Surprisingly, I actually like the 420-HC stainless Buck uses in most of its everyday models. Easily sharpened with a very conventional Arkansas stone, durable enough to easily withstand EDC, what's not to like? Modern super-steels come with the need to purchase things like diamond abrasives to get maximum performance and it's nice to have something in my pocket that just ... works.
I was never a fan of Buck knives, even less so these days. It is nice to see them jumping to MagnaCut though. That's a huge improvement over the low to mid grade steels they usually use. People seem shocked by the $175 price tag, but when you're looking at a USA made knife with a premium steel. That's pretty much entry level pricing.
Never been troubled by the steel Buck uses. I'm not as picky about blade steels as others are. Learn to sharpen/Teach a man to fish...Same sort of concept.
I am aware the knife is not 'perfect', but I am still very sad that I missed it. I have a lot of admiration and respect for Larrin's work and the way he shares his knowledge with the knife community. Plus this knife is legal to carry in Germany. Second had prices appear to be about 2x the new price. I guess sometimes we just don't get what we want. Hope guys who got one enjoy and use it.
The fit-and-finish is not what I would expect for a $175 limited edition knife, especially from a respected manufacturer like Buck. But generally I do like the knife and I think I will stick with it.
I couldn’t get my centering to move over it wasn’t rubbing but it was very very close your knife I would have lived with no problem your fit and finish was much better 😊
Great video going over all aspects of the blade. I believe they are a bit overpriced but if it's one you definitely want for your collection, why not!! I'd love it without the billboarding and at $125 price tag. Thanks for sharing!!
That's nice I got the Buck 501 old one still in good condition I seen this one C.J. Buck and that guy you was talking about showed this new one coming out I like it a buck 501 with a clip point blade its a nice looking knife! 😊 👍
You're welcome yeah the regular Buck 501 is 70 to 75 I think on Amazon but them custom knives cost a bit more I like though thanks for sharing it with us! 👌
Great review Thrifty! I'm glad you received one that you were happy with(excluding the slip). It is cool having a slip joint with magnacut steel. I have the tactile Bexar that I received about a week ago for about the same price on sale.
Looks like a great knife, visually very appealing! I’d be tempted with the standard version for sure. But the off-centre printing on that slip for a knife of that price - that’d be enough to trigger me to send it back 😵💫🤯🤣 Great review TK, thanks for sharing 😁
This was my 2nd 501 magnacut with wonky tonk edge. I was hoping they send me a perfect one on the other exchange. I'll try to fix rhe edge tonight with 17 degrees on my worksharp professional precision adjust and see.
Mine came in tuesday and everything was perfect but the wonky edge was wide on the other so i sent it the next morning and called them to send me a good one. The other one I bought came in today and same wonky edge on the other still and blade scratches with tiny hole on the ebony inlay.. just my luck!
Your sample seems better than Pete’s to me. I had already decided to pass on this knife and then saw Pete’s review I felt they could have done better. I do want to see more Magnacut offerings. Thanks for a great review!
Thank you for fair and honest review! 😉 I like the 501 pattern, just for the drop point lockback. Reason I passed on this version. If done in bone or elk the value would have been spot on correct!
It's a nice looking knife. Many of the European Buck like locking knives have one bolster which I like. An expensive locking knife is mostly just a safe queen in this country so I don't buy them, have less expensive ones though.
Nice review. I really like it but not for the price. I like my 501 so I’ll stick with this standard one lol. The back spring on my standard 501 is the same way as your Larin. Sits below the bolster when the blade is closed, but sits flush when the blade is open. I think Buck could’ve done a better job of producing the Larin, but it definitely does look good.
Was looking forward to your review. I agree with you on he negatives. Still a great knife. I don't like that slip much either. I don;t mind the the logo though. Great video buddy! Hopefully Pete gets a better one.
Hey TK 🍻 A very nice piece, overall buddy 👌 I second that with the slip - I'd also expect a better finish. However, a good LE knife, with classic lines, and as much as I would like one, I can not legally carry one in the UK, unfortunately. I'm sure you'll enjoy it, brother John 🫂 Thanks for sharing, Atb Gus 👍
Thanks for the kind words, Gus. It's not the best value knife I've ever gotten for sure. However, it has unique qualities that I admire, so that counts for something. Take care my friend.
Thanks for giving us your honest take on this Larrin Buck knife, I very much enjoyed your presentation. 👍I'd like to get one, but I just blew my entire knife purchasing budget for this month getting a Spyderco Native 5 in cpmMagnaCut as well as a few other recent purchases. Hopefully, I'll be able to get one down the road even if its on the 2ndary market. Excellent review, btw. Take good care my friend and Cheers!
I'm actually a little more tempted by this knife after watching this video. At that price it would severely cut into my Thrifty Kanify "Deal Alert" purchases for a while. Very hansom looking knife. Looks to be the size of the LB5 that was another excellent knife that you alerted me to. Just checked the Buck Website - Sold out
Yes, they seemed to have sold out within the last 24 hours. For a stealth run it took an inordinate amount of time. That tells me it wasn't as popular as many have been. Thanks, Mo.

Real african ebony wood and nickel silver liners and bolsters. I love mine. Worth every penny. My sheath is wonky as well but since it is off to the side it sits better in my pocket.
Hey John, a great review and background information. Looks like you definitely got a better example than Jersey. The price is definitely on the high side but I guess everyone’s free to spend their money how they want 😀, certainly wouldn’t knock anyone for wanting one. I’ve got the regular Squire and it’s a great little knife. Shame about the lack of attention to detail with the etching but guess that’s no big deal. Not a fan of the sheath and the off centring of logo on your example is annoying and sloppy on Buck’s part. Thanks for sharing buddy and hope to catch you on the live 😎👍🏻
Thanks very much Sean. The price was pretty steep even for a stealth run, probably to do with the production of the newly shaped blade and clip slip. The clip slip looks like a first attempt. Maybe they'll better it in the future. Have a great weekend.
A bit steep on the pricing, considering the price difference with the regular 501. Ofcourse Magnacut costs more, but bit on the high end. This one seems to be in good shape, nothing much to complain about except for the clipslip. Now give it a nice clean and put it in the safe John.
Thanks very much Jeroen. It's not going to win any prizes for knife of the year, but I like the unique qualities ot offers and I'm happy with it overall. That slip though...
I think of Buck as a great company to make high quality, mid-priced production knives. I don't think of them as a place to buy a fancy collector's knife. Their operation is based on state of the art machinery designed to make a few specific models. They have a custom shop, but that isn't their main line.
I couldn't ever justify paying $175 for a knife myself. I know everyone is different though. It is a very interesting knife and steel but I could understand expecting flawless fit and finish for that price point.
You know… I had one of these in-cart on the Buck website … I saw Larrins video and immediately went to the site. But before I pulled the trigger, I watched some review videos and haven’t seen ONE video where the knife had good fit and finish. Most of them were basically unacceptable IMO. After the third or fourth video of bad reviews in a row, I deleted the cart. I can’t support an American company who allows this. It’s more or less incompetence. You can't assume the poor run on this knife is indicative to all Buck knives. I think that'd be making a mistake, but good you did research on this one. Thanks, Area51
I’m just now catching up to this video a year later. Knowing what I know now, namely that MagnaCut is available in the Buck custom shop, I certainly *don’t* consider this knife worth the money. $175 will get you a custom shop 110 with the MagnaCut blade and and nicer scales or bolsters…
I’m disappointed with the edge bevels on mine as well. It all feels overpriced despite the collaboration. Idk. Might fix it myself & just be mad about it
I have a standard 501, it has a extremely stiff lock back release, thumb breaking stiff. How is this one (maybe I have a dud) but what I see with yours I think yours is highly overpriced.
PS…. Magnacut is readily available. Tons of models out there running Magnacut. This is absolutely overpriced Magnacut. No matter how you justify it. It’s a tiny, skinny blade and who knows what their HRC and heat treat is. I was excited about this knife and disappointed just as quickly.
Thrifty, you don’t sound very enthusiastic about this knife. I think you have landed a real keeper however and should hang on to it. I think that the biggest updriver on the cost is the ebony wood handles. Ebony has become a sacred and protected wood. Bob Taylor of Taylor guitars as you mentioned was able to secure a quantity of ebony wood from Africa if my memory serves me right. Ebony is the premier wood used for the fingerboards of very high end guitars. I suspect that Taylor Guitars has sold scraps of ebony left over from guitar fingerboard fittings but small enough for knife handles. Just a guess, I have no inside dope. Just the fact that your knife has ebony handles/scales is going to rocket up the value.
Yes, Buck procures left over wood scrap from Taylors by exclusive agreement. I like the knife very much and I'll be keeping it, don't get me wrong. However, I'm less enthusiastic about what I had to pay for it. Thanks, RB.
What's happened to Buck? This is definitely not worth $175. It would be IF: blade were centered, grinds were perfect, grinds didn't hit the choil, back spring was flush with the frame, garish branding. This is an unacceptable price for such quality. If I received that, I'd return it immediately.
175 Bucks! Sorry, just my opinion on it, Not worth 75 Bucks, don't care if its Magnacut or not. Fit and Finish is far more important than what Steel the Blade is made of.
