All negativity must stop. Open your ears, and you might hear magic. Open your eyes and you will see passion. Even at this late stage in his life, he out shines so many "Great," Tenors! Bravo Pipo Bravo!
This night was not his night. Every tenor has bad days. This concert was that day for pipo. Even he is not in his prime and this is not his night, his voice is miracle. His diction is perfect. His passion is beyoung mesure. People loved him and his stage presence. He is God amound tenors. He is not voice whit a men. He is man whit a voice. Be enjoyed life and he live whit full open lungs. He is best lyric tenor ever!!!!
Di Stefano was the greatest young and old, and most of all he knew how to live, sang with his heart and guts and after went got 2-3 girls and went to have a BALL, he did it and sure up-there if he is reading this, he will say E VERO !!!
wonderful !!!!!!! many singers wish to sing like this at that age !!!!!, very powerfull, an sang from the heart. thats the result when you sing with your heart and love music.
I, too, once arrogantly proclaimed to be a fan of "early Di Stefano." Now, having come to my senses, I recognize that even in 1974 this great tenor produced a sound that was exciting, virile, beautiful, and unique, to say nothing of his artistry. God knows if this Di Stefano of 1974 were around today, most of the Met's current crop of tenors would have to quit singing and take up jobs sucking fartholes out of train seats.
ArtMah, yours was a very fair comment about a larger than life character named Di Stefano. It is well known that he sang from the heart without regard to proper technique earlier in his wonderful career. If he had he would have sung a few years longer at a higher level. So what? For 10 or so years, especially with Callas, he thrilled the world. In this song he did lose support but it still was beautiful. Riposa in pace Giuseppe.
What a great artist!!!he does not respect tempo, maybe some people can say that he sang too open (aperto), but who cares if he can sing with that passion, sweetness, and that beauty of sound...
Pavarotti once said that Di Stefano was his favorite singer, that his voice was like sunshine.Who better than Luciano to know?He also commented that his voice was like Di Stefanos,at least in the same path although everybody has their own style.
Agree! A conductor once asked him whether he knows how to cover or not. He responded by singing a covered F# and saying that he knows how to do it but doesn't want to. :)
Pippo is what all singers and artists wish they could be. And that is sincere! So it does not surprise me that so many react to his performances with jealousy. Check out my recording of this aria. I love comments.
Even at this late a date with the right retraining in using his passaggio and cover properly, he could have salved a few memorable years on the art song and concert circuit.
Quite sad and painful to watch this. Di Stefano was at his best in his late 20s through his mid 30s. Sadly, in his 40s, the age when most tenors would have been in their prime, di Stefano's voice had already begun to destroy itself. Overpushing the high notes took its toll.
He is a lovely singer and sings with real sincerity. But I suspect that he sang stronger earlier in his carrier. He seemed to loose a little support at various points throughout the song. The song is very challenging to sing and takes sustained support throughout.
What the lesson really is all about is this: Singers, especially MEN, need to know how to COVER!!! Di Stefano did not do this! U can clearly see & hear it on this performance! Notes that should've been covered were screamed out or just blasted out! Since Di Stefano was blessed w/a god given voice, he got away w/this in his youth. Many great tenors cover but the 1 I will use as a great example(because of his longevity)is Jan Peerce. Listen to his Dalla sua pace. Next note/lyric is "LA" & covered!
lastofdmelocchians musical theatre people sing uncovered all the time, and with a much more scream-like sound... His voice seems in not so bad condition...he just smoked and partied way too much

I agree 100% your idea. He was born tenor. Salut!

che dizione fenomenale (non dico pronuncia), che canto sfogato sulla parola,CHE EMOZIONE.......
I'd rather listened to a Pippo in ragged voice than any current tenor. Bravo and RIP.

Exactly!!!
He still had a beatiful vocal timbre here.

Great ! If only there were voices like this now, such confidence in his art !

Holy *****. Check out 2:55. He uncovers the LA intentionally !!
sounds like it's transposed down a half step....that or the video playback is making it sound a 1/2 step low

il TEMPERAMENTO C'è, ma il canto è deficitario e la romanza è stata abbassata di almeno mezzo tono...è l'ombra del grande Di Stefano...saluti
