    NICE! Back in the DAY - 1986 - as a foreign (American) student I went to the university computer cluster, printed out some maps on the brand new dot matrix printer, and took off for a very similar ride out to the Campsie Fells. No electronics, no prior experience riding outside the city, no "common sense." I rode all day (Puch steel frame w some lovely Campy upgrades) and into the evening: one of the absolute best rides I have ever taken...and it was so excellent to be reminded of the overall area and many tiny details in your video. Thank you.

    What side the brakes are on is because in places like Scotland you indicate with your arm off the handlebars when turning right(roundabouts, across lanes and traffic) so its safer to have the back brake on your left hand as its more controlled in those situations.

    • @Gabrielle4870
      @Gabrielle4870 3 роки тому

      So you don't indicate turning left?

    • @jasperverkuijl

    • @swites
      @swites 3 роки тому

      @@Gabrielle4870 Not all the time even though I should, as turning traffic has to give way regardless if you're going straight ahead or turning left( when riding on the left).

      @swites 3 роки тому

      @@jasperverkuijl Just my understanding. It is the law in NZ that you must have the front brake on the right hand side of a bicycle and motorcycle for example. Which is thought to be safer( which I would agree with). So there is some reasoning behind it.

    The Tak Ma Doon descent is almost as little fun as the ascent!! Blind summits and corners, adverse cambers, pot holes and oncoming traffic on a single track road. But, on a clear day, the view from the car park at the top is phenomenal.

      @@jasperverkuijl Depends on your definition of close! You could do a really nice loop from the centre of Glasgow that would include it - but it would be 180km and 2500m. Alternatively, there's a train station about 4km from the bottom (1.5hr train from Glasgow), which would allow you to access some of the best roads in the south of Scotland. Well worth it.
      There's plenty of good riding to be had accessed from train stations around Scotland and the North of England. If you fancied sticking around for a couple of weeks, you would never get bored (of the rain, maybe).

      @@jasperverkuijl good! Keep it like that. I've broken two bones and I've only been riding for 5 years, and racing for 2. How come experienced and elite racers never get injured but amateur weekend warriors do? :/ not fair :p

    Where TF is Glasgaow? 😁 Welcome to the alternative dimension where drivers try to kill you, the road conditions are more off-road and the cycling infrastructure is a worn out white line on a road. If it wasn't for the scenery then I'd suggest escaping back home ASAP from this cycling hell. Cyclists in the NED don't realise how lucky they are. I think I've gone to heaven when I'm over there.

    Jasper when 2 random cyclist meet and try to ride together, there's always one with much lesser fitness that will have to work much harder.. HE had less fitness than you right?
