@@romansilverwolf6422 SAME. Elder Scrolls games are a million times better when you do!
I always give my characters bg story-based nerfs and limits - for instance, they can only learn one base-level fire or healing spell because of an aversion to magic and hate high elves because their family were murdered by them etc - and it gives SO much more to the game and helps combat some of the op/broken mechanics.
I once, for kicks, made a khajiit who was both allergic to and terrified of wolves and werewolves. Like- blindly throw a fireball and run the other way level terrified. It made sauntering through the woods (the closest I ever get to fast travel is using the horse carts if my destination is literally at the other side of the map, because immersion) way more interesting and complicated from the very first day. When you have to be constantly on the lookout for, then backtrack, hide and find an alternate route just because of the ubiquity of the first-available enemy, it adds so much more life, impact, immersion and personalization to the game.

This is not an unreasonable thing to say. For a very long time the monk class was not viable. Under 5e it is viable, but not every subclass. The issue stubbornly persists. And its not a simple issue either as one subclass (long death) is much more powerful at low levels. Some subclasses (not just of monk) are situational. For example, a gloomstalker ranger is a wise choice...for the Underdark. It is a terrible choice for the desserts of calishem. Beastmaster, original rules...HORRIBLE. Under new rules, pretty good.
Minmax is an ignorant term. The correct term is viable vs not viable. Wizard with a maxed out intelligence score...viable. Wizard with the bare minimum of 13 to enable the class. Not viable. I mean what I say. You are just wasting everyones time if you can't actually cast anything and have a reasonable chance of the saving throw working.
This extends to play. A wizard, just as an example, who attacks a weakness is effective but the same wizard with the same spells who is too stupid to do this is ineffective. I once held a troll, for example (low wisdom score) nearly helpless with tashas laughter while my party demolished what it normally could not handle. If I did that on a NPC cleric...I am just wasting a spell slot.
Playing my cleric, often the most devastating spell I can cast is the humble Bless. Why. High AC. You understand? The monk class, often lacks synergy. It's a weak fighter variant.

To quote Alfred here, “some men don’t want anything master Wayne. Some men just want to watch the world burn.”
I hate to say this, but I’ve seen it happen. Knew a guy once, used to be a friend. Used to be. I was his first dm.
Tried to teach him to play with the group, work together build back story. That it’s a collaborative game and the point is for *everyone* at the table to have fun.
His idea of fun was kill the party. Every session.
      For two years.
Every session was the same: he’d roll in. New character, meet the party, and then spend the rest of the session trying to stab people in the back or sell them out to their enemies or set off as many traps as possible. Inevitably, the party would turn on him and kill him. Next session he’d make a new character and try again.
It wasn’t just one group of people he’d do this with: I dm at an adventure league and there were at the height of it 50+ people there as adventurers. By the end of the first half of the year every person there had a character he had gotten killed and had one of his characters killed. He’d then go on to message people who killed him threats about what he would do to them next week.
Eventually, he found some players who he could bully around, and every game he would kill their characters off, then convince them to play with him in another group and promise he wouldn’t do that again when they got upset. That was a lie and the cycle would start all over again.
I tried everything I could think of to change: I tried talking to him, offering rewards if he worked with the party, tried killing his characters off, tried making his characters ineffective at killing party members, tried dropping him in level every time he attempted to slit someone’s throat. Everything.
      Nothing worked.
Eventually, people just stopped wanting to play with him. His actions started to go from just at the table to harassing them online. He got banded from the shop adventure league was played at, and eventually got permanently banned after making some really crappy anti-trans joke to a trans player in the league group chat, then bizarrely went on a rant to a colleague of mine that is Jewish about how his grandfather was a Nazi and how they should be allowed to do what they want. What’s bizarre about that wasn’t that he was anti-trans or pro-Nazi: he said all of that just to piss them off.
If you haven’t figured it out yet, this person was mentally unwell. His whole enjoyment he got out of everything was in upsetting others. I tried everything I could to get him to see all that was going to do was get him isolated and alone, and that none of it was ok. He didn’t want to hear any of it, and now last I heard he doesn’t play at all anymore, he mostly just sits alone.

You dm for 20 years you get a few horror stories) this guy... well, I saw the mental disorder, and I tried to help him. And all of my dealing with him were colored with “this person has an illness and cannot help himself.” So when he’d start acting up I tend to try offering mercy and I tried reaching out to help him. I’m a firm believer people can change and no one is inherently bad, but after that last two years I can’t help but realize there are people who won’t listen. In this guy’s head it was everyone else’s problem, not his.
And while some of my players have aren’t perfect souls (lord knows I’m not) the rest of them work things out and are reasonable. In an odd way, ever since he got banished the other players have become much more open to talking things out out of game with each other.
However, after this I do take a more assertive and proactive approach. I firmly bring up that if your idea of fun is at someone else’s expense here you need to leave and come back when you change your mind. I run games from time to time that is cutthroat in the way this guy wanted but I establish early on whether that is going to be allowed or not, and only if they sign a contract. Breaking contract means I don’t need to put up with you any more and also ensures everyone agrees to play the way intended or find another dm.

Not neccesarily but he might have played before witha group that prefers treating D&D as tactical game, not that those groups don't roleplay sometimes they roleplay better than some roleplayign groups i played with, but the main thing they expect and are ready for is how to get through whatever challenges DM throw at them, that of course isnt always combat sometimes its traps and sometimes its riddles or schemes, think less typical adventurer shit more Darkest Dungeon but with actual interaction between characters and npcs, but its is always on basis of what your character can do and what it cant do, to varying degrees of stricktness.
People from such groups especially if they only played a few games before, as in didnt get to the good parts form perspective of roleplaying and only the parts of crunch numbers and use brain and contents of your character sheet to work the problem, will ususally be completely useless or bored, or as in case of Larry, disruptive, confused and angry if not handled right, which places this catastrophe of roleplaying seesion in the blame bin of the DM, not entirely mind u as he coudl have asked before hand what will be expected during the game, but still.

Reminds me of a story where our party's warlock managed to defuse a boss encounter and the boss herself, almost entirely solo.
The party consists of a wizard, a ranger (me, I used the revised version), a barbarian and the warlock, Uder.
The rest of the group aside from Uder provided support, but didn't really do much that needs elaboration. Uder was a Pact of the Chain warlock following a Celestial patron (think "biblical angel purges the unholy" type deal). He pretended to be a priest of Pelor, for obvious reasons.
A bit of background: the party had been doing an important mission for the crown prince (king went nutty some time ago, so the title isn't transferred), and had been occasionally harassed by agents of the princess. The princess really disliked the prince, due to a heavy disagreement on a lot of policies; by "really disliked", I mean "attemped to assassinate him on a yearly basis". The party, working for the prince, naturally got a similar "disliking" treatment.
Anyway, having finished up the quest, and being just about to deliver the sword we were retrieving back to the prince, Uder scouted ahead with his familiar as he usually does and discovered the princess alongside two or three ogres. The princess didn't know Uder, due to him being a new-ish member and not as active as the others, so he went in alone to distract her while the rest of the party circled around and went into the town proper. He managed to hit it off decently well, and more or less befriended her.
The party wizard did some divination magic, and we combined that with our current knowledge of the situation to come to the *wildly* incorrect conclusion that we shouldn't give the sword off to the prince immediately, cause he might be evil. So, we had Uder help to set up a meeting with the princess, and explain our situation. After a talk with the princess we agreed to stop trying to murder each other, and that the prince probably wasn't evil so we should give the sword to him and work from there. We turned it in and leveled up shortly after (can't remember if it was from mission completion itself or an encounter a bit afterwards).
We got a new mission to go to a new place, and as we traveled Uder started taking advantage of his new Dream spell. First, he entered into the princess' dream, and comboed Dream with Disguise Self to pose as Pelor, and convince the princess to agree to a discussion. He then went into the prince's dream and did the same, posing as the princess. It's worth noting at this point that Uder had left his familiar behind to make negotiations doable, and to function as a phone to keep the prince updated on mission status.
With that in mind, Uder managed to handle the negotiation flawlessly (the rest of the party linked in with a telepathy spell to provide advice), managing to set up the prince and princess as handling separate parts of the political situation. The princess would manage an important military position from the front line, being the combat-minded sort, while the prince handles economy and logistics, being better with politics and the like.
We found out later from the GM that she was just supposed to be a boss fight, but like most of the boss fights we dealt with in that campaign we managed to succeed entirely from left field. Uder's player left at a later date for scheduling reasons, and the in-character justification given was that he needed to do some religious work to atone for impersonating his god.

This is like the third time I've heard this story on various RPG horror story channels, but its such a masterstroke of roleplaying that I listen to it all the way through every time anyways. Also, "it's not real fantasy unless it has dragons" is still the cringiest thing I've ever heard in regards to TTRPG. Especially since it was in response to Journey to the West which absolutely has dragons! Ugh, what a moron.

I always am kinda turned away by players who focus solely on the effectiveness of a character. Not saying I hate anyone who does it, it's just annoying when people can complain about how your character isn't effective when your not going for effectiveness.

    • @tcrpgfan
      @tcrpgfan 2 роки тому +2

There's different ways for a character to actually BE effective. Mii is an example of that. She was basically able to infiltrate an enemy base and make off with everything that the group needed to utterly annihilate the antagonists through nothing but espionage.

Larry never learned that you get XP from *passing* (pass/fail) an encounter. You don’t have to kill the Dragon, you can sneak past it, gain it’s permission to pass, blow it away with tales of your legendary tales of legendary-ness that it swears fealty!
“Imma stab it in the face” isn’t the only answer!
