Jeanne Calment, believed to be the world's oldest person, died today in Arles, France. She was 122.
Calment, who met Vincent Van Gogh when she was young, credited olive oil and Port wine for her longevity.
Though blind, nearly deaf and in a wheelchair, Jeanne Calment remained spirited and mentally sharp until the end.
She had spent the past 12 years in a retirement home in the southern city of Arles.
Sources close to the Arles city hall, who confirmed Mrs. Calment's death on Monday morning, gave no precise cause.
Birthdays were a chance to indulge. She said in February that she had impatiently awaited her birthday so she could "eat some chocolate and drink a little sweet wine".
Calment's doctor persuaded her to give up sweets two years ago, although she long claimed an occasional glass of Port wine - along with a diet rich in olive oil - were the keys to her long life.
The Guinness Book of World Records had listed Mrs. Calment as the oldest living person whose birth date could be authenticated by reliable records.
Born on February 21, 1875, she eventually became Arles' greatest attraction since the artist Vincent Van Gogh, who spent a year there in 1888.
She met him that year when he came to her uncle's shop to buy paints, and later remembered him as "dirty, badly dressed and disagreeable".
She gave up cigarettes in 1995, but her doctor said her abstinence was due to pride rather than health - she was too blind to light up herself, and hated asking someone to do it for her.
Calment had no direct descendants, having survived her husband, her daughter and her grandson.
At 85, she took up fencing lessons, and she was still riding a bike at 100.
At 121, Mrs. Calment gave a hint as to how she stayed sharp. "I dream, I think, I go over my life," she said, "I never get bored."

My neighbor, Mr. Vanderbilt, is 105 years old. When he is in the front yard he yells in a loud voice and waves hello. on no medications, always in a cheerful mood.
Bill Stotts protect him
Amazing to say you knew somebody born 1912
So awesome! I hope he is going well!
My 79 year old grandfather is on four different types of medication 🤣
Is he still alive?
@@KingJackson11355 Don't know as I moved away from the neighborhood three years ago.
Imagine being 61 and knowing you're only half way there
That's almost considered "elderly"
What an incredible person! Living to 100 is quite something but 122 is extraordinary
@@happybrachiosaurus1268 um
@@happybrachiosaurus1268 no
She is not that old. She assumed her mothers identity, to avoid paying tax when her mother died. So she is "only" in her 80's or 90's.
@@CanoMannArtist That is only a conspiracy theory. She answered questions that no one else would have known.
If you know what people in their 90s look like then you would know she was much older then that
she was considered elderly half her age ago.
61 is not elderly pmao
imcentz 61 was considered elderly in 1936
@@mitchwithacapitalm life lifespan was like 30 years then, so 61 was certainly elderly
@@swiftlemur7853 no it wasn’t lol. The average lifespan back in the mid 30’s was 65ish. But many people lived over that.
The country I live in the United States the average life expectancy still is not that high it’s only like high 70s I think. But many people live over that into their 90s
Say what you will, you need to have a lot of god damn courage to live to be that old. You really do.
The stories she could tell, and the wisdom she could share..
Imagine meeting Vincent Van Gogh and seeing edgy teens wear nirvana shirts in the same life time
LOL
She also almost lived long enough to outlive Princess Diana.
Am affraid of dying all the time, but idk about living 122 either....not if am unable to walk, move, talk, see or hear like i do now.
This one lived to read about
1. Titanic
2. Ww1
3. Great depression
4. Ww2
5. Civil rights movement
Not many can say they did that
Jesus she looked 122 in that last part! She was definitely not lying about her age!
She was probably dying in 1997 the first year of her life she felt that way.
I was happy to be about ten years old instead of 122 yrs old in 1997 much easier life in my mind.
Unbelievable! She lived 100 more years than my age right now!
That is extraordinary. She's seen everything that the 90's had to offer, all of the trends, the evolution, rich history, food. Ect
She also knew Van Gogh. Look it up.
Both 1890s and 1990s!
surviving your grand child
The aches and pains I have at 30...I dont even wanna know how awful she felt at 122
She actually felt very well for most of her life she said. It was only in the last couple of years she began to age a lot
Until 115 she could walk unassisted and she had a daily routine in the nursing home, also according to the staff she was the fastest resident in the nursing home. At 115 she fell and fructured her leg which required surgery and then she started using a wheelchair and abandoned her daily routine. Two years later she stopped smoking after 96 years. And five years later she died
Thats Pretty Impossible But She Has Taken Over 120 Years Old..
Living to be 122 was impossible! I wouldn’t be able to live at such age like 110 or older!
I'd hate to live that long, having to depend on others for the simplest of tasks like dressing and showering. I get scared around really old people in case they die in front of me
Aroma 217 really 🤔
Same
It was only in her hundreds when she moved into the care home and into her hundredteens that her age began to affect her lifestyle. Up until that point and for a while after moving in, doctors and nurses reported her to be much more agile than people twenty years younger. Able to wash herself, clean her own cutleryand glassware and do her own chores.
Actually unfortunately that is how my grandma died right in front of her Chinese caregiver! She died of heart and respiratory failure while her living assistant was giving her a shower at age 92 yrs old! 😱😱😱😱
This happened in 1997...
Back when I was in 3rd grade in 1997.
Thank you for the update Father Time
@mankyswan shut up
Living to 200 years old might be the norm in the future.
X1 Gen KaneshiroX it’s not possible
Harldog YT I can’t predict the future that well and you can not predict it that well. It’s always a good possibility. I can see people have some doubt about that. But I can also see people have some hope about that.
If god lets u live along damn time yeah if i live im gonna be 100 in 2102
Given that nobody has verifiably lived to 120 years before or since Jeanne suggests the absolute maximum human lifespan is around 120-125 years. We may be able to enhance it by technology to slow down aging and biological degradation, but unaided jeanne will likely remain the out-in-front oldest for a long time to come yet.
I hope Kane takana who’s almost 119 passes her age… dam to bad. Rest in paradise Kane
Why do older people tend to do that chewing/lip pressing motion with their jaws?
Threepwood habit because they have no teeth
and medication in some cases
Imagine being 22, knowing you have 100 years left to live
She was 24 when RDR2 took place
😂
Jeanne's record has proven undeniably extraordinary, as nobody since Sarah Knauss in 1999 has reached 119 years. Nobody but Jeanne has not just reached her 120's but lived well into them. A hypercentarian.
This is likely down to the culmination of a lifetime of healthy eating and lifestyle, genes, and a strong heart. I think it's possible someone will verifiably reach this age again as the numbers of supercentenarians continues to grow worldwide and that person will likely be Japanese.
Kane Tanaka turns 118 in less than a month, 22 years since that last happened. She is in good health and continues to play board games and move around her care home in Japan. Other likely candidates include Jeanne Bot of France who will turn 116 in February.
@@CesarClouds These informations have been proven multiple times as false.
If you know what someone in their 90s look like then you would know she was much older than that
But In that last part of the video she could not even open her eyes! Thats looks more like someone who’s 122 then 99?
@@CesarClouds I definitely would be sceptic too - considering she smoked, and the only person proven to live past 120. The theories do make reasonable points.
Don't know about that. At the end their she looked far older then a 100 year old
My great grandad was born when she was in her 20s, mad
To think she was alive the same time as Charles Darwin and Post Malone is mind boggling
She would’ve seen the whole century. Even just reading about & studying it is amazing, but imagine actually seeing it happen in person
She Was My Best Grandma Who Lived Long And 122 Years Old
Beata lei.....
I dont really want to live that long and her daughter died in 1934 or 1935 idk
this is great ,if at this time you understand who you ,recognize everyone ,on your own move, independently you eat, And enjoy life , -it is great to live up to such years. but if you live like a vegetable and others owe you care, that life is not so great...
She covered her face with a fan. Still a coquette at 122 lol
How not to get old
Here is how she saw all her family members die and end her family tree
Her grandparents died but only one lived to become a great grandparent when yvonne calment her daughter was born her grandpa was 83 and he died the same year her daughter was born
Then her mom passed away in 1924 at 86 and then her daughter did a child frederich billot in 1926 and her father became a great grandfather at 88,her father died on 28 january 1931 on his 93th birthday, her daughter died on january 19 1934 on her 36th birthday, her husband died in 1942 at 74,her son in law and grandson both died in 1963,and by then she was the only one in the family tree alive at 88 in 1963(apart from her granddaughter in law)
Then she died at 122 in 1997 and her granddaughter in law died in 2020 at 93
Jeanne loved chocolate, and I got a lindor chocolate ad on this video
Imagine flexing on your caretakers that your a century older then them
Why we get old?
What a great
They says she drank lots of wine and smoked cigarettes most of her life. Apparently the two worlds oldest house cats also had wine daily. My own mother has always been a regular wine drinker and she has aged beautifully...I think I need to drink more wine!
It's incredible how they become like babies again
Runner Phile and so will me and you
@@tanishanightingale yes a lot of people become like little kids again when they are older but not everyone. Some people actually stay in very good shape
Oh mon seigneur Elle est pus âgée que mon arriére grand-mére
My great-grandma is 83 and if she stays alive for another 39 years she could pass Jeanne Calment
But she wouldn't be the oldest person for very long at the most 10/20 30 months of being first place and then that would have been it
Everyone she knew in her twenties are all dead. Even the babies of old age
fucking rad to be the oldest person too bc she smokes EATS FUCKING MORE CHOCHOLATE THAN ME
My friend's mum is 220
She fell off a trampoline head first. Imagine if that didn't happen
To consider other healthy things: erect posture, house ventilation, use of hammock, rocking chair ("poltrona"), diet, drinks, absence of flu, seated posture, rest in gardens, patios, natural breathing, air currents, etc. The healthy characteristics of her home. DR. ANTONIO RODRÍGUEZ HERNÁNDEZ 🇭🇳
Oh hell nah
Didn't she turn out to be a fraud, that she used her mother's birth certificate or something?
That’s a big conspiracy theory on this case but they still tend to believe she was 122
@@KingJackson11355 if it's true then that is an impressive age to reach. Even 100 is impressive.
died too young
DANG IT BOYYY
nosforatue
I know that she attculy lied about her age she saud she was 122 but she was attculy 99 she was reported dead in 1934 but that was realy her mother
A few months ago a new research about veracity of calments age and against those Russians theory proved that she really lives 122 years and 164 days, so you are talking about what you don't know.
Zak and Novoselov's claim has been dismissed on the grounds of weak evidence.
Dhirubha Barot clearly you haven’t done your research as she died in 1997 at the age of 122 also you can’t spell
He can't spell but he is correct, it was definitely Yvonne Calment who died, not Jeanne Calment.
They carefully verified the documents of Jeanne Calment but NEVER verified that this lady WAS Jeanne Calment.
Yvonne had motive and opportunity, the family even destroyed old pictures of Jeanne so they couldn't be compared to her pictures when she was old.
Also there were suspicious circumstances around the doctor who verified the death of Yvonne Calment.
A DNA test would definitely show that it is Yvonne Calment in the grave but of course the family would never allow it.
That has been debunked many times. Jeanne Calment was in the 1876 Arles census and more then 20 after.
There is no doubt of her age. You are doing a giant disservice to her.
