- Hundreds of fans came out to see the iconic recording artist, Anita Baker on Saturday May 11, 2024 at State Farm Arena, however fans were informed minutes before the scheduled start of the show that it had been cancelled due to an unforeseen reason.
Many fans took to social media to express their outrage and are demanding a refund as well as answers as to how this happen.

Thank you for breaking this down. When people on the outside see this kind of thing happen, they often don't have a clue of what really goes on. The fans in the house are offended, and the artist is left to absorb the negative impact because it's their name on the marquee and in all the advertisements. And who even knows the name of the promoter? Almost no one. Show Biz, the good. the bad. the ugly. and the indifferent.
Unfortunately, the public doesn't know the insider info that was shared, and Ms. Baker's legacy is being tarnished by these cancelations. 😢
I’ve been backstage and seen it too. I’ve seen janky promoters panicking and on the cellphone begging last minute investors to fund that back end money. The O’Jay once left a venue when their management informed them the balance has not been paid. They got in their limousine and left the building. Similar thing happened with Chaka Khan once. Sinbad once left a sold out audience just sitting and waiting for an hour after start time. He finally went on stage and apologized to the audience and agreed to do the show. He said he won’t punish the audience for something that they didn’t do, but stated that there is a promoter out of Denver that he will never, ever work with again. Everyone should know by now that Anita Baker protects her brand at all costs. If every single aspect of that concert is not contractually on point, she’s not doing it. It’s called show BUSINESS!!!
If that’s the case her team needs to say so.
Very good explanation as to why concerts may be cancelled. I was thinking along the lines of the person being sick. Or, there is a major issue with the stage arrangement.

I stopped attending live shows years ago.... It was the over booking.
Tickets were just too expensive. Sometimes their was violence.
And parking fees are outrageous...

I was member of chapter 8 baker group in Detroit before she left went solo.Forgot about all us she always been snob.This guy don't no he talking about promotor this concert was live nations.She got money she just snob didn't want perform.
Your point is valid. However, Anita Baker's name is on the ticket and Ms. Baker owes the fans an explanation and an apology. It may not have been her fault. It may have been because this tour has been plagued with nothing but problems and most have come from Ms. Baker herself. However if it is a financial situation, Ms.Baker owes the fans an explanation because Ms. Baker is the one with the negative press. It is not the promoter or the arena that the fans are angry at.. It is Ms. Baker. The show was sold out so I am not sure how it was a financial situation.

Anita has always admitted she suffered from mood disorder and doesn't NOTHING TO HELP HERSELF!!!!! But takes out on anyone!!!!! I told her about herself and she blocked me on fb. I hope people learn that they human like everyone!!!!!!! Stop idolizing them.
Very, very well explained. Somebody misused the funds, and it happens more often than not like he said. I believe it's 💰 money that is involved and ain't nobody doing no show without getting paid. It's unfortunate that this happened.

Years ago I worked at Capitol Records as a Travel Agent. I booked many trips for her. She was a difficult client and always late.

The problem is, this has happened one too many times with her. Happened to a show I paid for as well, in another city.
Anita should focus on her mental health before attempting to perform another concert. Her behavior has been very erratic for decades.
Got all her CDs, that's good enough for me. Can listen in the privacy of my own home anytime. Stopped the concert thing yrs ago. 😊
Very well explained. Also Anita who posts on X frequently has not responded at all, which seems suspect. Someone who cares about their fans I would think would want to clear their name. Her character and integrity is being questioned and justifiably so.
It's called contracts and non disclosure agreements. If she says the wrong thing she can be sued

The majority of these artists like Anita cannot sell out these venues anymore because of the fans actually not interested in seeing them perform. Back when she first came out she can sell out a venue but not anymore they usually have to play at smaller venues.
To sum it up they’re not as popular anymore especially with the z generation or whatever they called themselves.
They’re just not in demand anymore.
I’ve seen Anita Baker when she was at her best! Seeing her now is a no for me for various reasons! ❤music 😅

Regardless of the cancelation, the tickets must be refunded to the people... Tickets are a binding contract for the concert and if that contract is broken, then monies need to be returned...

She postponed, rescheduled, and then canceled a show here over a 6 month span. While actually (barely) doing other shows elsewhere. Whatever the case, the overall look isn't good. No excuse will do (My opinion)
It gets confusing because there are 2 separate issues. Concert promotion where the artist earns money for performing shows and then there is the recording side.
When one gets a recording contract they get a signing advancement. payment.
That payment varies, but basically it is a loan against future record sales.
DMX, who was a friend and client said, the artist pays for everything, which is very true.
So recording, marketing, advertising, music videos, transportation. etc are all advanced by the record company and then recouped from the artist, so ultimately the artist pays for everything plus compound interest.
The only revenue that the artist gets to keep 100% of is touring and concerts.
That's the point. If these type of situations continue, she won't have to worry about retiring, her fans will cancel her. It's already happening
Regardless; the fans loses! If they recoup the money for the tickets; more expenses were incurred ; and y’all know it!
Conjecture... Like N minaj..she should address the fans who brought her to fame for a few songs. Being thankful and gracious goes a long way. Not everyone who can sing gets to be Anita. Show some some fan respect.

Ok State Farm Arena seats 19,445 let’s say tickets went for $35 that’s 680,575 a nice piece of change on the low end 😮I’m thinking ticket sales were not that great, because why would both sides risk ruining their reputation, just my opinion 🧐I would have suggested a smaller venue👍🤩💰💰💰

I've read many times that Anita can be something of a "bitch" in a lot of ways. I last saw her about six years ago. It was a good performance, but I'd have think hard as to whether I'd put up the $100-odd dollars again!

Anita could have done the same thing as Howard Hewett. At least give their fans an explanation. It’s the fans who buys the records which gets the artists on the radio and concerts.

I figured that the money was funny. This same thing happened to Fantasia in Chicago earlier in her career. The promoter gave her a deposit and promised the balance at intermission. They didn’t have it and she left. 😂
She canceled twice here in Nashville. We had 6 row tickets.

When Anita Baker came to Houston, she spent half the time bitching out people in the audience. It was disappointing and unprofessional. I'll never go to her concert again, and I flew from France to watch it.

Drake cancelled a few times in Ohio, and the same with Rap artists. One of these days going to see these artists will be history. The fans will finally get fed up with paying all that money and the artists don't show up.🤔. They will recognize that there are more things in this world to spend your money on. 💰

Promoters try to get u to perform , even when they haven’t coughed up the 50% balance….start talking about not disappointing the fans….yet weren’t thinking of said fans when they didn’t have the money they r contracted to pay….I worked in the Industry as Road Manager for artistes…once told the band that if anyone made a misrake n played a note, I wouldbreak their finger…promoter wanted to wait until end of show to pay the 50% balance….when he realised that this Jamaican woman wasn’t joking, he coughed up….
Yes you are in the business to please your fans, but not to please them for free. If you are not paid, do not perform. There will be no show.
Folks don’t care what happened-they just want her shucking and jiving to their appeasement and for their entertainment. My ex husband was a singer/musician-folks always wanted to pay less than owed and agreed, tried to get him to perform under sus conditions-Mic didn’t work, stage wasn’t lighted properly, feedback was bad, didn’t have reverb, dressing room is the closet without lighting-BYOF (the f is for flashlight), sketchy locations, etc. artists get tired of it all. Imagine having to do your job perfectly and while not getting paid.

I have worked with Howard at least a dozen times and most recently in metro Atlanta about a month ago.
My experiences with him has always been professional and he is very easy to work with.
I am aware of the past situation with he and Jody Whatley back in the day, but I didn't know him then so I can't speak to that situation.
Many artists start off in this business as rude, crude and socially unacceptable but as times go by they understand this game and they usually adjust their lives and behavior. Perhaps that is the case with him.
Unfortunately this industry creates monsters and we see that playing out today in reports.
When certain people get the power, affluence and control it seems as though nothing else matters and everytime one crosses the line, they don't even see the line anymore.
