    It seems that electric yachts are silent, emit no noxious fumes, have little or no vibration...but can be terribly slow.
    Sialia has changed that stereotype completely by creating a yacht that is capable of speeds in excess of 26 knots. This video shows the people behind the brand, and the ideas behind their products!

    Looks to be an ideal size for weekends/week trips across the Med to Corsica. What would be the range in 'Normal' mode? I am guessing the the variable Genset onboard it might be unlimited (depending on fuel). I am Deeply impressed and I love this new 'going electric' trend. Just to be able to hear you speak at normal level while doing 26 knts is amasing.

    From an engineering point of view it's difficult to establish the note worth specifications, hence the omission of the all important 'range'. However from a yachting perspective as heavily emphasised in this video it's mostly about quieter cruising. I like that the engineers were aware that this is not 'eco friendly' 👍

    Very nice looking boat. Is there stabilisers? The hull is not big enough to accommodate solar panels so I'm guessing the idea is to charge the batteries with shore power and top up if / when necessary from the onboard generator. It's great to see such innovation, and I'd also like to mention silent yachts, pioneering such technology.

    While i am a proponent of electric drive technology for yachts i think it's folly to think that the public or state electric grid should be used or relied upon. yachts must generate their own power to be ultimately viable and acceptable. the use of ultra-lite but strong and hard wearing new materials will be absolutely necessary rather than the currant marble-leather-metal-fiberglass. of course it all must begin with the foundations of a good and proper boat. a beautiful boat and the right direction, bravo.

  • @TheKontraRecords
    @TheKontraRecords 7 місяців тому +1

    Me, Engineer myself, can't see the point. technical yes, its an electric driven boat, but if it was so great, they would not have to size the range extender so big, it would drive the vessel by itself. Range extender are designed to let the vehicle (of any kind) go a little further or power subsystems so that the main motor/engine can concentrate its efficiency to accelerate itself. So they have a combustion engine that can power the ship along without the hybrid system. More efficient yes, since and electric motor has less losses and does work at its most efficient state more often ... but that's no news at all.. What I don't get, is why they built a vessel, electric push and huge (industry) batterie with great EMS in mind, but no Solar power whatsoever. It would impress if they did a system that had solar panels on the roof, and a (lets call it) "seakeaper plus" turning the boat on the coordinates to always face the sun, so that the panels can charge the batteries at optimal speeds the whole day. ... I would be astonished if they had invented a super efficient way to use solar panels to charge the batterie while at anker and power it at lets they 5 knots cruising speed. If you need more or just started from shore with a full set, than go faster... Wow would have been so cool.
    by the way: not polluting the air is an argument, but I think yacht owners that operate their luxury In the fresh and windy sea ... don't care about having "NoX fumes" "around" them... Haven't heard one owner complain about having bad air quality around his 5 Million Dollar/Euro/Pound sea home.
    As much as I love researching and trying to maximize something with technology and innovation. From what the video tells me about it, I really can't work out, why it took them over ten years, and how this idea is presented as game changing, since their are boats out their having the solar idea used, cars are doing it for around two decades nowadays. From a scientific point of view it's really not that big of a deal.
    But, and that's important I wish them best of luck in selling this, maybe I'm the odd one out here... and someday, someone will explain the genius behind it.

    • @GoodkatNW

      Per previous interviews, up to 200nm of range at 8kn, 174 at 18kn, and full recharge from generator in under an hour. 200nm range is with a 1000kwH pack versus the 800. I presume most owners will charge at the dock and probably not ever hit 100+ miles, but it doesn't sound bad at all going from 0-100% in ~45min, you could easily do that while stopped for lunch and only use a couple gallons of diesel.

      @GoodkatNW Рік тому

      @@jstefa2 Just quoting from their interviews and website, and yeah the recharging of full pack in that time period does look super unlikely. What's interesting is that David mentioned a full recharge in 45 minutes, but I don't see that claim on their website. Perhaps a misunderstanding, as their site says "sustained cruising at 16 knots" with the diesel range extender, which entails something like a 20-30kw generator. I was VERY far off with my diesel estimate, for some reason I was thinking of the usual ~20ish kwh generator which typically consumed about 0.5-1.5gal/hour depending on load. With a 1mwh battery though, that's like 50 hours of charge time from the generator alone, lol.
      They state their motors are 400kW apiece, so 800kW = 1072hp, or 536hp apiece (1kW = ~1.3hp I believe), which does seem reasonable for their claimed performance.
