Hello! I am Greek it sounds like you know the basics of this song now, but I will give you some personal flair. Thank you for being interested in our history. It is the greatest honor you can give to a Greek and make them love you LOL!
Here in Greece (Hellas, in our language) I've always been told we have a curse. We have been defending our lands for around 1,000s of years. We were enslaved and geocided by the Ottoman Empire (Turkish) for 400 years, with small wars before and after. So in 1821, we have our independence war from the Ottomans, just like this music it was a war with the cards stacked against us, but we united the countries around us, and even places like Egypt to overthrow them. There is also the Balkan wars in which we try to push out the Ottomans father and take back our homeland.
Fast forward 50~ years, we are in WWII we are barely a country, we haven't built up at all, we just have the "Spirt of the Spartans" and God going for us, The Axis invades us (mainly Italy and Albania) the country that just got its independence and is just growing. Imagine your parents telling you, ANNOYING you, how they your grandparents your great-grandparents have fought so hard for you to live in your own country. Then you get invaded. Its your turn for the curse. EVERYONE fought. Eventually the whole Germany Nazi party must come through to Hellas to put us down, Halting their entire campaign for 2 months~, giving time for the Russians to fully prepare.
(One of the toughest battles in the war has happened in the "731 hill" it was named after it's height 731 meters, it was in a strategic point of great importance and it has been a primary target for Italian offensive since the beginning. The Greek officer who was appointed for it's defence Lt D. Kaslas had given only one order. "No one moves from his position ,the enemy will only pass if even the last one of us fall". The hill was crumbled by Italian airforce and artillery for more than 6 days.... after the war the height of the hill was measured 726... 5 meters shorter was the result of fierce bombardment... the enemy never passed the line...)
(Greece was the only country whose captured soldiers didn't go to Germany to work in labour camps during WWII because after Germany conquered Greece the resistance continued in such a large scale that the German government was afraid that if they did bring Greeks they would create a large scale revolution inside Germany)
    Adolf Hitler:
"For the sake of historical truth I must verify that only the Greeks, of all the adversaries who confronted us, fought with bold courage and highest disregard of death.. " (From speech he delivered to Reichstag on 4 May 1941)
    -
    Wiston Churchhill:
"Hence, we will not say that Greeks fight like heroes, but that heroes fight like Greeks.”
    -
    Georgy Zhoucov:
"If the Russian people managed to raise resistance at the doors of Moscow, to halt and reverse the German torrent, they owe it to the Greek People, who delayed the German divisions during the time they could bring us to our knees.
    -
"Hand over your arms - Xerxes I
Molon Labe! (Come take them!) - King Leonidas
    --
Surrender your city to me by the name of Allah" - Mehmed II
"To surrender the city to you is beyond my authority or anyone else's who lives in it, for all of us, after taking the mutual decision, shall die of our own free will without trying to save our lives" - Constantine XI
    --
"Greece must allow Italian forces to occupy strategic locations in northwestern Greece along the border with Albania or else Italy would invade and occupy them" - Benito Mussolini
"Then it is war!" - Ioannis Metaxas
    -
Philip of Macedonia in a message to Sparta: "You are advised to submit loyalty to me without delay, for IF I bring my army into your land, I will destroy your farms, slay your people and raze your cities."
    Sparta's reply: "If."
We have defended Western civilization since men could write, we have never surrendered, it truly isn't in our blood. Ελευθερία ή θάνατος! (Freedom or death!) Ζητώ η Ελλαδα! (Long live Hellas!)

The victory of Greece over Italy was the first (on land) victory of the Allied forces and it boosted the moral of the Allies. Until then they thought that the axis forces were unstoppable and could not be defeated. The "tiny" Greece showed to the world that this is not true. It is a real David against Goliath story.

An invasion where the fascists of avant-garde air force and weaponry, while by far outnumbering the enemy, got demeaned by a bunch of shabby shepherds and agricultures, who had far less and obsolete equipment. How did this happen? Well, the defenders' will to protect their families and homeland was much stronger than the conqueror's will to dominate. Shows how the spirit and mind can stand superior to numbers and technological advancements.

@@StergiosMekras Greeks were not Romans longer than Italians... where the f* people get that stupid idea? Greeks had their own Culture way before Romans even developed one, starting in neolithic age and throughout bronze age Romans were a culure that emerged primarily during Iron age. At a point past Classical period when city states got united into one empire by Alexander as well he conquered Egypt, Persia and reached almost up to India and Afganistan before he died Hellenistic age happened where his empire got divided into big kingdoms by his generals dynasties.
Then when they more weakened and Rome emerged conquered all of them but in return that contact they came with a more developed culture affected them by becoming culturaly infatuated with Greece to the point of rich people having their kids learn Greek so they can study Greek written works as well adopting Greek arts and even Greek gods.
Later Byzanz happened when Roman emperor Constantine decided move capital from Rome to a new city he build namely Constantinople to break up corruption, so Roman empire got divided later to west and east (with Greece being part of eastern.
Then Turks conquered Byzanz and after roughly 400 years occupation Greek revolted andgot free during 19th century Then at a time at 1940 Mussolini wanted bully Greece into becoming a protectorate sorta as well give Italy free pass Greek dictator at the time was Metaxas who basicaly refused that ultimatum knowing full well he would be kicked from power very fast by Greeks if he accepted. Greeks who were kinda divided in their pro regime and anti regime sides united in face of war and fought in north west Greece and Albanian ground kicking Italian asses until Germans mixed in it.
P.S. Granted there were Greek colonies all over Italian peninsula both Athenean and Spartan ones and Peloponnesian war between both city-states spilled over there during Classical era but Rome per se was never a Greek colony.

@@v3tReacts and when he says Leonidas images doesnt exaggerate... from a documentary i 've watched...the start was nasty af...there was a place called hillock 731 that cost Italians heavily during operation Primavera because Greeks had machine guns placed and the Greek commander there a colonel named Koslas had been a vet of Asia Minor campaign who had been caught imprisoned tortured and starved by Turks as P.O.W and had been almost blind from hunger when he had made it back... so in this fight he had issued a command that nobody retreats and if anyone turns his back on enemy will be shot. First day they stopped 5 attacks and kept so high the carnage that Italians had started break badly even though Mussolini was on a hill on the other side and kept throwing them platoons on them 5 days later they had been kinda bewildered that they had not taken an inch of ground while had so many losses. Basically some surviving vets said among others that the machinegun barells were glowing red from overheating and had to remove them and piss on them to cool them before reseting them and also that it looked like the Italian generals were more ... the desk job type or the parlor type and not seen action much and also that Italian troops were kinda untrained it seemed in close quarter combat with bayonets so when it came to it and they they came close they were not much use and suffered a lot more losses as well many broke up and surrendered crying for mercy to the point they had 2000 Italians surrender on 1 day. Also when some Brittish planes showed up and started hit Mussolini's observation point he had to scatter for a bunker. Later Italians called the gorge next to 731 Gorge of Death

The Greco-Italian war opposed Italy and Greece from the 28th of October 1940 until the 23rd of April 1941. The campaign’s objective was to establish a Greek puppet state which would allow the Italian annexation of the Ionian, Sporades and the Cyclades islands. On the 28th of October, the Italian forces invaded Greece in several columns coming from Albania. On the 3rd November, the Italian spearhead was surrounded from all sides and reinforcements were unable to reach the cut-off Italian forces. The Italian defeat was followed by the Greek counter offensive which ended on the 6th of April 1941 was called the first “first axis setback of the entire war” by Mark Mazower. After reinforcing the front to 28 divisions, the Italians conducted a spring offensive in 1941 which also failed. During the Battle of Greece, Greek and British forces in northern Greece were overwhelmed by the Germans, which advanced rapidly into Greece. The Italian army suffered more than 154’000 casualties and the Greek army suffered about 90’000 losses.
