasure bands. Their music always puts me in a good mood.🤙🤙
I've been waiting for you to cover this band. Pale is a true hidden jem of an album! Dulcinea is probably my favorite. Their newest single "Starting Now" is really good, especially if you're a fan of "Somethings Always Wrong"
Same.
Dulcinea is my favorite. Though I’d still put Fear over Pale. Great band.
@@mrp4242 that's fair
"Crazy Life" is in my Top 10 favorite songs ever.
One of the best bands that ever were and still are. Just amazing.
Oh bloody hell. Nuts.
One of the most underrated bands on this planet. See them live and you will become a fan, if not already.
I will not take these things for granted - beautiful, specially the ending solo
Saw them at the Paradise in Boston in '91 or '92... they were doing a co-headlining tour with Innocence Mission. TTWS went on first and came back for multiple encores. They seemed like super genuine and humble guys!
"Stories I Tell" and that b- side on the "All I Want" single "All She Said". Two amazing songs.
Walk On The Ocean is one of my favourite songs to this day. ❤
I love that song too
I loved the first three albums theyre still on my playlist.
When I think of some of the best harmonies of music history I immediately think of Toad the Wet Sprocket
Very talented and great music. Love their music tones and lyrics. Just wish there were some more riffs and jams in their live shows
Great band. Solid catalog of music. Got to open for them when I was playing music back in the day. Dream come true.
My favorite band all time. Their music had so many impacts on my life when I was in my 20’s. Just wish Glen had not mixed his wonderful music with politics at times.
Saw them a few years ago in Reading Pennsylvania at a free concert with Rusted Root. I knew their radio hits but when I looked them up again to see how much more I knew I couldn't believe how much I liked the songs by them I never heard on the radio. It was a great show and hope they come back to my area again.
Toad.... I love them!! Gloriously underestimated. So much so that when you turn it on for a get together at least 1 enlightened soul will request the bands name. It really sticks even now. The sound, the feel and I adore the atmosphere I can create py pushing play... inspiring and refreshing add in relatable, that is a recipe for wonderment. I wanted create a space in my bedroom that was warm and cozy, cleared the whole of it out and proceeded to make a play list. Toad TWS claimed much of the list. I "dry" brushed my room and it was magic!!
Windmills.... 1 of my favorite tunes by them. New album is materful!! It's too soulful for rock and its too smart for soft rock lol... when it doesn't fit in a tiny box... it will always withstand the test of time. I don't like Elvis but, put on some neil diamond we good.
Toad’s dark stuff was everything. So good. Only the true fans
Like corporal brown
One of my favorite bands in college
Completely off topic here. I consider my mental health not robust enough for social media but I feel safe here. Thanks to everyone involved and have a great day.
You are probably quite the opposite. If you have the self awareness to stay away from the cesspool that is social media, you are quite alright. I don't go near it either.
Humorous to me that people make an imaginary distinction between talking to strangers on youtube and doing it on fb or twitter. . .but whatever gets you through the day. . .I ain't mad atcha
Really? Alot of times reading youtube comments makes me lose the little bit of faith in humanity and society and makes me sooo scared and worried for the kind of society my son is gonna have as he gets older. Yea its just words so no im not gonna off myself or be personally hurt by any of it. Just i realize that there are alot of dumb shits out there. Oh and dont get me started on youtube tik tok thing. The videos themselves are second hand embarassing then alot of the comments you realize how screwed as a species or a society we are. And i do facebook well i have one which i just use to post pics of my son or whine about something in my life at like 3 am if i am messed up on xanax lol. No twitter or anything. So i am glad you find a channel on youtube with a comment section you are able to deal with or somewhat enjoy
@@ryanchoke Good point. But I think comments on YT are more random, its not a huge part of someone's life. At least for me...I comment here and there mainly to help out the algorithm, and thats about it. But - point well taken.

Im a big fan of toad the wet sprocket..i still love these guys..nice tune..nice melody
Thank you for this video!!! I'm only familiar with All I Want but that song has been a staple for my playlists. It was nice to see a video exploring this band and has now made me want to explore their work further! 💜
In 1989, I won a cassette version of Bread & Circus from my college radio station. I had never heard of them but I grew to like the album. A few years later, I got Fear, and it became one of my favorite albums of that year. Got to see them that year and they were great. I always thought they were unfairly overlooked compared to the other 90s bands.
I’ve loved this band since 1990!! Saw them live at the Lisner Auditorium at George Washington Univ back when I was 21!! Glen Phillips is an AMAZING song creator and his solo shows…. It kinda feels like sitting in your living room with a bunch of friends!! I think my favorite song of his is Easier….
I live in Santa Barbara and have been a fan of Toad since they started out in the late 80’s. Haven’t seen them play live in a long time, but I went to almost all their shows around town during my senior year of college. I remember them as a group of really nice guys who loved playing together and really respected each other.
In case nobody has told you..Your work is impeccable.
