All the information about Karlini were completely wrong, except the name (correct name is Ludvik Trnka) and the dates of his birth and death. Karlini was the most famous Czech (not Dutch) magician and was touring with his great show thru the Europe after WWII. This poster was painted by Gustav Mezey along with other three posters which are not that famous like this one in 1946 when Karlini was touring in Austria. Later Karlini´s son (George Trnka) was performing Jupiter dog act (originally also part of Karlini´s show) in Hollywood palace in 1965 and brought with him to USA many copies of this poster. That is the reason why this poster is in almost every magic collector´s collection...

I'd just say,it's a great poster,it's actually from the 1930s so it's an authentic piece of history featuring a man who courageously worked with the French Resistance against the Nazis. You got it for free,if you sold it you'd still get more than you paid for it.I'd value it for the artwork and for the subject's willingness to put his life on the line in a very good cause. If the man helped save innocent lives,he's got my respec!

Karlini may not have been a great magician, but, given the story about being twice arrested by the Nazis and possibly being a member of the French Underground who survived the war, he was evidently a great person. Both the owner and the evaluator are interesting guys also.

No, value is objective, quantified PRECISELY by market prices. You can babble about how someone else should value this poster at $20,000, but it doesn't mean jackshit until you fork out $20,000 of your own money for it.

It’s worth more than that I run an antiques business specialising in Art Deco and in no way is that $1000. The estimation I would put is $6000~7000 due to the size, condition and age. Nearly all genuine posters from the era are going for that price and ocean liner adverts much more!

It's unfortunate that they both began with a negative comment regarding the man's talent. That wasn't necessary. Karlini must have been doing something right, though, to have his likeness and name associated with such a breathtaking piece of period artwork!

It wasn't a tribute to him, it was his own advertising ... so, no, it doesn't mean he must have been doing something right, it just means he had an advertising budget

Comment about Karlini´s activity in France during the WWII is nonsense (I know that there is short article about Karlini somewhere on the internet with these information, but it is not true). I have tracked Karlini´s whole life and he spent WWII in Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia performing magic with his wife (until the entertainment was forbidden).

I thought at first glance it was the Joker. Doesn't it look a lot like the Joker? I wish I knew what the things I have are worth and when is Antiques Roadshow coming to Buffalo or Rochester New York? I have a big gypsy little web collection. And I have questions about high quality prints of hers because I didn't want to rip off the stuff on the back of the frames. But if I find something that has a really nice frame it probably is worth something I think. What I don't know is and she's dead if she made fine art prints. I have the outsider number two the movie about Gypsy Lou Webb she was feisty. A drawing and the stamp of hers on the matting. I know that one is real. There's a story on UA-cam about Gypsy Lou Webb it's a really interesting story. The story of her and her husband in New Orleans she sold pictures so he could print his book they were artists in love. she only died a couple years ago. It's not just the things that are important it's the story it's not even the value it's the story that's good. But being kind of not exactly rich it would be nice if I could sell some things and move to a better place in my life because I collected everything
