These are very good tips! I feel that people should try to visit and experience a place for a few days to a week before deciding to move to a particular place. That way people can learn the basics about the area and also see if the destination is a good fit. Of course, some people may not have that luxury too. Great video!

I completely agree that it is a luxury. It's like a head-start to moving if you can do it! But also, I really feel that you'll know quickly if it feels right 😊

Love your videos Jess, you're doing it so well and I recognize so much from living in London. When you said 'knowing which shops to buy what items', I just agreed with you out loud, haha. These simple things nobody understands are difficult when you're an expat!!

Thanks so much! I find that the "big" things are almost easier because you know they will be an issue. But then you need ant traps and no clue where to buy them 🤣

For sure good tips! Amsterdam is not the typical Dutch city because of the enormous amount of tourists and expats. So there are more tourist traps and some are down right scams! Is Groupon still alive in Amsterdam? In Belgium it is pretty much dead! They do not often give an offer that is worth the money in my humble opinion (yes with a few exceptions).

Tourist traps are such an issue. I think the city is slowly trying to do something about them! We do still have Groupon but it's been a while since I've used it. There aren't many great deals, but I have seen some gems!

@@aWanderlustForLife biggest tourist traps are the money exchange companies. Go to a real bank to get the best rates and lowest fees. The bank offices in the arrivals hall at Schiphol airport are open 24/7 and a short walk from the airport train station.

Thanks! For the Facebook groups, it really depends on what you are looking for. I don't have specific ones to recommend but just search "expats in Amsterdam" for a general one, then go from there!

Glad to have you back! 😊 Amsterdam still wants tourists...just ones that don't cause issues and really want people to appreciate the city.

Thanks so much for your insightful video! It is awesome! I'm an American who lives in England but now moving to The Netherlands with my married European partner. Do you know how long it takes to get your Netherlands residence permit?

When I did it, they gave themselves 6 months do deal with the application. I got mine around 4 months (this was 7 years ago). But you get a visa in your passport for that time period.of course this is all from my experience in 2014.

How much would a surgery to the knee would cost?

    • @jwenting

Depends on what needs doing and what your insurance package is.
Depending on that it might be fully covered, minus the yearly treshold of a few hundred Euro that everyone has to pay in healthcare cost (for most people with chronic conditions that goes towards our medication and regular checkups a few tens of Euros a month, for incidental patients it can be a rude 400 Euro one time hit).
