Hey brother, thank you for sharing. my wife and as of today my wife had a hard time opening the door. Luckily for her, I always open the door for her if I am not carrying something on both hands, Today, I could not open it from outside. After watching your video, I checked to make sure the rods were not bent and they were not, I showered them with DW40 and now she can open the door with just her pinky. YOU ROCK KID!
Most of this video didn't really pertain to my situation... however one small part was incredibly helpful; the part where you removed that inner metal bracket so you could better access the actual doorjamb latch mechanism. That part saved me a TON of time and frustration. For that, I thank you!
I only have this problem with the door locking itself when it gets below freezing. I am going to take a look at this when it’s warmer out. I unlock the door with key and pull handle and the door locks it’s self. I have been looking for a video of this problem and this is the first I’ve seen about it.
Liked and subscribed .......man I watch thousands of vids.....I am addicted to youtube......your teaching and tone is top notch A#1 bingo bango bongo. Thank you!!!!
This video helped out a lot!! Was having this issue and it was causing me a big headache. Parts where bent and needed some lube and that's it...no need to buy a new expensive part
I put off trying to fix this and now the *passenger door will not open* and I can't remove the panel to get inside to fix it. Any suggestions? I have a 1999 Tacoma PreRunner.
@@Troy_Sent_A_Message I was prepared to remove both seats and the center console in order to have enough room to get in there to remove the panel, but even then I'm afraid it would have been a tight fit getting it out of there. Instead I got really really lucky. I stood outside and either used the key or the remote to repeatedly lock and unlock it while holding the handle in just the right place until I could feel it start to grab. Sometimes when I would lift the handle it would push the lock back down. But if you don't lift the handle up all the way eventually you'll get it to come up enough where it'll just barely grab and the door finally opened. I wish I could post some pictures and then I could Point some things out, but none of those matter because they're more about fixing the problem after you get the door panel off. Hope that helps and you get lucky like I did, it sure beats the alternative!
I have the same issue but can’t even get the door open to get the panel off. I’ve gotten the panel up and over the lock to get my hand back there but how do I get the door open
Thank you very much , mine was doing the same thing but the little rod wasn't bent so I was confused for a bit I just sprayed some Wd40 and that did it .
@@DrefDref-q4p They are Ion Alloy wheels, they were the closest to TRD wheels I could find at 1/3 the price. I did however have to fabricate the center caps to resemble TRD wheels.
@@gofast228 At the moment, I'm finding the top of the rod impossible to remove from the door handle, and I've got the plastic clip disengaged. But when I pull the rod away it's not coming out of the hole, and the horizontal lever it attaches to has a ton of play in it, exacerbating the problem. I hate this defective design. They should have recalled this years ago.
Aaaand prying with a long skinny screwdriver popped the plastic retainer free of the handle mechanism. whereupon I learned the handle mechanism is broken. The horizontal level in "part 2" at the end of the video is supposed to be secured in a sort of plastic eyelet on he other end, as shown in the video. Mine broke there. Door handle still worked, but not great. Now to find a replacement and swap the lock over.
@@thenexthobby If the rod clip is disengaged and won't slide out, good chance the ear is bent and binding. I recommend a trim removal tool or a flat blade screwdriver to pry rather than pull and not break anything

My advice would be to make sure the mechanism is 100% clean and free of debris, I use spray on lithium grease
Yo I can't open the door so how do you get the panel off
How did you flatten the bend, just hammer it or pliers?

You can’t remove the side bolt if you door doesn’t open?
Ok but howww do you open the door.
I got in through passenger door and held it unlocked and opened from inside

04 tacoma passenger door cannot open both inside and outside, lock handle stays lock... trying to figure out ... btw great video
Did you figure it out? I have the same issue
@@joryhaskell5601 same, did you figure out?
Thank you. Your video was exactly what was wrong with my truck.
Awesome video very helpful thank you. I just replaced my handle but door still won’t open rod was bended.
This video helped me solve the problem with my door since it was broken into, thank you very much.
Accountability.... if these politicians would make thieves accountable for their crimes, we wouldn't be overwhelmed with break-ins and thefts
That's a lot of work thanks for the video

Thank you for the video, Toyotas are amazing!
How did you straighten out that slotted linkage?
Something that badly bent, and then bent back, becomes weak and will bend again unless the root cause is addressed.
This is a 20 year old truck. " Bend It back" will do just fine 👍🏼
What cause it to bend ?
Nice video Did you just straighten it out or buy new parts ?
My old lady always slams the door. I really need a new one, but until she is gone I'm gonna try and fix this one, thx
Where did you get those wheels on the 4Runner from?

Thank you! I have a different problem but your video serves as an excellent reference!
Most important part was to show how you straighten. It out
“Toyota Tacoma door won’t open”
Starts with door open. 😒
Pretty stupid
Well done .... Thank You
Thank You solved my problem!
Very well explained.
THANK YOU!
Did you have to remove the bent rod to straighten it out? Great video, very informative! Thanks!
you don't have to, but it is a lot easier if you do
