Great Video - I am trying to connect my gopro 8 to line using my yamaha MG10XU mixer but I cant get it to work been trying for months any ideas what I am doing wrong
If your desk is definitely sending a signal out and you're in line in the GoPro, it should work. What happens if you put the GoPro into the mic modes with the output from the desk? Cheers, Dave.
Greatly appreciated the explanation! This is hands down the best information about the audio settings on the media mod. I've been struggling for few weeks with a wireless lav mic system that can deliver +20db and never tried out the line in settings. All other settings give this terrible static white noise, but line in is crystal clear. It is a bit on quieter side, but as told it can be easily reworked in post.
Hi. I’m glad the video was useful. Yes, if you have a mic with a loud output then using line level for the input is a big help. Line in bypasses some of the dynamics processing that the GoPro applies to the mic and boosted mic modes. Yes, it will be quieter, but gaining it up in your editing software is actually better and will still have less noise. I do this myself with some RODE mics that have a +20db output. Cheers, Dave.
BTW. If you are using video editing or audio software that is VST compatible, there’s a great free limiter plugin called LoudMax that’s super easy to use to gain your audio in post and also limit it. Here’s a video on my vlogging channel about it which may be useful ua-cam.com/video/voW2DSNYF6k/v-deo.htmlsi=5X2bBN86n_BNCDbK Cheers, Dave.
Hi David I’m having a problem with my purple panda mic I’ve plugged into my GoPro 9 media mod. The mic is very sensitive, it picks up every sound , how do I turn down the sensitivity? Thanks
Hey hi David. I'm not seeing the line in in the audio setting on my go pro with media mod.. None of the options are showing up and it just shows media mod.. How do I plug in mixer out.please help. Thanks
Hi,excellent video,I have an external mic with the adapter on a hero 8 black, doing audio from near the exhaust with a mic like your example on the right hand side for the standard mic am I right that standard mic is then the best setting for me
Living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania >Make sure the plug on your mic only has two ‘bands’ on it..if it has three it won’t work on a GoPro. I know this from experience with my Hero7 Black. I have a mic with three bands and it works fine on my laptop for narrations. I hope this helps! If you need an external lapel mic with the TWO bands just search on Amazon [to be used with your particular device] as they’re quite cheap. See ya.
does go pro have audio limiter inside the camera or the adapter ?, let say my mic is to sensitive inside my helmet, can go pro adjust the peak or it will distort ?.
It’s very good at avoiding clipping, it’s weird it’s as if it alters it’s preamp gain to avoid distortion. If your helmet mic distorts at the capsule then the AGC/limiter in the GoPro can’t do anything about that.
@@DavidHarry im not that understand with audio actually, i use sena as mic, when im communicate with my wife via sena, sound is okay, no distortion, but when i record my chat using smartphone then i can hear sometimes distort in letter H, or S and R i think. so not all sound distort. i dont know if go pro will fix my problem, and thank you very much for answering my question, im gonna sub to your channel, i hope you the best with your channel, GBU.
Hi Karel. Unfortunately I’m not familiar with sena, so can’t give any advice. Is it a mic or brand? The one thing that I can say about the mic input on GoPros, be that the Media Mod or mic adaptor, they are very good at avoiding distortion. With words that that have a strong letter S for instance, this could be sibilance or words with a strong P or B, this could be plosives. Both sibilance and plosives are mostly caused by the microphone itself and how it responds to certain voices and words/letters. Don’t forget, if any type of distortion appears at the microphone itself, there’s nothing you can do about that as the audio/dialogue will be already distorted before any recording device uses its microphone input. If you go to www.GoPro9.com that will take you to my Hero8 playlist, I have a lot of GoPro videos and you may find some of them useful. I also do a lot of videos about microphones, check out my RODE Microphones playlist there may also be some useful stuff in there. Stay safe. Cheers, Dave.

And when trying to select front/back mic in presets the word "stereo" in grey is all I have.. Do you have any idea what could be wrong? Thanks for the video and clear explanation.

I just received the basic gopro usb-c mic adaptor and it is seemingly not what i need. for example, i had the camera mounted on the outside of the car, and the external mic in the car in order to avoid the outside wind noise and only get the sound inside the car. no dice. completely blown out as before since it's then using both mics. do you know if use the media mod if it will cancel the camera (and mod's ) mics if i simply plug in a non-powered mic in to the 3.5mm jack?
Hi Chris. The video was about the 8 and before the 9 so nothing about the 9 would have been mentioned. I doubt your GoPro was actually using the adaptor, check my videos there’s one explaining that very problem about the 9 not seeing the mic adaptor. Cheers, Dave.
Chris. Did you upgrade the software on the 9 after you bought it? If it has the original software then it would see the adaptor but I don't know what it done with it as I didn't test it before updating. After updating it definitely does not see the adaptor, GoPro deliberately deactivated it with the first update. If you are on the original software you also wont be getting the proper stabiliser functions on the 9, these only came after updating, which stopped the adaptor working. GoPro really have messed up with the 9. Cheers, Dave.
Hey David, awesome vid thanks. I am using Rode Videomic Pro (not plus) and I am just clicking it in and the audio is total garbage. Would you use Powermic/powermic + options? Also on the mic itself there is buttons and options what would you set it up to? Thanks
Hi Asten. If you’re unable to change the mic settings it may suggest that your interface isn’t talking with the GoPro or maybe there’s a problem with the mic cable. Are you using the Media Mod or Mic Adaptor? Does it record anything from your external mics? Cheers, Dave.
@@DavidHarry hi mate, I've just purchased the Media MOD and tried to use it testing the audio with this and attaching the Rode Video Micro to the media MOD but nothing. It still doesn't let me change the mic option from Stereo in the menu. Have you come across this issue at all? Thanks Dave.
Hi Asten. I’m not sure what the latest firmware is for the GoPro but whatever it is can you make sure you are on it. Or are you already on the latest one? Cheers, Dave.
Hi. Yes, if you check my videos with the GoPro and Wireless Go, this is what I do and it sounds great. The only problem I have is that I have a loud voice and I can clip/distort the built in mic on the Wireless GO or overload it’s capsule. When I use the Lavalier GO with it, it’s really clean especially when I conceal the Lav and attach it to my chest using Rycote Undercovers. Cheers, Dave.
@@DavidHarry and when you've used the wireless go under the "Line-in" settings, you concealed it as well and left the DB gain at 0 on the rode wireless go itself?
@@DavidHarry I also am really taking a liking to using lav mics. I love the audio quality we get from them. I was filming yesterday with the rode lav mix, and the pop voice lav mic. I can't wait to get into the editing to see the difference in sound
Hi. Like I said, I have a loud voice so don’t need as much gain :) Plus, if I’ve ever used the GoPro in its standard mic mode I wouldn’t have used any gain from the source. Cheers, Dave.
Thank you David for taking the time to go through this very essential audio input menu system on the GoPro Hero 8 Black. I think I will simply use either my Saramonic MK II or my nice Beachtek DXA-Micro-Pro Line or Mic level Microphone pre-amp/adaptor/mixing box with that menu set to Line In on the GoPro. The Beachtek gives you -12 and +4 dB gain settings on your Mic inputs, plus allow multiple microphone connections and mixing with simultaneous monitoring in either ful Mono or Stereo mode. In theory, this way you could use form of Mic or Line level inputs and get a decent track on the GoPro.
Hi Mark. You are absolutely welcome buddy. If you can utilise your Beachtek in the signal chain with the GoPro in line level, you’re going to get an absolutely fantastic recording and something that’s probably indistinguishable to a standalone audio recorder. In fact, I may do a test of the line input comparing it to the quality of using a DAW with a USB interface, I think that’d be quite interesting in spite of the AAC codec used in the GoPro. BTW. It’s been a while now but I used to use something with my old DV cameras before getting a Sony PD150 which had XLR inputs. We used to call it a beach box, so I assume this’d have been a two channel Beachtek of some description, I also had something called a Juicedlink, I think that was the manufacturers name. How things have changed, the audio on this video is my Sennheiser ME64 connected via an XLR to 3.5mm jack cable straight into my Sony FDR-AX100 via its 3.5mm jack input. The sound I get from my Sony’s 3.5mm mic input is awesome. It’s analogue to digital converter and preamp are just fantastic for such a small camera and as it records uncompressed audio there is simply now difference between using it and an external recorder. I’ve never understood why many people go to the extremes of external recorders and re-syncing in post, when they’ve probably never tried to maximise the input on their camera first with something like a Beachtek or a mic that has a good output. Cheers, Dave.
Hi Dave. Great review and really makes a lot of sense. Looking for help if you can. I have the GoPro 8 and i also use a ZEDi 10 mixer going out to my surface pro 7 (via surface pro dock). I have the GoPro working fine and HDMI to tv etc... However, i have a external Sennheiser mic that i use through the mixer and i cant get it to work through the GoPro. Essentially, all i am wanting to do is allow the GoPro to record video and my mic to voice over for my online fitness classes. I have taken a 3.5 input lead from the docking station to the GoPro and changed it to line in but still no joy! Any help would be great.
Thanks for sharing this one David, still waiting for my media mod to turn up so not had a chance to really play with my GP8. At the moment I've only go a basic Boya by mmm Mic but will soon be investing in either a Rode video Mic pro plus or the Rode video Mic NTG. Best wishes Jon
Hi Jon. You are very welcome. I’d be careful with the VideoMic NTG if you’re gonna be recording close to your sound sources, for instance vlogging or getting close to someone or something with loud voices or sounds. It doesn’t seem to handle higher SPLs very well. While it’s technically better than the Pro+ and has some extra functions, the Pro+ handles louder sounds that are closer better. It’s something that I’ve noticed with my voice as it is loud. The NTG sounds great but the Pro+ may be better suited to close mic dialogue vloggy stuff or louder than usual recording scenarios. It’s just something to bear in mind. Cheers, Dave.
@@DavidHarry Hi Dave thanks for the advice, just watched Ian Craig's video about the NTG so I think I'll be taking you guys advice and getting the pro plus. Best wishes Jon
Hi Jon. Yes, Ian has done a load of recordings as well and has come to the same conclusion. Me and Ian talk to each other a lot and have discussed this one at great length. Like I said, the NTG has the advantage in a number or ways and I really like its build and functions, it does have a nice clean gain stage, but it’s a bit tricky being close to the louder sound sources. If you were recording nature sounds or some other similar atmospheric stuff then I’d immediately recommend it between the two but the closer, louder sound sources are better dealt with by the Pro+ The thing is that the NTG is updatable via software and if the issue I’ve mentioned is to do with impedance, this may well be sortable with an update if the impedance matching of the NTG can be altered in software. Before I do my next tests with the NTG and GoPro, I’ll see if there’s been another software update for the NTG and try it. I’ll try and do that test soon and in it I’ll do a quick comparison with the Pro+ Cheers, Dave.
Thanks for this vid, very informative. I have gopro 7 black paired with Rode Wireless go 2. I find too much background hiss when in a quite room and not speaking. However, in Linein mode its totally clear with no hiss at all and my voice sounds low prob same as standard mic setting and powered mic mode with -15db on the wireless go 2. But I must say my voice is clear which I suppose can be corrected in post

Being a massive Joy Division fan and a fan of Factory Records, I have an unhealthy appreciation for Manchester :) Cheers, Dave.
@@DavidHarry I'm using rode wireless go. How I understand, better to switch to liner mode and increase to 20db on microphone it's self. Than it will much better sound on post production. Is this correct?
Hi. The best thing to do is to try it out and test the difference between line and mic. For people with loud voices, like me, gaining up at the RODE and then having the GoPro in line level is the best way and is cleaner. If you are recording someone who has a low, soft or quiet voice you may have to use the mic level at the GoPro as their voice may not be enough to drive the input enough even if the RODE is at its loudest output into the GoPro in line level without having to gain too much in post with your editing software. Cheers, Dave.
I have a BOYA BY-MM1, in Standard Mode this Mic is too hot, easily sound clipping happen when I record indoors. My Rode Wireless Go works like a charm on Line Mode, but with Rode medium gain settings that’s too hot, works well in lower gains.
Hi. Yes, the GoPro input can be quite loud if the mic is too sensitive or loud. As you’ve said, any mic that has a strong output can maybe sound better in line in mode, I do the same with my Wireless GO. Cheers, Dave.
@@DavidHarry Unfortunately the BY-MM1, which is similar to the Rode Video Mic, does not work in other modes, do you have any tips for an attenuator cable for sale on Aliexpress? Here in Brazil these Chinese sites are easier to buy.
Hi. I don’t use Aliexpress so don’t know what they have. If you can solder you can use a 10K resistor either in line or bridged at the mic capsule or at the socket or the same with a cable. Cheers, Dave.
@@DavidHarry thanks for the info, i will try to make this cable, soldering is not a problem, i will test if this 10k resistor does the job, or if i need a bigger one.

Cheers, Dave.
so when in live mode, is it stereo, and not mono, i really need stereo@@DavidHarry
Sub’ed now I’ve found you. Just the info I was looking for
Thank you David!
Good information. Thank you
You are welcome 👍
Great video! Easy to follow and understand
Thanks, I'm glad you liked the video, hopefully it was useful.
New subscriber from philippines! Thanks david!
Thanks for sharing this one David, still waiting for my media mod to turn up so not had a chance to really play with my GP8. At the moment I've only go a basic Boya by mmm Mic but will soon be investing in either a Rode video Mic pro plus or the Rode video Mic NTG.
Best wishes
Jon
Best wishes
Jon
Can we have this translated into Kings English please?
Thank you, much appreciated video
Thank you.
Ahh forgot to mention I can't use a lavalier on the wireless go 2 on line in setting it has to be the other settings
thanks so much for the info...
Any time!
Very useful for gopro thank you so much 🙏 for this tutorial.
So I'm guessing select "Back" and then Select whatever Mic option you need for me its Standard. Be nice if this thing came with directions.
Hi. Not only is there a lack of directions from GoPro but they even get their descriptions wrong on the mic/audio menu pages. Cheers, Dave.
Great explanation, precise and very clear..thankyou, I'm Mike G, take care, and goodbye now
Hi Mike. You are very welcome buddy. I’m David Harry, thank you for watching this video, take care and goodbye now :) Cheers, Dave.
Great info! Thanks.
Hi. You are very welcome. Cheers, Dave.
Great clip and really well explained, just got mod and was confused by menu. I even like the accent and I am from Manchester! (Lancastrian though not Manc!). Thanks will look at your other videos.
Nice one John, thanks. Although I’m a Scouser I don’t have any problems with Mancs :) When I was a teenager I was more into the Manchester bands as opposed to the Liverpool ones. Being a massive Joy Division fan and a fan of Factory Records, I have an unhealthy appreciation for Manchester :) Cheers, Dave.
Thanks Harry
You are very welcome. Cheers, Dave.
Thanks ☺️👍

Thanks for the video. I have a question, When I plug in my external mic to media mod and I cannot hear my voice, I only hear the noise sound. This is the mic I bought on Amazon: www.amazon.com/PoP-voice-Microphone-Omnidirectional-Smartphones/dp/B075VQ7VG7/ref=sr_1_6?dchild=1&keywords=pop+microphone&qid=1589504356&sr=8-6
