  • Dale and Shane Barks from Discovery Channel's "Sons of Winter" are back on the trapline and chasing after fur again this year. We show off some of our favourite basic ingredients for making an effective Marten/Fisher call lure, all for under $15. Keep in mind that this is based on our own personal preferences and experiences in the Boreal forest environment, and results may vary depending on geographic location. We just enjoy sharing some of our own tips and tricks as we learn more ourselves.

I have used these same ingredients successfully for decades. Marten eat lots of berries in summer, they like sweets, so I also make a a mix of jam ,anise, fish oil, castor with glycol antifreeze or Vaseline that I put on the trap bait. It keeps their focus on the bait And your
mix with skunk goes outside the box as a long distance call.

Richard Popko I've never heard of jam before! That's a great idea! We use this entire lure as a call lure outside the box; the only type inside the box we've ever done is pure anise on a q-tip.

Was curious of what is the beaver castor exactly?

J C Great question! The beaver castors are the large scent glands under the tail of the beaver. On a big mature, they can each be half the size of my fist. They're different than the oil sacks though; the oil sacks are smaller and connected to the castors. The castors are what produces the scent that you smell around beaver houses sometimes.

If you watch carefully in the intro of the two newest videos (Welcome to the North and Quill em and Grill em) where I skin the beaver, the castors are the last thing I cut out. It's tough to see because of the speed of the video, but you might catch a glimpse of them there.
