Her breath control while maintaining such a pure tone at this slow tempo is just awesome. The pathos she brings coupled with crystal clear diction is a lesson to every singer since.
I "learned" this aria via Jessye Norman live at Carnegie Hall, a memorable night. I heard this, and I'm swooning. I am not a musician, yet this feels DEFINITIVE to me. Thank you so much for posting.
How to describe the emotions awakened by this performance... beyond words! Something which is so rare in todays music. The other dimention, when you listen music, but see your life...
The most glorious heart breaking rendition by the world's most wondrous contralto that ever lived and still lives. Vielen Dank meiner beliebste Diapasondoro...'melody of gold '.
Heavenly Father, what a voice. I first heard her sing on vinyl in 1968 and I have never forgotten the experience. I still think her as the greatest female voice I have ever heard in my 3 score and 10 lifetime.
She is the one and only. That can sing this Aria with such dignity , élégance , and profound émotion .... certainly we will Remember you allways ..... For EVER Dame Janet BAKER
Having caught the 2022 Proms concert version of the opera (brilliant) I went back to this sublime recording. No disrespect to Alice Coote's performance, but Dame Janet is something quite out of this world and on an emotional level it is shattering
Prompted to listen to this after seeing a documentary about Dame Janet on the BBC on 14 April. To say I was moved is an understatement - such breath control and such understanding of the role. Happily we were both born in the fair city of York.
DanielZavagna I discovered Janet Baker and the concert choir in high school I was a sophomore 15 years old 1966. We were singing Vivaldi's Gloria which is typical for a high school concert choir. We took Allstate the state championship two years running best tenor Alto. Our Music Teacher mr. Welch was very good you said to us listen to this and listen to this voice her name is Janet Baker. I never forgot that my best friend and I when in college went to the college musical Library he had never heard. Vivaldi's Gloria. We put on our headphones and listen inside the music library. Janet Baker had a solo sung in Latin. David played the cello very well. He was my best friend in the University we had a lot in common music vast vocabulary sense of humor Etc. My father really liked him and to David that meant a lot he said to him David my son if you have Arnold as a friend you have a friend for life. I'm Arnold. My dad's name was Daniel my mother's name was Alice. Yes Janet Baker is one of a kind I think the most beautiful metzl soprano to come from the British Isles. I'm 6th generation American I call that sadness LOL. Mozart Salzburg Vienna deeply appreciate that beautiful music that he created especially his operas The Marriage of Figaro abduction from the seraglio Don Giovanni. The Magic Flute Cosi Fan tutte. Thank you for listening I use the microphone when I make a comment do to not immune deficiency I am fine I will be 68 years old in 2 months thank you for your time and your patience they're Opera loving fan goodbye. ADIEU
@@arnoldamaral7406 Thank you for sharing. I really like her recording of Bach's Vergnugte Ruh beliebte Seelen Lust. You should check it out of you haven't.
L'interprétation de Janet Baker est si profonde qu'elle transcende la technique au bénéfice de l'expression qui semble passer devant tout si bien nous arrivons parfois au coeur de l'âme ou la prière ou a simple sublime ineffable...
There are numerous examples of musical perfection on the page, Beethoven,Mozart,Wagner etc, etc. But very, very rarely in performance. This is one of those very, very rare occasions.
the lyrics When I am laid, am laid in earth, may my wrongs create No trouble, no trouble in, in thy breast When I am laid, am laid in earth, may my wrongs create No trouble, no trouble in, in thy breast Remember me, remember me, but ah Forget my fate Remember me, but ah Forget my fate Remember me, remember me, but ah Forget my fate Remember me, but ah Forget my fate
Ed Moore ..... Even this performance is truncated. Perhaps, because it is live, clapping starts too soon. I think the audience should wait a good 5-10 seconds before clapping :Time to let the music soak in. The music is still radiating outward, outward and it needs a space of silence to move into. The cacophonous beating of hands, the rowdy applause, beats it back and obliterates the afterglow that is absolutely necessary for the FULLEST enjoyment of the music.
+MrAviron Their voices are obviously different but I don't think you can honestly say one singer is finer than the other. The are both at the very top of their art and that's all that matters.
She is mezzo. Ferrier is also. Different colours. Both beautiful beyond belief. You can't really compare. It boils down to a preference of one register over another if you do . A modern interpretation that is very good I'd Joyce DiDonato who is a number one Janet Baker fan! Similar devotion to composer and text and ability to convey emotion. Her voice is also mezzo but a tad higher
Sorry Ferrier contralto. Autotext does edits! DiDonato mezzo also Baker . She does the Sea Knaben Wunderhorn lieder beautifully and much mezzo repertoire
I agree with all of the praise. But that aside, does this version end abruptly?? Here is the entire lyric sung by Dame Baker: DIDO: But Death, alas! I cannot shun; Death must come when he is gone. CHORUS Great minds against themselves conspire And shun the cure they most desire. DIDO: Thy hand, Belinda... darkness shades me; on thy bosom let me rest; More I would, but Death invades me: Death is now a welcome guest! When I am laid, am laid in earth, may my wrongs create no trouble, no trouble in thy breast; Remember me, remember me, but ah! forget my fate. Remember me, but ah! Forget my fate. ==================================================== I have listened to many other versions. It has just the right balance of lyricism and gravitas.
This is the definitive performance of this aria. Everything that Janet Baker does is as near perfection as is possible. In fact the only negative comment one could make about her, has nothing to do with her voice or her singing, but her conservative hairstyle.
Lovely voice. I grew up with her. But Dart and the ECO are very poorly served by the muddiest recording I ever heard. All those extraordinary chords and the ground base they play against is just a mud bath. Horrible.
This is one of the most celebrated operatic laments ever written, and Dame Janet's performance is beautiful.
This is artistry of the highest order! What a singer! what singing!
Unbelievably beautiful, I am grateful for having found it.
Her breath control while maintaining such a pure tone at this slow tempo is just awesome. The pathos she brings coupled with crystal clear diction is a lesson to every singer since.

Oui , je n'apprécie pas trop la rapidité actuelle qui pousse le terreau musical au bulldozer de la précipitation...
YES
If you don`t shed a tear to this legendary rendition from Dame Janet you have no emotion, absolutely brilliant and unsurpassable.
Janet Baker remains the most influential artist of my life. There is always her profound response to music and it never fails to to move me.
How to describe the emotions awakened by this performance... beyond words! Something which is so rare in todays music. The other dimention, when you listen music, but see your life...
She just sounds utterly divine...end of.
A beautiful woman, a beautiful singer.
The most glorious heart breaking rendition by the world's most wondrous contralto that ever lived and still lives.

Maybe Kathleen Ferrier was greater - and she was Janet Baker's heroine - I much prefer either to the current falsetto heros.
The best rendition of this aria I’ve ever heard. Gad! Such a pure, clear voice.
She is the one and only. That can sing this Aria with such dignity , élégance , and profound émotion ....
certainly we will Remember you allways ..... For EVER Dame Janet BAKER
Surely the finest Dido who ever performed.
Brilliant ,dramatically well done 👏, beautiful sound dido's lament.

Janet Baker is an artist touched by the Divine.

Jim Dunn I feel in love with her voice when in high school 1967 concert choir. Vivaldi's Gloria. Arnold Bourdon Amaral 🌎🌍🌏👑 DAME JANET INDEED
The definitive interpretation and rendition. Brava.
Cuánta tristeza... y cuánta belleza...
What a sadness... and what a beauty...
Her rendition gave me goose bump! Really amazing! Thanks for having youtube so we can discover these treasures!
This is one of the saddest opera arias ever. And what rendition from Baker!

Heavenly, overwhelmingly beautiful.
No one I have ever heard has bettered this rendition ...
So Touching! The most wonderful opera aria! And Dame Janet Baker!!! Her voice is amazing!

OMG, peerless.
Exquisite! Thank you
La mejor Dido jamás gravada. La voz de Janet Baker es sublime como esta tristisima aria.
She is in a league of her own
Para mi esta versión de Dame Janet Baker será el mejor Lamento de Dido jamás cantado.

England's second finest contralto, after the incomparable Kathleen Ferier
MrAviron Well, you might at least have had the decency to spell her name right.
+MrAviron Their voices are obviously different but I don't think you can honestly say one singer is finer than the other. The are both at the very top of their art and that's all that matters.
Don't say one is better than another, that is an absurdity.

I have listened to many other versions.

Which version of Janet Baker is it (year, conductor)? It is slitty different from the one with the images of the stage we find on UA-cam.
Yes it must be another one, it is even slower and the rhythm of the height note, the rhythm of the "remember me" high note etc are different..
Incantevole
Enjoyable
wow
oh mijn hemel...….dit overleeft een mens toch bijna niet...….
This is the definitive performance of this aria. Everything that Janet Baker does is as near perfection as is possible. In fact the only negative comment one could make about her, has nothing to do with her voice or her singing, but her conservative hairstyle.
I think she has her hair done perfectly .
Her hair looks fine to me.
Such a huge, dark and velvety voice in such a petite package!
2:42
Prachtig
Absolutely breath taking!! Phillip Jarrousky should attempt this....i recon it would be just as splendid if not more.
They didn't just call her 'Dame Granite' for nothing !!
See her singing an even better version here ua-cam.com/video/D_50zj7J50U/v-deo.html

sehr groß
posh as it gets
Lovely voice. I grew up with her. But Dart and the ECO are very poorly served by the muddiest recording I ever heard. All those extraordinary chords and the ground base they play against is just a mud bath. Horrible.
Contralto she is not in this piece, in fact she is in my opinion, more of a soprano since she has very high tonalities and almost zero chest voice...
Angela Bender She's a mezzo soprano. And very unique like Cotrubas.👑🌹🌎🌍🌏 Arnold Bourdon Amaral ❤️👑
her voice definitely has that richness/heaviness (can't think of a better word) - she's not all shiny/glassly like Joyce DiDonato, for example.
