My first ever and only Miata is a ‘13 Club soft top in pearl white and I just love the car. I could grab a new one but I honestly like my NC better. I don’t care much about the tech upgrades with the ND’s, RF’s or the ‘24. My NC sort of reminds me of my of my old ‘69 TR6 Triumph. I bought the NC in 2021 and just don’t see myself parting with it anytime soon.

The difference in weight between an NC3 club with a manual and an ND3 RF with a manual is less than 100 lbs. Some NCs are just above 2,500lbs, all the soft top NCs are below 2,600lbs. The ND RFs are listed between 2450 and almost 2, 500 (auto I would imagine). The ND soft top with a manual is under 2,400lbs. So the weight differences are significant but not super big. That the ND has as many features it has and weighs what is does is impressive. Honestly true of the NC also since it is more spacious inside and a little bigger all around and still very light. Both pretty amazing for modern vehicles that are relatively affordable. I do love hydraulic steering but don't remember feeling it all that much in the NC the one time I drove it. Missed the steering feel in a ND2 I spent a lot of time in but it was still great overall. I haven't driven a stock NB but I drove a highly modified one that was a blast on curvy mountain roads. All depends on how fresh the suspension components and tires are in terms of feel. Have driven two different NAs, a tired one that felt pretty bad and a dialed in one that was a blast. I would say that the NC and ND will be more fun on a mountain where you need a bit more power just to get going.

Agreed, any Miata is a great choice. Mine is a 2007 NC manual. I've turned it into a little beast with the extra power this car has always deserved. The driving experience has been transformed. I would highly recommend all of the upgrades I've made: 2.5 litre engine swap, coil overs, full 2.5 inch Roastersport exhaust including exhaust manifold, and wider rims (17x8) with 225-45/17 tires. Such an amazing transformation. Fell in love with my car all over again. Sway bars and alignment are next upgrades.

Modern muscle car driver for the last 20 years… always was tempted by light weights. The ND RF looking like it did and being convertible pushed me over the edge. I use it as a daily driver. I went with 10kg front 4kg rear Feals. But I live on a mountain with hard turns every single day. It’s not too bad but if you go with stiff coilovers it needs to have a quality actual shock system that’s adjustable. Otherwise a quality softer coilover like you have is nice too. I have some bracing and it made it very feel able on each wheel. Good review.

You asked about mod suggestions... Assuming your 2024 MX-5 is new, or still has some warranty remaining (if used), drive it stock until you learn all you can about it. Early mods may void your warranty. Also, you may find your taste in mods differs from your friends, plus your mod options may increase as your vendors learn more and finer tune their offerings. Once you buy into a mod, you are stuck with it until you update (junk) it. Finally, while you may consider the car a "blank canvas", it is what it is for lots of time-tested engineering reasons. Inserting a seemingly innocent mod might impact other car parts negatively. Imagining you can out smart experienced engineers who have been fine tuning things for (say) 30+ years... well, show some hubris. My 2 cents... M 🥴
BTW: I have a 2015 NC3 GT PRHT Jet Black Mica garage queen. My mods are tires and touch points.... love it. 🔥🔥🔥

I don't think the ND has nearly as much space as the NC tbh. Especially passenger legroom in the ND is very limited, there is no glove box, and the trunk is smaller. It's more the tech that the ND has, that makes it in some ways a bit more convenient, like the Matrix LEDs. In other ways, the ND has already to much tech...

Not a true comparison as you did an NC Club soft top to a ND3 RF Club. Weight penalty for the RF is over 110 pounds. I drove a 2016 Club soft top in the Brembo brakes / BBS wheels configuration for 7+ years as my daily. Ordered & bought an 2024 Club soft top with the BBR package - so except for the Recaro seats basically the same car. Don't know why you keep saying the ND1 is not a car competitive to an ND3 ? The 2016 had plenty of torque down low & added an active exhaust system from Flying Miata. My 2016 Club felt as fast as my new 2024 Club. That active exhaust system gets added to my 2024 Club on Monday ( doing the install myself just like I did to the 2016 Club ). My 2016 Club was every bit as quick as this new one with the extended rev range.

Interesting comparison thank you. But I must say, after researching Miatas/MX5s as a possible replacement for my aging Mini R53; the overwhelming takeaway from the UA-cam reviews I’ve seen including this one is that the stock version of any Miata generation will be a disappointment in handling terms. It’s just a shame the car isn’t more competent out of the box, maybe with the ‘Sporty’ options actually being more sporty. The ‘new’ Mini in 2002 came in 3 suspension set-ups: normal, Sports, and Sport +, and there’s a huge difference between them. I’d stump up for a ‘24 ND3 but the hassle of modding a new car is off putting. (I’ve sampled an NC3 and it was too wallowy; haven’t driven a stock ND yet, so when I do it’s possible I’ll change my view)

Even in stock form the ND3 is a great handling car. It's set up from the factory as a GT car and it's sold to a wide variety of buyers including retired grandmas who want a fun little roadster. The wonderful thing Mazda has done here is that they intentionally made it very easy to make it a much more serious car. A good set of coilovers, and a performance alignment alone make the ND3 a very serious canyon car. Not a lot of money for a huge return. I own a Cooper S and while it's a fun car, it doesn't hold a candle to my ND3.

Agree with your review. I think they went backwards with the ND. The Miata was always a second fun car/drivers car and a lot the changes for the ND sacrificed that for the sake of daily drive ability. But the Miata isn’t really DD-able anyway so it ends up just making the car worse.

I have to ever so slightly disagree with you. Have been in an ND collectively for 4 years now as a daily. Went from ND1 to a Bimmer M2C then back to an ND2. This time I went with a GT(S) ND2 because I still wanted some creature comforts of the BMW since I was spoiled and honestly don’t miss the BMW except for the power. Daily use in the Miata is perfect for me. The Sport trim is great for those not looking for creature comforts. I’m willing to wager that the ND is the best selling Miata. Is it the best Miata? Eh, that depends… I’d personally say the NC is the ‘best Miata’ when it comes to sports car basics but it’s also helped substantially by the aftermarket, something the ND is lacking at this time.

@@VictorPitstopThat’s a good point. I think if the ND had the aftermarket to push it more towards the NC it would be more ideal. Unfortunately it’s really hard to mod the ND to be as characterful as the NC. Can’t do anything about the steering and the engine you have to spend big money on something like the BBR 220 which I’m not sure if it works with US ECUs. But the ND suspension is tuned amazingly for the street. It’s totally dailyable from a suspension comfort perspective

It's possible to play all UA-cam videos at 0.75x speed.
I can't imagine someone will change their whole way of speaking like that.

You could turn on the closed captioning too. I do that even being a native English speaker. I’m Southern, so I I speak a little slower.

@JJF1973 great suggestion. You can even auto-translate the closed captions to another language (eg one's native language).
