Yep and it was him trying to save his cousin Wolfram von Richthofen that started him on the path to his death. Wilfred May was firing on Manfred's cousin when the Baron dove down and fired on May's plane to aid his cousin. When May started to run Manfred began to chase. Cpt. "Roy" Brown saw this and dove to aid his friend May. Fired on Richthofen's plane causing him to jink to avoid the attack, but instead of turning to face his new attacker Richthofen instead broke his own rules of air combat and went back to chasing May. This was the last mistake and shortly after he was shot down and killed.

    Fun Fact (copied from Wikipedia).
The title Monty Python's Flying Circus was partly the result of the group's reputation at the BBC. Michael Mills, the BBC's Head of Comedy, wanted their name to include the word "circus" because the BBC referred to the six members wandering around the building as a circus, in particular, "Baron Von Took's Circus", after Barry Took, who had brought them to the BBC.[5] The group added "flying" to make it sound less like an actual circus and more like something from World War I. The group was coming up with their name at a time when the 1966 Royal Guardsmen song Snoopy vs. the Red Baron had been at a peak. Freiherr Manfred von Richthofen, the World War I German flying ace known as The Red Baron, commanded the Jagdgeschwader 1 squadron of planes known as "The Flying Circus."
The words "Monty Python" were added because they claimed it sounded like a really bad theatrical agent, the sort of person who would have brought them together, with John Cleese suggesting "Python" as something slimy and slithery, and Eric Idle suggesting "Monty". They later explained that the name Monty "...made us laugh because Monty to us means Lord Montgomery, our great general of the Second World War"

A lot of the pilots during this time were from the aristocracy of Europe. For this reason, they had great respect for each other as gentlemen and were even related in some way to some on the other side of the lines. The bodies of those shot down were treated respectfully. Though feared, the Red Baron was also highly respected as a gentleman and an aerial ace. For this reason, he was given a funeral with full military honors by the Allies who were his enemies and friends. A wreath was presented at his burial that read “To Our Galant and Worthy Foe.” Thanks for the video guys.

The propaganda that they fight for a country when in realilty you all fight for your leaders. Back in the days atleast the leaders joined the battlefield and did not let millions of people die when they sat safe smoking cigarrs. In the old they did fight for what was right or wrong, today you all just fight for peopel wh owant more power and greed. Thats all there is to it. Great reaction. The video was from the very good movie Red Baron which was a german movie. I loved the fight scenes in it. BTW, they had parachutes then and the germans used them because they valued their pilots, but the allies didn't because the planes "cost money" (sound familiar?). They had plenty of pilots and they were afraid that their pilots would bail out prematurely. Werner Voss is his buddy in the movie too and he was killed when he took on about 7 british planes for about 15 minutes before getting killed. He had a chance to run too. Back then you could burn to death going down or jump out. At least you weren't in the trenches with poison gas and flamethrowers. WHEW!

It still blows my mind that Richthofen shot down 80, in what amounts to wood/cloth deathtrap (by today's standards anyway) in an era where the airplane was barely even invented. I mean, heck they had just barely figured out how to make a mg fire without destroying your own propeller, and then here comes this dude out of nowhere that gets like 8x times the kills required to become an ace (by WWII standards at least). Its no wonder the 'Red Baron' is THE legendary fighter ace bar none. Unfortunately most Americans only know the name thanks to a frozen pizza......

    • @reecedignan8365
      @reecedignan8365 3 роки тому +3

20x the number (5 confirmed kills = Ace)
Tho there are some interesting facts to the Baron:
      - all 80 kills in which the Baron registered have been confirmed. Their are no “maybe” kills.
      - while it is said that Richthofen would never aim for the pilot, this is false. By his own words he always aimed for the pilots during air battles as it was the best way to confirm kills.
      - if he or his squadron shot down an allied pilots that survived or took any prisoner after the battle he would actually sit and have dinner with them.
      - he collected a trophy from every air victory he had (this included one allied planes front engine part which he hung from the ceiling and used as a type of chandelier)
      - Richthofen cousin Wolfram also served with him during WW1 and learned a lot from him. He would later go onto command and help design much of Germany’s aircraft during WW2.
      - another “notable” addition to rictophens squadron was a young Hermann Göring.
      - it is believed that Canadian pilot Arthur “Roy” Brown was the pilot to finally claim the Red Barons life. However, modern evidence points more in the direction that it was Anti-Air fire that finally claimed the Barons life (a rule in which he broke protecting his cousin - Richthofen rule was to never stay over enemy lines for too long or stick to close to the ground for such reasons)
      - During his death, Richthofen managed to keep full control of his plane the entire time, landing it close to the Australian Imperial Force lines.
PS. Also a small note from historians to the Canadians:
Please stop kill stealing all the “notable” German Aces of the World Wars.
      Richthofen and Witmann.
Tho I will say hah, you never got the top tank Ace Kurt Knipsel - he was killed with his crew on the eastern front.

Pilots early in WW1 even threw bricks and stones at each other if they had nothing else or their pistols ran out. Curious story - the last "dogfight" of WW2 was between a Storch and a Piper Cub (unarmed observation planes) - pilots using pistols! The Storch landed heavily and surrendered.... "At 90 degrees bank, all the lift slides off the wings!".... Brits called German observation balloons "sausages". They need to carry written permission to carry "Buckingham", phosphorous incendiary bullets, to shoot balloons because, if captured, they could be shot for using "a weapon of torture". Brits also used Triplanes - Sopwiths - before Germany! Check out "Black Flight" Royal Naval Air Service. Richtofen, who was a failed cavalry officer, flew despite a serious head wound - years later, Saburo Sakai, Japanese ace, did the same thing.

The allies in the lyric is a bit misleading. Both sides in the first world was allied. I perfer calling them the triple entente and the central powers.

As always, I enjoyed your reactions. Although I like Sabaton, for me this song isn't anything special & not even close to their best ones.
P.S. Fighting the enemy successfully from/in the air took both talent & courage during WW1. Nowadays one can sit comfortably in a bunker thousands of miles away from the enemy & fly a drone to kill him. Where's the courage in that?

    Manfred von Richthofen: 80 kills
    Erich Hartmann: 352 kills
No shade towards Manfred, but I find this slightly more impressive.

I think you forgot that Manfred Fought in ww1 were Planes were a new Technology that was in Testing
Hartmann Fought in WW2 were Planes was far better
