Great tour. Thanks.🤩 I visited Clacton-on -Sea in the 80's when I was a student at the University of Essex and liked the beach and the gardens. But I can see that it does look much better now.
it used to be a nice area. when i was a kid it was great. But sadly over the last 15 years its gone downhill with all the drug addicts moving in there and such. its not what it used to be anymore. definitely avoid Jaywick. its a hellhole. I also don't like the club in st Osyth its boring and lacks entertainment value
Used to live in Clacton in the late 50’s and 60’s. Met my husband there when I was 16. Moved to Wirral in the 70’s and have been here ever since. We will have been married 59 years this September. Have not been back to Clacton for about 20 years even though my brother and his family still live there. I loved your tour and recognised so many places but it has changed so much, for the better I mean. I used to work as a secretary to the Photographic manager at Butlins in the early 60’s and went in and out of the camp a lot. Thank you for the tour, brings back a lot of memories.
Clacton is my home town where i grew up, and always love going back every year for the air show, sadly won't be going this year, but look forward to next year. thankyou for the update.
I was born and grew up in Clacton. Many happy childhood memories during the 1970’s. Butlin’s had a great swimming pool that had windows that looked out at ground level, so people could walk past and see you swimming. The town also had an annual prom race or more correctly, adult pub crawl! Great video of the town and I learnt a few things too.
i just spent 7 days at a caravan in clacton with my daughter and 6 grandchildren it was the best time ever ,the beach was great even the rainy days were fantastic we were there in the middle of the storm ,and im coming back next year already booked nice people all friendly
I worked at Butlins as a waiter in 1980. It was the same year Billy Butlin died. All staff had to wear black armbands, but they didn't have enough To go round. The dining room was one of the largest in Europe seating a little over 4,000. I spent the whole summer season working as a waiter and it was the best six moths of my life, most enjoyable. Very upset when it was pulled down to make a housing estate. I have not been back to Clacton for over 20years. I will visit soon. Thanks Tim.
I visited Clacton in 2022 just for 2 days to visit a sick relative. In the short spare time I had I was impressed with the large number of seats along the seafront as I suffer a walking difficulty. The locals I met were all so friendly. An early morning walk was great as I found a seat at the end of the pier overlooking the sea. Restaurants and cafes were a disappointment, but I only looked around the seafront area. I was pleasantly surprised.
My mother worked at Butlins back in 1950s; she met my father there. My father was on holiday with his friends. Mum always talks about her summer seasons at Butlins all the time x
We always had a week's holiday in Clacton when I was a kid back in the 1950's. My parents knew someone -Sid - who worked on the gates at Butlins and he used to let us in sometimes. My brother and I thought it was like Paradise - everything was free in the amusement park. The indoor swimming pool was very impressive and below it there were thick glass windows so you could see the swimmers' legs thrashing about. One year there was a terrific storm and the Helter Skelter on the pier blew over as did the double Big Wheel at Butlins - there was some other major damage and somehow things were never quite the same afterwards. As we were there pre-package holidays to Spain the beach used to get really crowded especially near the pier. The Jolly Roger hosted a traditional seaside concert party - I think there was a different programme every day. I once entered a talent contest and got so nervous I wet myself on stage trying to sing Mountain Scenery of which I only knew the first line - the rest was la la la.
I live there lol small world yeah it's not a bad place you good and you have the bad like anywhere you go the arcades are great on and off the pier and the sea front itself is a good place to chill in the summer
I spent 3 childhood holidays there, once when I was very little [pre-school], in a seafront guest house, I do not remember much of this, but do remember having an inflatable model boat on a string which I sailed in a seafront model boating lake, and two Butlins holidays [ages 8 and 14]. I have watched this and several others [from Butlin's 1960s] problem is they make me want to cry when I see pictures of little kids then and realising that, like me, they are all elderly now. I notice from your film that the model boat lake, unlike Butlins, still exists.
I remember the Butlins in Clacton. I never actually stayed there but we used to visit occasionally when we were on holiday at the Shangri-La Caravan park in St Oyseth. It had a funfair at the front, right on the main road and it was massive. Remember it had a huge scalelextric track in one of its amusement arcades.
I live between Chelmsford and basildon but I choose Clacton over Southend any day. All sea side towns with a pier are a bit rough but there are plenty of places rougher than clacton. Love it!

Never been to Clacton cos have always been led to believe it wasn’t up to much, but now I realise the people telling me that haven’t been for 40 years lol. It looks like a really nice place. Thanks again for a lovely video, I really do enjoy watching them😀😀
Funny how Ive come across this video on my recommendations, as I was at Clacton-on-sea earlier this week. First time Ive been there since I was a kid back in the 90`s, my family used to go there alot on holiday. We either stayed at Orchards holiday park or Highfields. I think Clacton is beautiful, the pier has obviously had a bit of money spent on it
I live just down the road from Clacton (Brightlingsea) and you got it spot on. It’s a great place to visit for the day. And the cinema is so cheap, with the 3 of us it’s £15 you can’t beat that 😀

Such a shame you didn’t mention the other theatre in Clacton which can trace its beginnings back to 1894. The West Cliff Theatre which is located opposite the hospital and along the road from the tower and gardens, has been running a Summer variety show for 125 years. This amazing venue is run by a Trust and mainly staffed by volunteers.
@@WalkWithMeTim The sea has never been clear in clacton, i used to live there and every time I went to the sea front, the sea is just brown. The water at clacton sea front is one of the worst rated quality in England.
Hi Tim again. Well been here a couple of times but quite a long time ago yes the seafront gardens are beautiful very lovely 😊 lots of lovely places to have a rest and a sit with a ice cream 🍦. Very nice seafront walk . Beach looks very clean. Well done very good film.yes I can. See a lot of improvement Since I was there very lovely 😊 well done 👍 Dee👍👍👍👍
Aw such memories for me, my best friend and I spent a week at Butlins , our first holiday away from our parents. We still reminisce about the pebble dash walls INSIDE the room, a porcelain pot , only one mind lol, because the toilet block was too far to get to if you were , shall we say worst for wear, not us of course 😉, 3 planks of wood with a wire and an old piece of curtain made the wardrobe, a camp photographer took a photo of us at breakfast.... I’ll just leave that here lol , not the best of accommodation but we had a great laugh
Another enjoyable but felt a bit short video (probably as we were enjoying it so much) from Clacton, so much more to see... Butlin's Holiday Camp Clacton on sea went in 1979 my parents took there and went to filey and pwlleli the pwlleli was good had cablecar though w the chalets
Yeah I remember visiting Butlins for the day back in the late 1960`s, they also had a 9 hole pitch & putt nearby - about 2 or 3 years ago they were building the beach next to the pier (lefthand side as you face it) - must visit again soon, as it looks great now! - what are the parking charges for the sea front?
Great walk as usual Tim, How different it is just down the coast from last week, the two opposites of Essex resorts.. This IS a place I'd visit rather than last weeks outdated dirty resort 😊
Great walk about. Been loving all your videos showing a lot of the places i have been to. I now live in Queensland Australia so dont get to the great British seaside that much. Me and a mate went to the last week that Butlins was open, had a great week. What made me laugh was the water temp. 18c wow it never drops below 22c here but we dont swim until at least 25c. Living here has made me weak :) Keep up the great work
Great video I love the quality and I was clacton 3 weeks ago and people wasn't social distancing but it was lovely beach and the arcades are great and loads of Beach huts as well

Not sure but parked far and walked in ... I'm a cheap skate
The Martello Tower where you were used to actually house a zoo many years ago!
did it .. wow
Looks lovely.
Margate in comparison is absolutely terrible.
Lol
Lovely old school pier 👍
its just a regular pier, not a school pier.

Thanks Michael
Must try to visit
defo
Great walk as usual Tim, How different it is just down the coast from last week, the two opposites of Essex resorts.. This IS a place I'd visit rather than last weeks outdated dirty resort 😊
Agree
The sea looks soo much cleaner than what it actually is 😂 Clacton ain't bad there just ain't a lot to do
But nice for a day out
Great grandad was the manager at Butlins Clacton
wow
Great walk about. Been loving all your videos showing a lot of the places i have been to. I now live in Queensland Australia so dont get to the great British seaside that much.
Me and a mate went to the last week that Butlins was open, had a great week.
What made me laugh was the water temp. 18c wow it never drops below 22c here but we dont swim until at least 25c. Living here has made me weak :)
Keep up the great work
Lol thanks kevin
