    Great idea! I bought laminate flooring that was on sale and just put it under the chair by itself (with just the joints holding it together) and so far it's been working okay but it warps a little so I think I'll try gluing it to some osb like this, if I can find it. I had trouble finding it last time I looked for it wider than 4 feet in width. thanks!

    Great project. We just moved to a new house and the room that I'm dedicating to my craft room has brand new carpet. I thought of ripping it out and have a new laminate floor installed. But, It's a 15X15 room and well, I hate to waste that new carpet. Your project has certainly inspired me, but I think I'm going to make mine 8' X 8' square (two 4x8 sheets of OSB) to go under my 48" square sewing table and still leave room for my rolling fabric cutting table. I noticed my local Lowes has a big clearance section with some laminate in it. Hoping to check that out this weekend. Thanks again for sharing your project and how it was done and thanks for your service. My husband is a 24 year USAF veteran, too.

      Hey, glad you enjoyed the video. Also, Thank You for your service as well. What branch btw? I was 7 years as an EW, Electronic Warfare Tech and left as an E-5 in 1991. I still miss those days actually, and am proud to have served and I honor all those who have, or are serving in defense of our country.
      The other advantage to OSB that I thought of is less chance or warping due to moisture since the strands are random. Plywood is alternate layers going different directions, so a good 2nd choice. And after about 8 months or more, mine is still like new, edges and all. If you want, take a pic when done and send it to me, and I'll feature it in a post somewhere.
      Thanks again, Guy

    Hello Kilted Guy, I am putting together my studio at my daughters home and in looking for the plastic mats, for the size I need it would cost $210.35/free shipping at one place. Uline $180 with $140 shipping. THAT IS CRAZY!!! This is a great idea. It would be cheaper to have a friend make me one. I could do it myself, but I don’t feel like it:))). Can some sort of edging flush with the carpet so as not to trip coming into the room? Thank you.

    I made a wooden floor protector using 1/2" MDF plywood about a year ago. I made the mistake of putting peel and stick tile down at 29 cents a square foot. The tile lasted about 6 months. Then 6 months ago I watched this video, turned the board upside down and did it the correct way, and used the lock flooring at 49 cents per square foot, and haven't had a problem since. Instead of putting a trim around it, I glued the lock flooring down instead, after 6 months it is still working.

      In our town we have a habitat for humanity that sells smaller batches which is where I got this batch. But I found people who are doing their own laminate floors will often give you all their scrap, which works fine for this project. Try running an ad in facebook, craigslist, etc.

  • @gerard4441
    @gerard4441 4 роки тому

    I used peel and stick flooring on cheap 1/2” plywood. Since its plastic, it would be resistant to crumbling/cracking like wooden surfaces, especially cheap plywood. My concern now is stubbing my toe on the edge and the edge deteriorating. I planned to fold the peel and stick flooring over the edge then stapling it to the bottom but its so thick that it causes itself to separate from the plywood on the top side. So i just trimmed the overhanging pieces. I think im gonna get a rubber beveled edge

    I love this idea and it is much cheaper than buying something ugly and expensive. Plus you can cut it to a size you want. I am about to start a job that allows me to work from home and I wil have to use their equipment. So I am building a desk that allows me to have my main computer on one said and my work computer on the other.
    A question in regards to modifying your build: Instead of having those edges that you glued, would there be a way to have no edges and the flooring rounded down towards the floor? Basically allowing the wheels to roll off the matt instead of bumping into a barrier. If that makes sense.

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  3 роки тому

      I put the raised edges on there so that I wouldn’t roll off the edge. Occasionally I still do and it freaks me out because it feels like you’re about to tip over. Plus I put rollerskate type wheels on my chair so it rolls extra easy. But you could with a little imagination do it that way.

    Do you have anything on the bottom of the osb that touches the carpet? Or is it smooth enough that it won't tear or rough up the carpet if it does get kicked/moved by accident?

  • @backatbragg
    @backatbragg 4 роки тому

    I was thinking about doing this for a long time. But my measurements would be 55x72 inches because of two different desks. That’s such an odd size for the standard 4x8 sheet of plywood. What are your thoughts on that measurement of 55x72?

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  4 роки тому +1

      Maybe build 2 smaller ones and slide them together? Otherwise I think you'd have to do something like gluing the flooring to 2 pieces to get the strength, or laminating 2 layers of 1/4", with the top layer 90 degrees to the bottom layer. Good luck!

    I have NO idea how to make the trim?

  • @dakodaspencershmacked181
    @dakodaspencershmacked181 3 роки тому

    Found this helpful, but I have a concern. What about it crushing the carpet?
    The traditional chair mats you get have bumps on them to prevent the mat from crushing the carpet. I'm thinking about building something like this, but adding something to prevent the osb from crushing the carpet.
    I know the normal chair mats are expensive for what they are, but I was thinking about buying one and gluing it to the bottom of the osb. This would keep it from cracking in the future and should last for many years, assuming you build the platform correctly.
    An alternative to buying a chair mat would be those furniture anti-dent carpet protectors you can get from amazon. Just place those through out the bottom of the osb to keep it from crushing the carpet.
    Great video.

    • @nlflint
      @nlflint 3 роки тому +1

      Those little tiny bumps are for grip, not to stop it from crushing. Those bumps are pretty short, like 3/16", they dont reach thru the carpet fibers to the hard floor. This wood mat won't crush carpet any more than the cheap plastic ones. The main weight is your body and the chair, and the large surface area of the mat will distribute the force across all the carpet. This thick wood one is more rigid, so it should distribute the force more evenly than those plastic ones.

    First off, this looks fantastic!
    Congratulations on a job well done!
    I was going to purchase one of those roll up bamboo chair mats, but was put off by the fact that they apparently only come in two colors. The bamboo mats are also $90!
    I love the idea of being able to use wood laminate because of the wider color palette.
    That said, I am a real newbie who only has a handsaw and some determination. I have no workshop or power tools.
    I guess I’m confused as to how the wood laminate actually attaches to the OSB. You made the installation process for the laminate look super easy, but didn’t show the border installation process. Is the laminate only attached around the border?
    Without the workshop or power tools would I be able to buy a border like that and attach with gorilla wood glue maybe?
    The border really pulls the whole thing together! I’m about 50/50 if I can actually pull this off and have it look as nice as yours does.
    Appreciate your feedback!

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  5 років тому +3

      Hello, and thanks for asking about this project. Without power tools you can cut the laminate with a plastic miter box and handsaw like this one- amzn.to/2UQtEZq. As for attaching to the osb, I didn't actually attach them, I used the border trim to hold them on, but you could just glue them to the osb. I built one once before that I simply didn't trim, and I used wide flat screws to just screw each end on, which gave an industrial look to it, so you could do that.
      Otherwise, maybe you can find someone who can put a rabbit joint in the trim pieces using a jointer, router table, or table saw? OR, you can by some outside corner moulding that's ready to go, like this example on Amazon- amzn.to/2N00Uuk. But you should be able to buy it a lot cheaper locally. Or just put a flat piece of 1x wood along the edges, at the same height as the laminate, and it will look trimmed.
      It's really not that hard. If you need more detailed help I can do a quick video, or drawing, but that would come through my advice page at: www.thatkiltedguy.com/advice-page
      Hope that helps, Guy

    Same thought as See had below! I had to get a new chair and it won't roll for hardly anything and all the exiswting mats are expensive/wont last long so off to googling I went and found this. The mat you made looks great. How much extra height has it added to the chair? I'm already at a very tight tolerance for clearance for the chair to fit under my desk so may have to shim it up a smidgen depending on how high it gets lifted.

      I actually don't care for stick on tiles. I tried them once on a shop office floor entry section and had some come loose later. So if you try that, I'd get a better adhesive that is mean for flooring tiles, and get the glue on tiles, and just glue them on. I think the issue would be the flexing of the base as it can flex some with just 1/2" plywood.; With the laminate layer over it, mine flexes very little and after 2 years, it's as good as new. But it might work to glue them on. If you try it, let me know how it comes out.
