Something that's undeniably impressive about Dolly's songwriting is that anyone could sing them and it would sound like they're singing about their own life in a very personal way.

As a heads up that’s three different effects. Reverb, autotune, and chorus. All three together make it sound natural. Take one out and you’ll have his natural voice. The chorus makes it sound crisp. You’ll hear “s’s” pronounced a bit more with chorus. Autotune makes it sound as though he’s talking through a radio hosts microphone. And then reverb gives him the echo. Those three are appealing because he’ll never be able to sing a bad note. Physically impossible as long as he’s close to the right pitch. It is audible though that he does sing Jolene out of tune at least once or twice. I will say that he should do more but needs to lose all the correction tools. I want to hear his natural voice not audio edited.

You're very right! As a fan of classic country, it's really folks like him + the indie/alt-country scene that are producing the real stuff, not the Nashville establishment.
Lil Nas X has genuinely come so far in such a short amount of time. Montero is by far my favorite album this year - and that says a lot. Very proud of what he has accomplished and even what he has done behind the scenes. Cant wait to see what the future holds.
It's his sincerity. Even though it's catchy as hell, his music is also unapologetically raw. He has so much talent and presence, and I'm always so stoked to see what he does next. And also, he's being controversial, honest, risk-taking and authentic, and still succeeding, and that is the best part of it all. His fearlessness makes me want to support him any way I can. I love how without changing a single word the song takes on a whole new meaning. In the original it feels like the antagonist is Jolene trying to take her man but here I feel like it's "the man" taking both Jolene and the singer for a ride, probably seeing dudes behind Jolene's back but not having the courage to come out and make a commitment.
@user-qv2qf1jk5o ??? No one said anything about how being bi is wrong (it's not) or about how the singer is or is not bi. The implication from the song is that the singer's gay The unnamed "guy" can be a morally grey character, seeing others behind Jolene's back, without that having anything to do with someone being "biphobic". I am really not sure what you're talking about
He starts by collabing with Billy Ray, then moves on to his daughter Miley, then goes on to cover her godmother’s song. This man’s out here playing 6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon through the whole music industry with killer songs!
So many people can’t even see how inspirational he is and how much he changed the game with incorporating country and winning so flawlessly at it…because they can’t see past his outward pride in who he is as a person and his sexuality
Is this forreal? Hate to sound like a hater but I really don't see what was special about this performance? Love him but this showed no vocal ability at all.
Lower register, slower tempo, low volume on the back up singers. Heavy percussion and some smooth guitar work. As much as I love the original. The music is an afterthought. It's so strongly vocal forward that she could sing it a capella and no one would notice. This version brings out a whole different vibe because it's been reworked to be a more balanced track.
Of course, that wouldn't be possible. The cover sounds nice, but don't forget that this isn't Lil Nas's voice what you hear. He only does the articulation, the rest is fully autotuned and lowered. Have you actually heard his voice before?
His understated delivery is absolutely stunning, heartbreaking, and mesmerizing. I love him more with every song he puts out. He defies stereotypes and I'm here for it!
The fact that he has butterflies everywhere as an homage to Queen Dolly is awesome. The more I see of this young man, the more I love him. Be you, My Love.
I think this is a really nice stripped-down version of the song. It doesn't have the soaring desperation that a more conventional cover may have, but there is a kind of quiet sadness to it that's beautiful.
I've listened to every version of this song I can get my hands on. There is just something so plaintive and heartbroken about the lyrics that they require revisiting, and he did such a great job of communicating those feelings while adding his own style.
It's rich and thick like peanut butter when he's singin. His rapping is different and just as golden as his singin just don't know how to word how it sounds
I can see a whole story via his way of storytelling… Nas’s character is in love with a bisexual guy and Jolene brought out all the insecurities he got in his relationship. I love this version so much.
You know music is done right when it makes you feel something, and this guy sings it like he means it (great voice too). I think Dolly would love this cover.
This is incredible, I can see glimpses of the man he’ll be when he’s older here, it’s exciting to think of the versatility of all the music he’ll make as he matures!
This is a FASCINATING take on Jolene, clearly informed by Nas' range and experience. The tone feels almost akin to a small town gay man losing the only bi man in town to a girl because it's "easier this way, no matter how much I love you", at least, that's the way the defeat and resignation in his voice as he sings "please don't take him just because you can" reads to me. Gotta say, enjoyed this a great deal more than I was expecting, Jolene is a tough song to cover given Dolly set the bar so high!
Dolly Parton is clapping and crying happy tears right now, i guarantee it. Why? Because she LOVES when people take her music and make it their own and she doesn't have a hateful bone in her body! This was gorgeous to watch and hear.
This works on so many levels , it's not even funny. You see a guy who is so desperate to save his relationship with his man that he reaches out to the threat to that can ruin it, begging her to leave them alone because it's pretty much all that he has and doesn't know what else to do. Such a powerful rendition of this song. I love it.
When he sings like this, it feels like he's lived a thousand years. How is someone so young this adept at tapping in to deep mysteries of the human experience? Even that "silly" horse song got right to the mysterious, lonely, toxic-but-addictive darkness that still fills the rural west...
Being Black, gay, and from Atlanta will do it. Music is escapism. A form of survival. A release. So proud of LNX.. he represents humans like me so SO well.
While I can not talk for him. For me it was from hiding myself and pretending to be the good son. Between the many faces and loosing people early on in life. I learned how wisdom comes.
I come from a very conservative country where it's all too common for loving gay couples to break apart because one dude's parents forced him to marry a woman. You can't compare this to Dolly's version, but hearing Nas -- a gay man -- begging a woman not to take away the only love he'll ever know just hits too close to home.
I loved hearing his gentle southern twang. My new favorite. Now I want him and Dua Lipa to do something awesome bc she has those sinuous sensual moves and an incredible charisma singing with others. She is not a fabulous singer or dancer but she can GIT IT. With LNX, that would be a combustible combo. Just a thought bubble...
I've always wanted a male cover of Jolene, one that I could sing along to! This exceeds all my expectations, he not only granted my wish but put a new spin on it! 😍
My takeaway: It's definitely what I'd deem a transformative cover. ignoring the obvious context shift toward reimagining the narrative as a bisexual interracial love triangle. (That's relevant and interesting, but also the low hanging fruit) Dolly's original version is so heavily vocally driven that the music is almost an afterthought. His lower register and slightly slower tempo, electric guitars that would be perfectly at home with Nancy Sinatra's rendition of Bang Bang and the heavier emphasis on the percussion all work to deliver a completely different emotional tenor. Dolly gave us a narrative of burning desperation. Scrambling to salvage the relationship. LNX gives us the empty ache of a despair already beyond salvation, already knowing that the damage is done and there's no going back.
@@rickderby2212 every time I listen to it I keep coming back to the guitar. It reminded me of *something* and it was driving me crazy that I couldn't immediately place it. After about 10 or so times it finally clicked. Of course going back and listening to Bang Bang again (I kind of had to at this point) there's a lot more distortion than I initially recalled, but yeah, this does have the same sort of haunting, wandering tone as BB.
You are so spot on about the Nancy Sinatra Bang Bang guitars. And this: "LNX gives us the empty ache of a despair already beyond salvation, already knowing that the damage is done and there's no going back." Damn.

My recently departed partner of 25 years lived with this name her entire life and had a complex relationship with the song. Listening to this cover now makes me miss her even more because I wish I could share it, but it came 5 months too late.
I was skeptical about this guy - Old Town Road had ONE HIT WONDER written on it in 50 foot high flashing letters - but this seals the deal that those first impressions may have been totally wrong.
Agreed. I was worried because it was so popular, and he was so young, and yeah, "one hit wonder" all over it. But "Montero" squashed those fears under its foot, thank goodness.
He’s incredibly talented, he’s one of the few mainstream people who actually writes his own lyrics AND is just really good at singing and rapping and doesn’t rely on talking about disgusting stuff or drugs and money for his material. You know, between resurrecting Billy Ray Cyrus's career and this, Lil Nas X is a surprisingly dignified country musician in a very undignified era of country music.
You're very right! As a fan of classic country, it's really folks like him + the indie/alt-country scene that are producing the real stuff, not the Nashville establishment.
@Not Thatname You could say a lot of things about his rap career, but I think that's fair to say about his forays into country music.

Bro I think that’s just biphobia
@user-qv2qf1jk5o ??? No one said anything about how being bi is wrong (it's not) or about how the singer is or is not bi. The implication from the song is that the singer's gay
The unnamed "guy" can be a morally grey character, seeing others behind Jolene's back, without that having anything to do with someone being "biphobic". I am really not sure what you're talking about
He starts by collabing with Billy Ray, then moves on to his daughter Miley, then goes on to cover her godmother’s song. This man’s out here playing 6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon through the whole music industry with killer songs!
That sounds like 6 degrees of Dolly Parton. Which honestly is legit.
*Godmother!
That made me giggle. It's definitely 6 degrees Kevin Bacon kind of thing.
Dolly is Miley’s godmother?? Lucky lol
So many people can’t even see how inspirational he is and how much he changed the game with incorporating country and winning so flawlessly at it…because they can’t see past his outward pride in who he is as a person and his sexuality
Sheesh. He sang this like he already knew his man was lost to Jolene.
That is the story line...begging/pleading "Jolene" to walk away. Lil Nas X's conversation sounds more masculine...explanatory and reasoning.

Lower register, slower tempo, low volume on the back up singers. Heavy percussion and some smooth guitar work. As much as I love the original. The music is an afterthought. I think this is a really nice stripped-down version of the song. It doesn't have the soaring desperation that a more conventional cover may have, but there is a kind of quiet sadness to it that's beautiful.

ua-cam.com/video/KusJPhptgTg/v-deo.html
This is a FASCINATING take on Jolene, clearly informed by Nas' range and experience. The tone feels almost akin to a small town gay man losing the only bi man in town to a girl because it's "easier this way, no matter how much I love you", at least, that's the way the defeat and resignation in his voice as he sings "please don't take him just because you can" reads to me. Gotta say, enjoyed this a great deal more than I was expecting, Jolene is a tough song to cover given Dolly set the bar so high!
"it's just a headline, it can't emotionally destroy you"

This works on so many levels , it's not even funny. Such a powerful rendition of this song. I love it.

I honestly was like I won't. I would never trouble his man. To all Jolene's we will leave LNX's man alone!!!
This is actually a beautiful rendition. The way he stares at the camera in the beginning and mouths Jole-e-ene.
When he sings like this, it feels like he's lived a thousand years. How is someone so young this adept at tapping in to deep mysteries of the human experience? Even that "silly" horse song got right to the mysterious, lonely, toxic-but-addictive darkness that still fills the rural west...
I just started feeling mature and grown at 30. I don't get it either.
Wtf
Being Black, gay, and from Atlanta will do it. Music is escapism. A form of survival. A release. So proud of LNX.. he represents humans like me so SO well.
While I can not talk for him. For me it was from hiding myself and pretending to be the good son. Between the many faces and loosing people early on in life. I learned how wisdom comes.
You nailed that. And you write pretty well yourself my friend:)
I come from a very conservative country where it's all too common for loving gay couples to break apart because one dude's parents forced him to marry a woman.
You can't compare this to Dolly's version, but hearing Nas -- a gay man -- begging a woman not to take away the only love he'll ever know just hits too close to home.
I didn't think about it like that. Thanks for the perspective
Awww no really tho!! 😩
Where are you from? Because I am from a similar country as well

My takeaway: It's definitely what I'd deem a transformative cover. ignoring the obvious context shift toward reimagining the narrative as a bisexual interracial love triangle. (That's relevant and interesting, but also the low hanging fruit)
Dolly's original version is so heavily vocally driven that the music is almost an afterthought.
The fact you used Nancy Sinatra's Bang Bang as a comparison. I'm very impressed!
@@rickderby2212 every time I listen to it I keep coming back to the guitar. It reminded me of *something* and it was driving me crazy that I couldn't immediately place it. After about 10 or so times it finally clicked.
