- Cat chats with Alan Lancaster.
For 25 years, Alan Lancaster was bassist with one of the most successful rock bands of all time. A band he founded with school friend Francis Rossi and one which enjoyed multi-platinum album sales and stadium gigs.
But an acrimonious split after Status Quo opened the stage at Live Aid in 1985 left Alan alone in the wilderness, trying to navigate his way through the music business jungle.
Alan tells me about how he survived rejection, playing with the Bombers and the Party Boys, and what it was like to be part of the biggest musical event the world has ever witnessed.
Rip Alan you was an absolute legend and fantastic bass player 😢
A legend in his time, surely missed these day or nights, Alan always gave mi a boost. Thanks and you deserve Yr Rest! Hasta la vista and God bles! ❤🙏✌️💯😇💙👍
Status Quo where not the same when john and Alan left great group at the beginning , nice to here from Alan . Thanks😊
My pleasure. Xx
Sir Alan of Lancaster !
Alan you will always be the instigator in the creation of ''the number one rock and roll band in the land".
i really enjoyed that, it was good to just let Alan talk without being cut off & interupted by the interviewer. Quo lost it's soul, or should I say rock when Alan went, he had a sound that added so much to 'the real' Quo. I was introduced to Quo in 1978 age 12 by my 65 year old neighbour (a story in itself) who played me Softer Ride & 45 Hundred Times together with some Deep Purple & Sabbath, my life changed that day & the real Quo has been the soundtrack of my life. Nice one Alan & Good interview :-)
Thank you for your lovely feedback. Glad you have enjoyed the interview x
Excellent interview and insight into the reality of life in and after being in a top band like Quo.
Great interviewer too, empathetic, asked great questions, and then let Alan answer uninterrupted. Well done.
Thank you for your lovely comments and I’m so pleased you enjoyed the interview x
Rest in peace, Alan. 😪
I had the pleasure of meeting Alan an absolute gentleman.
💕
Who gives their time for their fans, this guy who we are listening to, I had a beer in Hamilton New Zealand with Alan lancaster after he played with the Party Boys and all i could say to him after their gig was I'm a big fan of Quo. and he thanked me for that.. Wow. One cool Dude. Cheers. Chook.
He has always been my favorite and after this I know why. Amazing gentle man.
Brilliant, thank you Alan Charles Lancaster
Lovely interview, really good. What a gent he is!
Thank you, Darren and, yes, he is! X
Great to hear him. Quo was never the same after 1984, that really was the Final Gig. But it was good to see the reunion shows.
ALAN CHARLES LANCASTER otherwise known as NUFF, has passed away in Sydney, his home for 45 years.
The founding member and the backbone of STATUS QUO had been suffering from Multiple Sclerosis for many years.
Alan battled on bravely, performing at QUO's Reunion gigs in 2013 and 2014.
Even though he had MS, Alan's performance and his vocals were the strongest of the three.
My favourite member of QUO is Alan Lancaster.
I had the pleasure of having a beer and a smoke with Alan at a Sydney pub gig, in Five Dock, when he had The Lancaster Bombers and The Lancaster/Brewster Bands in the late 80's.
We had a longer chat at The Lewisham Hotel as well.
These were dirty, grungy hotels, though this didn't phase the great man of the people.
Alan was the most beautifil man, very humble, down to earth and a great guy to talk with and have a laugh.
Vale Alan ( Nuff ) Lancaster
RIP mate, you were one of the greatest Rockers of all time.
In lock down just found this interview... Fantastic interview letting nuff have his say about what really happened behind the scenes with quo. After Alan and John were forced out of quo the band was never the same without the powerhouse behind parfitt and rossi.great to hear an interview where the person is not interrupted 👍👍
Thank you for your lovely feedback, so pleased you enjoyed the interview x
RIP Alan a truly nice guy
Road house blues...just take me now...backwater junction 😎👍
R.I.P Alan Lancaster 😥
I met Alan many times during the Quo years. First time in 1978,in the Wisseloord Studio's, Hilversum, Holland, when Quo recorderd the album "If You Cant Stand The Heat". We made some photo's together, and also we met during Live gigs, backstage, chat many times. Great memories. Great and humble man.
How lovely. And yes, Alan is a very humble man x
IM FROM MEXICO CITY.. AND I WONDER IF HIM PLAY THE SONG .. CALLS ...
YOUR KIND OF LOVE ...
Shit, man.
When the 1st song came on I Duckduck'd Alan Lancaster's Bombers, just to find out he died a couple of days ago.
So weird, I was playing the Quo again throughout this week without knowing about this.
Anyway, very nice interview with a lovely bloke.
Keep rocking, friends ! Enjoy life while it lasts.
What a brilliant and lovely interview, thank you so much for letting us hear his very personal story of Quo and beyond.
Thank you, Andy. The pleasure was all mine. Feel free to subscribe to the channel or at cattales.co.uk for more tales. Xx
Sound out to the interviewer for letting him talk and not interrupting every 20 seconds! Brilliant.
23rdJune Thank you, I really appreciate your feedback xx
@@cattalespodcast No problem.
Quite agree. Very listenable and well steered
Thank you for the lovely comments, Martin. So glad you enjoy listening! Xx
Thanks Nuff, great voice and songs contributed to complete and original classic Quo sound! Stay safe 🤘🏻
1974 Quo album 😎👍
Great interview
Rip Alan you was an absolute legend
Great interview,, loving the part about the PLC tracks.
Thank you! So pleased you’ve enjoyed it x
Always a soft spot for Quo, was my first concert in '74
RIP Alan
This is well worth listening to Alan is literate and still got his marbles a well presented interview.
Thank you for your lovely feedback. So glad you enjoyed it x
I d love to hear his other stuff.
It s a shame they dont get money
from spotify and things like this
A great Interview with a great guy. All credit to the person doing the interview she let it flow im not sure her name but is really good 😀
davie.b1972 thank you for your lovely feedback, Cat will be thrilled to hear your comments. So glad you enjoyed the show. X
That's bull about him being left alone in the wilderness . Alan had made it clear that his move to Australia was permanent, so how could a band that gigs 230days per year fit that in.
That said , I am glad I saw him in the 1984 tour and again in 2014.
A legend who will be missed. RIP Alan, hopefully Rick is there to welcome you. 🙏🎸🎸
I am shocked and saddened to wake up this morning to the news that the lovely Alan Lancaster of Status Quo has passed this morning. Such a genuine, humble man, a rarity in the music business and a loss to the world. RIP Alan xx
im pretty sure ive heard him say he had never meant it to be a move to be away permenantly and francis rossi made the decsion to leave him out...rossi has never been one for being too attached to the other members....
Come on Alan you’re we’re the best bass player
Specially on the song Rock&Roll from the Just supposing album.
Unbelievable good bass playing
After you left the bass groove was gone
Francis wrote famous Quo songs and most of the singles
He has the most recognized Vocal of Quo
We are 35 years further now
Enjoy you’re history and don’t be that bitter
Great honest interview Alan Quo lost the plot after you and Spud departed.....they now sound like Smokie Loved your final gig with Quo in Dublin Best wishes for 2021
I think 1974 album QUO was their best ....and they did go down down when John n alan left 😥
Only just listened to this. Great interview, some good insight from Alan. Hope that the tracks with Rick and John are released soon , if Rossi won't do it get someone else . Alan was right about people changing .
So glad you enjoyed it x
GOOD BYE ALAN LANCASTER...LEGEND 🇲🇽
Alan Lancaster 7/02/1949 - 26/09/2021
Bassist/Singer/Songwriter/ Producer/Genius of STATUS QUO fame, has died aged 72 of Multiple Sclerosis at his Sydney home, surrounded by his family.
Born in London, he moved to Australia in 1976 after marrying his beautiful wife Dayle.
Alan wrote and co-wrote many classic Rock songs
The 9 1/2 minute Psych/Rock song "Is It Really Me, Gotta Go Home" was written by the Genius of Alan Charles Lancaster.
Ma Kelly's Greasy Spoon album 1970 on the Astor / Pye Label.
Produced by the late / great John Schroeder.
Anyone who met Nuff would know first hand what a beautiful, sweet and charming gentleman he was.
I had the pleasure of socialising with Alan at a few gigs in the late 80's, at some of his gigs with The Lancaster Bombers
and The Lancaster / Brewster Band and The Party Boys, the latter having 2 Chart Topping Hits.
" Hold Your Head Up " by Argent and " He's Gonna Step On You Again " by John Kongos.
Alan produced a multi-platinum selling album for Pianist Roger Woodward.
RIP Alan Lancaster
I think Francis got too big for his boots and didn't treat Alan and John too good in the end.
Massive egomaniac, Rossi is.
@@goesjem I dont think so..Rossi worked very hard all his lide for the group. .Shame your opinion.....
Rossi turned into a complete wanker!! I use to be a big fan of the 70's stuff till Rossi fucked it up!! He turned it into a pop band!!
Lovely guy.
Coghlan quit after kicking over his Drum Kit in the studio one day.
Alan told the other guys that " he'll be back "
Coghlan got on a plane and flew home, never to return.
Rossi and Parfitt were imbibing way too muck cocaine and inadvertently were blocking John and Alan out of their inner sanctum.
Rick and Francis had their own private codes and language that no one else understood.
Even Rick had a meltdown at an airport one day, when he exploded at Francis, saying that he was sick of being No.2 in the band or 2nd fiddle, words to that effect.
Francis has a dictatorial facet to his personality and if you didn't " fall into line " then you did what John and Alan did and left the greatest Rock band of all time. Very, very sad.
Just his name is Cool. Big up Alan, up there with Rick, and Lemmy :) R.I.P. :)
Poignant now. Rest easy, Mr. Lancaster.
Sad news Cat, Alan was a key in the Frantic Four
Very sad indeed, Pete x
GOOD BYE ALAN LANCASTER 🇲🇽
I didn't know he died until i saw the repeat the Royal Variety show 2021.
I've got the live AL Bombers album.......It's great.....they should've gone further.
He seems almost he was about to turn into Einstain.
Tipuco englush man" me encanta¡¡¡¡ igual Rossi....y ¡cuanto se le echa de menos a Rick......
I always think they should have ditched Rossi after blue for you, saying that Nuff does sound a little bitter here IMO
I think the new members are brilliant but there is still a part of me that thinks the original members are still missed
He should write is autobiography.
Apparently he is/was, but that was about ten years ago.
The UK end of the 90s was the decline of the music industry here, the LIVE AID captured the great artists from 70s and 80s. BBC banning Quo, which was terrible, record companies no longer existed, and things like Britain's got talent, which they didn't, was the norm...things change....shame, thanks for the music Nuff....
Well I can further ..South London boy myself ..I went into to music ..Played with name bands..on EmI.. 12 years old ..Quo Album ..I wanted to be a rock star ..nearly did it ..nice girls along the road ..and the study ..You started it all for me ..im a drummer ..loved John Coughlan ..Cant express my love ...Apart of Quo Army ..sort of went down myself ...years later ..England is awful ..insular ..Loved you so much as my starter in music.. words cannot say .. I play Quo when Im down ..they lift me up always ..when I need it ..like when I was 12 ..piece of my heart ..just is
Good luck to you mr Lancaster. A bit bitter but not twisted.
Strange thing... I am a member of several Status Quo groups on Facebook. I placed this link on some of those facebook pages and it got always refused by their administrators. A shame because this a very interesting interview wich is part of the Quo story.
Listen to this... this is very very good music.

That is very sad to hear but I am so pleased you enjoyed the interview. Thank you for listening...and sharing. X
it`s sad, that he`s bitter about the ending of the Frantic Four. But life goes on and he sounds like in good spirit these days.
Saw the 4 reunion In Hammersmith 2013. All music up to 1976 🎶
Average
Obviously Alan's easy to wind up, he's a proud guy, from a generation where you had to fight I guess.
The frantic four (two reunion tours) were great, but, with respect, Spud and Alan weren't match fit, but both of them had to play the way Rick and Francis had played since '86.
The first tour they cut 4500 times into Rain, that's the way "Quo lite" played it for years wasn't a frantic four thing.
A number of adjusting in both camps. The 2014 shows were much better and live a good way to go out, but behind the scenes Alan health wasn't getting any better.
Francis is francis at the end of the day.
But all the Quo fans loved them, even so.
@@WesW3187 yep. 🤟
Disagree, the weak link on the 2013 tour was Rossi, that is how the 2014 tour happened, so that he could make amends. I have a recording of the 2013 gig in Glasgow and Rossi's lead is very erratic, sometimes on it, sometimes not. Nuff and Spud were steady in 2013 and killed it in 2014. Rick was Rick
@@dennism5731 I thought Francis Rossi had to assume the position in the Frantic Four concerts because, with all four old members, the status quo (no pun intended) returned. Ie Alan Lancaster was (at least equal) leader.
Terrible interviewer; sounds like my mum "that must be awful"
I was interested to dig into your singer songwriting career. Jesus, your last UA-cam video was 12 years ago. Terrible guitar skills that. If your guitar playing is that bad, I’d hate to hear what your singing and lyrics are like. Have you done any live radio interviews or just played at a few local clubs? If I owned a club, I would not expect you to bring any punters my way. X

@@petewoodroffemusic , a man of many words. I guess very poor at writing also.

He comes across as likeable but also a tough-minded person who knows his mind so how much room would there be for two people like that in a band especially when the other one is the main songwriter?
Claymor Yes, he is a really lovely guy. X
I think Alan didn t like some
of Rossi s later stuff, esp.
Margeurita Time and said so.
(I agree wt Alan on that one!)
I m wondering if that was the
final nail in the coffin?
Just a theory.
