This is exactly what I have been looking for. I already have a hard time making trees for dioramas that I didn't want to bother with trees that can handle gaming. This is the perfect alternative!

I had the same revelation with the trees getting in the way of play. I carved mine out of XPS foam to a similar size, shape as your resin trunks (yours look far more realistic). I opted for a stump look at the top for mine. Aside from smaller Christmas village type evergreen trees and a few stands/clumps of full railroad trees, the stumps are my go-to trees. I also made huge 3x3 tree trunks for huge redwoods out of some blocks of styrofoam. They are also only like 4” high or so. Together with some based up lichen for scatter bushes it gives a good forest-y feel. 😁

Awesome! I want to make some giant trees too. I think I will make a full tree again in the future when the tree itself is the focal point.

@@TableCraftOfficial cool can’t wait to see the video for that (or at least a cameo in an end montage). Also another advantage of the pillar trees is that you can potentially add on a removable elven flet on top of them. Haven’t done that yet but have been mighty tempted. 😁

I think you made a good choice. You're right. Your final tree designs looks much better than your original attempt. Thanks for letting us learn along with you.

That has ever been a catch-22 of the to-scale building community; trees are much bigger, in reality, than is convenient for gaming or dioramas. A pine, realistically scaled to a 28mm figure, would be about 30" tall. I really like that you were able to roll with it, and end up with 2 entire sets. Nice! Really enjoyed this, both for the build, and for the look at what can really happen, in this hobby. Good stuff

Thank you so much! I really enjoy making and using practical terrain in my gaming sessions, but I also use theater of the mind a lot. These trees combine the two.

Absolutely love it. Implying trees makes much more sense from a gameplay standpoint (and they're much more easy to store). An idea that I got while watching was to make the trees modular by adding magnets or small holes at the "stumpy" top. That way, one could add the rest of the tree when the encounter/scene calls for a more finished tree. Big and special trees can still be made as standalone pieces though.
I will craft these stumpy trees for my tabletop because I like easy, usable and modular terrain.

They have been great! I saw another crafter on UA-cam do the modular tree with magnets and was like, “duh” why didn’t I think of that?! I might do some on the future. But honestly, storing wise, and just having them out of the way has been invaluable.

I was going to suggest coating the Sage Brush in something, either mod podge or a matte medium. I bought a Super Trees kit and they suggest dipping them in a matte medium to re-hydrate them and to strengthen them. But you suggested that yourself in the video. By the way, for my trees, I don't ever put a canopy on them as it would get in the way of play, players would knock the trees over when moving their minis, it blocks the view of the combat, etc.

Sounds like we’re on the same page! Though I always think about it looking really good too and the canopy accomplishes this. I think I’ll see about making my own version of RP Archives modular trees. He did an excellent job!

Great video! I think some scrub oak would have held up better than the sage brush. And it does not stink as much.

Yeah I thought the same thing. But finding dead scrub oak wasn’t as easy.
