- Indonesia is hosting the annual Super Garuda Shield military exercises, with participating countries including the U.S., Japan, Australia, South Korea, India, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Canada. Our guests, Tony Hu and Brian Hioe, explain its significance.
Super Garuda Shield initially bilateral exercise betwen Indonesia and the US. But in the past 10 years became larger as a clear statement of security and defense cooperation to maintain stability within Indo-Pacific.
This year Super Garuda Shield is participated by 10 countries such as: Indonesia, US, Singapore, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Canada, France, UK, and New Zealand.
And 12 other countries as observer, such as: Netherland, German, India, Brazil, UAE, Philippine, Thailand, Malaysia, Brunei Darusallam, Timor Leste, Papua New Guinea and Tuvalu.
There's a reason why Indonesia was never mentioned geopolitically.....because it's a no-problem, stable country. Of course, every country has problem, but relatively stable and not worth mentioning, according to international media.

well in terms of political stability i agree, Indonesia is the type of country where you can find both anti clerical-pro tolerance and anti-authoritarian-pro moralist agree that communist's atheistic beliefs are disgusting, while you can find in the same neighborhood a devoted-peace loving religious person living side by side with a pro secularist-militarist,who hate religious radicalism.

As indonesian myself, i will admit, our government are trying their best to be neutral as much as possible, the moment that our EEZ on North natuna sea we're intruded by the Chinese coast Guard, we immediately turn the table to strengthen the Natuna based while at the same time trying to be professional as much as possible to keep the tension low, because we want to avoid tension as long as possible, not because we were scared, but because we see it as unbenefitial, But don't misunderstood our neutrality because we will respond if they decided to do something stupid.
I'll give you an example of The first major incident on 2018 while multiple Chinese coast guard and multiple illegal Chinese fisherman's are detected entering Indonesia north natuna sea EEZ, Indonesia respon by sending multiple warship and multiple fighter jet, simultaneously Indonesian government immediately summoned the Chinese embassy to ask what are their intention regarding the incident.
there is no point you explaining much here, even Taiwan ROC also claim 11-dash line (1947 & 1935) decades before China PRC & Natuna join Indonesia 1956
That's how we should be. There's no reason to get into conflict of interests of other countries.
That's not trying to be neutral but managing the situation correctly (also regarding great power politics happening in the region and the whole world). Indonesia never states that it's a neutral country nor does it have a foreign policy based on neutrality (its foreign policy is "free and active" instead).

Interoperability is simply mean Indonesia is ensuring its predominantly NATO/Western oriented Military is ready to respond and to work with regional Armies whenever the situation dictate. While Garuda Shield can be seen as succesful Military diplomacy between Indonesia and USA, Indonesia has also recently engaged with China in building more comprehensive defence co-operation. This should be natural for Indonesia because China is its largest economic partner and Indonesia is keen to stick with its non-align policy despite regional volaitilty and global multi polarisation

as a non aligned country, indonesia must using it's strategic position to the best result possible, in securing deffense for it self. indonesian strategic position will become a demerit if indonesia forming military alliance with anyone, as indonesia will lost the "premium" perk that forcing any superpower countries to keep indonesia to stay neutral. by becoming neutral, indonesia actualy have stronger position to force superpower countries to not involving indonesia into their conflicts and forcing them to have good relationship with indonesia.
this is one among many reason why china didn't do reckless move in enforcing their claim over indonesian EEZ in north natuna sea. because if they did that and indonesia see them as enemy, "the 3 door" that indonesia hold will be closed for china. the effect will be similiar to how houthi closing red sea route for pro israeli vessels, only this time it will be worst as indonesia is also an important resources supplier for world's industries, mainly in china.
China's 11 dash line used to extend deep into Indonesia, they knew they had to reduce their claims because they would be fighting too many countries at that point. But you can bet when they're done with both Vietnam and Philippines, they will extend it back to 11-dash line just like they've now started calling their 9-dash line as 10 dash line now. So Indonesia strategy should be neutral but slightly leaning towards US to deter China of even considering to reconsider their 11 dash line.

For comparison, to deal with germany's 5 million soldiers in one front, USSR have to deploy 30 million soldier and lost 60 million citizen
Neutral is not the correct word. Not aligning yourself to one of the superpowers doesn't necessarily mean that you are neutral (theoretically you could be in another block outside of the superpowers', for example). Indonesia does try to actively balance the two superpowers since the cold war era, if not for its own national interest (and the SEA region, even the world, by extension) then for world peace as mandated by its constitution.

As a Malaysian, I don't think my country needs a "Garuda Shield". Why? Because Malaysia is a member of FPDA, Five Power Defence Arrangements, which is one of the strongest military alliances in the world consisting of Malaysia itself, the UK, Australia and Singapore. The FPDA is enough to keep China out of the South China Sea. Besides, the reason why Malaysia does not need "Garuda Shield" is because the host of this exercise is Indonesia, our rival nation during the K*nfr*ntasi. It's all about the pride and dignity of the Bangsa Melayu or “Malay race”.

The aim of the Super Garuda Shield exercise is clear to increase military capabilities between Indonesia and the United States, not an exercise to fight China regarding the South China Sea, because Indonesia's foreign policy is non-aligned/does not take sides with any bloc power.
