That is truly one of the most magical scenes in all of film history. Everyone who first saw this back in the summer of 1984 was ready to start Karate classes the next day! 😆🤣😂😛👊

I absolutely love the look on Daniel's face at the end of the scene when he realizes he's been training the entire damn time. Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita were so good in this.

These training methods were normal traditionally in Karate, Kungfu schools for hundreds of years. It's not just about "learning the moves".
It's all about toughening up both physically and mentally. There are lots of "Shaolin Temple" themed movies with similar training methods. It may seem like menial work at first but it's much more than that. For the student, it shows a total commitment, focus and trust in the process. What's great about the story is that Miyagi is not merely teaching Daniel to fight. He is teaching him to be a man in every action he takes. It's about honor, respect, discipline, mercy, compassion, justice, truth. Also, the martial arts in these movies are not the usual totally unrealistic "super fighter" moves. Very practical application of technique.

Muscle memory, hard work, dedication, strengthening, conditioning, and patience... all the things that make a great martial artist. Sure it may be unconventional, but it's not unrealistic.

Ironically the KID (Ralph Macchio) is now older than Mr Miyagi (Pat Morita) was at the time of the film, but still looks younger.

They weren't only exercises. They were also tests. Was Daniel worth the effort to train? Did he have committment and determination? Not only did he not quit day after day, he did a thorough job at the best of his ability with every task.

    • @jackiestow4294

They weren't exercises at all. They were chores. He was told paint the fence. Wax the floor that's not an exercise. Any American housewife? Tell you that it's a chore. And he was told to do chores

@@jackiestow4294 Did you watch the movie? They were pretenses to make him go through the motions of blocking.
And the reveal was that the audience thought they were only chores until this scene that revealed they were exercises too.

Also remember that Miyagi is like the father Daniel never had and Daniel is like the son Miyagi never had. 2 people from different cultures who became a tighter "family" than a lot of families are these days.

I remember seeing this movie in the theater with my soon to be wife when it came out. Everyone in the theater was very surprised by this reveal, that things actually were not as they seemed. I believed 100% that what I was watching was very possible. We loved this movie. Then, in 1994, my wife and I started taking Karate lessons for 4 years. It was in the Dojo that I learned everything in that film was BS. It made for a good movie though for those who have no actual training, and that is what fictional movies are all about.

The writer of the movie said he wanted to show that a good teacher could teach you without you realizing you're being taught. He was a practitioner of Goju-Ryu (the style of Karate Mr. Miyagi practices) so he came up with chores for Daniel to do that resembled the blocking techniques he wanted him to learn. To be honest (as a karate instructor myself) it would have been better and more practical to just teach Daniel the techniques from the start, so I think Mr. Miyagi primarily just wanted his chores done.
There is a precedent for the practice of a teacher making a new student do chores in real karate, but it wasn't really to covertly teach them techniques; traditionally, in pre-1900's Okinawa, if someone wanted to learn Karate there were no schools and karate sensei (teachers) taught in their backyard gardens and only had a few students, so you'd have to go to their homes to inquire about being taught. But before you did that you needed a guarantor of sorts, someone of high social status and good character (like a government official, administrator in the school system, a member of the royal family, etc) to agree to come with you to his house, greet the teacher, introduce you to him, ask him on your behalf to take you as a student, and then vouch for you and your character. That way if you misused the skills he taught you and you injured or killed someone you shouldn't have and brought shame on the teacher, he could turn and blame the guarantor for giving him a bad student and save his reputation (honor).
After being accepted the teacher would often give you a series of strengthening exercises to do and then put you to work doing chores in his garden or home to test your character and commitment, because if you weren't worth the effort (couldn't handle pain and hard work) he wouldn't waste his time with you. The chores were more so he could see your character and how hard you worked first hand before putting effort into you and not a cool covert teaching method, the writer of the movie just thought it made Mr. Miyagi look wise and cool.
Back then karate was serious business because before 1900 karate wasn't like you see today, a sport where you bounce on your toes and do fancy spin kicks; back then the old karate was a close-in brutal fighting system with no fancy bs. They used to say, "karate no tame desu korosu," which means, "karate is for killing." When Japan modernized karate was thought to be too brutal for the new modern Japan (who basically just wanted to promote karate as a way to get young men in shape so they'd be suitable for military service) so between 1900-1920 karate was changed to be a sport and many teachers (but not all) started passing down the lessons but leaving out the fighting applications. The real old school karate is still out there being taught just not many teach it.
Also in real karate you shouldn't "always look eye," the Miyagi magic hand rub thing is made up for the movie (just a warm compress and massage), and you never block with just one hand/arm, you always block with two hands.

Great reactions... one of the most iconic scenes ever. The seriousness, and then humor of Pat Morita really nails this scene. For the part, Pat had to literally create a English-speaking Japanese accent,... because English is his first language! (born & grew up in California).

This is a classic trope of the Kung Fu movies. The master teaches the students by getting them to do a bunch of shitty tasks. In 80s Hollywood California they only have to work for a few days, in ancient China (1970s Hong Kong cinema) they have to work for years and the Master is allowed to beat the crap out of them.
The 36 Chambers of Shaolin (1978 Shaw Brothers) are straight up torture chambers.
