I work for a school district in suburban Philadelphia I will mention the zehnder finish barrel. It looks like a pretty easy system. Definitely easier than using a watering can to pour the bona sealer.

Hey there in 2023!
We have used the SPP method as our sole source of abrasion since viewing your videos last year. So far, so good. We have a project coming up that could use your opinion. We have a floor that was finished with oil and now we are converting to a water based finish. Would you recommend using more than an SPP? Something a little tougher? Floor is in good shape and we want to avoid peeling.
If your concerned about it, use a screen! Then next year you should be able to go right back to SPP pads!!
For your brute can poly cart, can I ask the reason for the pvc pipe going up with a cap vs just having the outlet pipe at the bottom?
The PVC pipe is just an extension to operate the valve without having to bend over.

Hi! For standard gym floors, I know you would typically apply the finish following the grain of the wood (north to south etc) - How would you recommend coating a zigzag (V arrangement/ Herringbone/ Chevron ) patterned floor?

Great question! In the case of a Herringbone, Chevron, or Parquet floor, we would still coat the floor in the same direction as the main basketball court. However, depending on where the doors were located (for the close out) we may do it differently. The point is, anyway it’s done you will be going cross grain to some of the flooring.

Great Question, but not easy to answer. We live in a large rural state (Montana) and service customers in several other states. So our pricing structure takes into account distance, size of facility, number of gyms in the district and so on. Historically we have been in the $0.45-$0.55 per sq ft for (1) coat of OMU (oil modified urethane) and $0.55-$0.75 for (2) coats of water based finish.

Using the SPP pads wet with IFT/Squeaky still abrading the floor while you makes passes with it?
We clean the floor with IFT and an SPP pad. We then clean the floor. Lastly we abrade it dry with a SPP pad.

Awesome video may I ask what you guys charge for that service per square foot?
That question is difficult to answer. Lots of variables like type of finish, number of coats, distance from our warehouse & the number & size of gyms we are going to be working on. Our customers are mainly school districts, so these jobs are usually awarded by sealed bid. Typically we are in the $0.50 to $0.75 per sq ft range.
So glad I found this video. I work for a small district in Florida. We’ve had some issues recently with the company recoating our old gym floor. We already employ the SPP pads and square scrub machines throughout the district. I think we can do it. How many buckets of finish did you use on this recoat?
Most finish manufactures recommend an application rate of 500 sq ft per gallon. We find that water based finish usually goes a little further, about 600-700 square ft per gallon.
Take the length X width of your gym and divide by 600. That number is your gallons. Divid that number by 5 to get the number of pails that you need.

Thank you so much. I’m curious if you have ever encountered the problem we are experiencing. Our floors were refinished last year. About 2 weeks later the floors developed a white almost greasy haze. We’ve cleaned and scrubbed but no matter what we do the residue comes back. We’ve been told it’s something called “solvent rain back”
@@32brad91 I am familiar with the term, but have never seen that situation. It maybe related to humidity, but I could not say for sure.
I've watched a few videos now. If I heard correctly, SPP pads would be a 200 grit pad?
I was on 3M's website trying to verify that, but I could not find anything. Other sites say the SPP pad is equivalent to 200-320 grit. In our experience, they do a great job of taking out the floor blemishes, however the scratch's are fine enough that they are easily covered by the finish.

Hey buddy what waterbase urethane are you working with my best of my knowledge all waterbase you were saying tells you not to water it down there's any one brand on the market that I'm aware of and it's poly whey 8 ounces per gallon. Every other thing I work with bona, all basic coding tell you not to water their product down..
Thanks Jason! I suppose we should point out that nothing works everywhere. We are based out of Montana & work the Rocky Mountain West. It’s usually warm & dry or cold & dry. On long runs in a gym floor the finish tends to get sticky and hard to level with-out a small amount of water. This maybe a bad idea in a high humidity environment. Just sharing our methodology.
Doing this now. Are the SPP pads all that you employ? I'm hesitant to use sanding disc (120 grit.) What are your thoughts? Wet work with disc?
Hey Pat, we only use SPP pads, however we use SPP pads on the buffers to get out the heel marks, and really dirty spots. Then we use SPP pads on the square scrubs to abrade the floor. Finally we are cleaning the floor with an auto scrubber that has SPP pads on it. We have used this system exclusively for 6-7 years now & have reduced peeling finish to nearly zero! @Wyoming Wood Floors last question. During the screening process with SPPs we are noticing peeling from previous coats. We employ the same style Bona that you all do. How safe should I feel about proper adhesion? We are following steps listed in video. Just concerned about the peeling. THANKS!
@@patrickficklin It’s tough when you are coming in behind someone who did a poor job. However….. if you are using a high quality 2 component water based gym floor finish (like Bona Supersport HD) that may secure everything down. Ultimately, if a floor has much peeling finish, it will need to be sanded back to raw wood & re painted. We have a recent video about peeling gym floor finish & how we mitigated it.

Yikes! Watched that video. Our issue stemmed from AC shutting off (Louisiana) and students getting back on the floor too quickly. 2nd coat had some peeling areas. We are abrading the surface again today and laying the 24 hour Bona finish. It's minimal peeling thankfully. Fingers crossed we are good. Found you guys by accident but glad I did!
How many coats of finish you manaaged here ? ... 2 or more ? ...
With Water Based finish we usually apply 2 coats of finish.
What grit of did you use on the square sanding machine. I want to take up the old varnish but not mess with my paint.

Surface Preparation Pad.
They are equivalent to 200 grit sandpaper. In our experience, they abrade the floor, but do not damage the paint!
