Love the vid, but rather than multiplying by 8/9, I would add half of the actual 29th Feb birthdays (since you actually don't do 50/50 between 28th Feb and 1st Mar this way), nitpicky ik xd
Yeah, upon rewatching the video, I think you're right about this! I originally didn't add half of Feb29's birthdays because Feb29 had 10,462 births, which is pretty far from the expected 1/4 the counts of typical days (which had ~11,000). But I realized the website is counting people born per day regardless of year, so we just gotta divide Feb29's count by 4, giving us 2,615! New leaderboard: Mar 1: 11,129 + 2,615/2 = 12,436 Feb 28: 11,053 + 2,615/2 = 12,360 Sep 9: 12,301 The gap is incredibly narrow now, but Mar 1 still wins 😱😲
Great video Cary, but…… what about people who get held back a year or skip a year? It’s a small amount but I feel like you could include that chance into your calculations for middle school cohorts.
Oh yeah, you're right about the middle schoolers who get held back! There could easily be a 15-year-old 8th grader born on Feb 29th. But I suppose that last section of the video is only considers what the majority of students are like. It overlooks all the edge cases, such as students were get held back or skip forward (as you said), or students who are homeschooled, or international schools with different year-systems, etc.
March 1st, 1919 was also actually when Koreans' 삼일절 (Sam-il jeol) where there was a big protest for independence from Japan, marching down streets holding Korean flags, which led to a big help in the Korean independence 30+ years later, so Koreans have a holiday that day to commemorate the people who risked their lives to take part in this movement, and on that day Korean citizens would hang Korean flags at their balconies to show their respect.
Another fun fact: Today is also the anniversary of "BFDI 3: Are You Smarter Than a Snowball" (The episode where Match slapped Bubble for being called "guys") and it's 17 days before the Birthday of the Huang twins! 🥳
Yeah, I was thinking about uploading this to carykh! But then I thought "this video is unscripted, so it shouldn't go there." But then again, in 2016 i would upload rambles to carykh too, so hmmm....
3:26 I know what the implication is here, but even if we take people born on the very last day of September, then rewinding 280 days (approximately the average human gestation period), we’re put all the way back in December. In fact, if a pregnancy begins any later than January 15 and ends with birth in September, the baby in question is considered preterm. And we all know that we were shooting for quite a bit later than that.
1:02 wrong, because years are leap years if they are divisible by 4 and not divisible by 100 except if its divisible by 400, so march 1st 1900 would be 4 years away from the leap years before and after it
Another great video Cary nice work I’m not soo smart at all in math so 1/2 of the equations don’t make sense. I guess I did just do an equation though XD
Um actually Cary, 1902 was even and indivisible by 4, but that wasn’t equidistant between two leap years, so your claim doesn’t add up at all! For shame, Cary.

bro, i love how this is my birthday
Wow its real interesting, i wonder if you looked at the data over the years first and then tried to piece back why march 1st is like that
If somebody was born march first and it became a leap year the next year wouldn’t their ACTUAL birthday be February 29 since it replaces that day?
Dang I never knew nice work explaining it all Cary!
happy birthday Mark Foster from Foster the People!

leap year babies that celebrate on march first are celebrating the farthest day away from their actual birthday
lol i thought you were gonna talk how on march 1st there's a romanian holiday called mărțișor, but this is way better
I think the other channel’s name Carykh might mean “Cary (Middle Initial?) Huang”

When you only get older every 4 years:
