Must have been a great family to grow up with, Dad loves to read to the kids, mom saves up for 2 years to buy a special gift like that. Their story is worth way more than any painting.
Amen! A family that loved to read. A couple that loved each other to bits. A son who sheds a tear today, thinking of the mother's sacrifice... a great family, no doubt.
I think he became emotional not because of the money but because the valuation affirmed that his parents were intelligent people with good taste and judgement.
Awwwww his mother must of loved her husband dearly I can tell this man is proud of his parents. What a beautiful picture and a great memory to share with everybody thank you.

I love that this wasn't some yardsale find for $10, even though those are fun to watch, but this is a family who all participated in the generous and thoughtful experience of mom treating dad to something special and meaningful. And for it to become the revered and respected piece that it has become is almost the icing on her love for him. From the humbleness of the son I would assume it had greater value to the father than money, because it came from her. And I do love that painting!
Great clip. It's refreshing to see a guest who exchanges quite a bit of information back and forth without interrupting and talking over the appraiser.
Is it a win though? Sentimental value being overruled by cash value is not always a good thing. Having lost both parents myself, there are items they owned that I still have because they are special to me, but I am not sure how I would feel if someone offered my a huge wad of cash to part with them.
@@Karma-qt4ji I think that is part of the tears. He instantly knows he's going to sell it, it is too much money. So there is some sadness there. It could also be relief that it wasn't a lower number he would agonize over... would he sell it for $10k? $50k? Maybe some pride too, that something that was so dear to his parents and him is valued.
What an amazing clip. His reaction and thinking to his parents right away was beautiful. He seemed to grow up in a loving family and you can see they bought up a great man. xx
What a nice gentlemen and quite a storyteller himself. Love his reaction of tears thinking about his great parents and acquiring the painting many years ago.
This gentleman has both intelligence and heart. I am very glad he got such a nice appraisal. I have the feeling he'd never sell the painting for any amount, it means too much to him.
Yeah, that struck me too but there's something kinda' sad about the fact that that it's worth a haul of cash makes him cry ... people's happiness is too bound up in money.
@@firsargentum5920 Yea I don’t think it was the money itself though - more that it was something his parents took effort to invest in, so the fact they would be proud that they did a good thing, was what he liked.

@Polo T I agree with you, he must have done some basic research so surprise wasn't the emotion we are seeing, rather I believe like you Polo, he was simply overwelmed w/ an "official" confirmation. Good Eye Mr. Polo T!
She made a grown man cry! Nostalgia really does have a value...even when it's not a specific price. In this case, it was just unexpected...as usual on this channel!
I like how he takes that astonishing dollar figure and translates it into the real meaning behind the value: that people have been increasingly turned onto illustrations such as this. And how his father would have loved that. And of course momma made a great investment through old-school saving. This was a good one!
What a truly beautiful back story to this paiting. $5 a week for two years is quite a bit of money in the 60's, especially while the painter was still living, which i assume cause they went to his studio to get it. For someone to plan a gift a few years ahead of time, has got to hold tremendous value, priceless is what id say. Thanks for sharing
What a genuine man... his initial response being that his parents would be floored over the value rather than considering how much it was worth to sell off.
The guy gets choked when he hears the valuation and refers to his father, this always chokes me too. You can’t beat the Antiques roadshow for excellent interesting viewing.

One of the best reaction right next to that one girl with the oil painting of those Sioux Indians riding through a mountain. It was valued a few hundred thousand dollars and she starts crying. Then it goes to this man, then it goes to that one hippie with the Rolex watch worth 700 to 800 thousands which he flops to the ground. Those are the top three best reactions.
@Paul Steinwall Those are the top 3 reaction especially that girl with the oil painting of the Sioux warriors, I watched that one at least 10 times. Because of this episode.
@Paul Steinwall I agree, they are probably briefed on the specifics of their piece, except for the value. And that young lady with the Indian oil painting is the perfect example. I remember as a young ' army ' bride, in 1969, having a an allowance book to draw my housekeeping money ( as soldiers could be sent off at short notice ). For once an owner who seems thrilled for the sake of his family. And not simply because he immediately wants to sell it. Major props.

Exactly. Found myself wishing him all fine things, but think he's already blessed.

Sounds like he had a nice family too. I'm happy for him and I hope he got a good chunk of change if he decided to sell the painting.
