I'm always glad to not have genderswapped lyrics. It doesn't matter if you're gay, straight, or pan when you sing Jolene she stole your man and you're gonna sing that with your God damn chest
Jolene is a blight upon all of our lands, we have to unite against her
Best thing about Jolene is it always comes across as queer. If it's sung by a man, he's worried about losing his man. If it's sung by a woman, there's some real sapphic undercurrents between her and Jolene. And if it's sung by someone non-binary, well it's just completely queer at that point.

Not sure where you got that I hate women and/or lesbians. I am both, and I usually manage not to hate myself too too much.
As for the "queer reaching", it literally is a song of her spending paragraphs describing how beautiful another woman is. I'm certainly not saying Dolly Parton is gay, but even she acknowledged that it's understandable why people heard it that way and thinks it's a "fun" read on the song.
It can effect the connotation of some songs in which it sounds way creepier. The original I love rock and roll sounds so much creeper than the cover. That being said not changing it still adds a story to it. I definitely like this one. It could be jilted lovers of the man/ men Jolene took or of multiple friends talking about their friend marrying Jolene and they are no longer able to see him. Words and culture are a wonder in this world.

I get what you mean, and of course you're right, but the funny thing is that genderswapping the lyrics would only make Jolene gay/bi, and the singer's girlfriend bisexual, so it's a win no matter what 😁

All I can think about is that this girl walks into a ranch town full of bisexual men and flirts with them and they have a town meeting or a group meeting and they are just like “please leave the town Jolene you are messing up the whole towns relationships 😂 “ it’s a great cover though I love the way the vocals mix together and the instrumental is so nice with the vocals

I'm not a huge country music fan but since finding the Caleb/Jon collaboration of "Country Roads" only recently I was kinda hoping to hear them do something more country style again as I thought their voices worked so well on it. This more gentle country style hit the spot. Great work, fellas ☺

Today marks one year I lost my dog Storm. She was 16 and I had her since she was a baby. Hearing three of my favorite singers performing one of my favorite songs really helps the pain!

@@fallenpoet6051 She was very calm and sweet. I remember when I had to get all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed at once, I was in terrible pain. Storm came into my room, hopped on my bed, and would stay there with me. Giving me kisses and helping me out. She wouldn't even come out if my mom called her.

The story in my head now:
Old west settlers. A working community- maybe farms, maybe the railways, maybe mining. Something happens, and it is all men. Not actually too uncommon.
Well, this little town quietly went full Greek soldiers, and are just falling in love with each other in pairs and groups, all the while always talking like one day there will be “a real town” with wives and kids.
The first woman comes out there (let’s guess her profession, shall we?) name Jolene. Cue absolute townwide gay panic. Is he going to leave me???? Is today the day? Am I supposed to be attracted to her? I am right?
And no one is actually talking to each other. Just quietly suffering in their own heads and pretending everything is fine.
How it ends depends on if you like romantic comedies or tragedies.
Either way- it would be an interesting story!

Those harmonies are hitting just right, feeling them in my soul. Stunning cover.
This cover is really interesting, especially because the lyrics weren't genderswapped. Keeping them as they are, and assuming a somewhat historic-ish setting due to the country sound, we get the story of a gay man who is afraid he'll lose the one partner that he can be honest with. In 20th century rural America a man like him has a very slim chance of finding another lover, while the (presumably) straight or bi Jolene can be (at least partially) open about herself and thus has much more options. It transforms the song from a ballad about jealousy and "only loving the one" to a lament for a tiny pocket of honesty and love in a world that forces you to lie about yourself. Of course, that's mostly subtext and projection, but it feels very powerful to me.

I kinda interpreted this in 2 ways that kinda fit in my head
1. Caleb is pleading to Jolene to not take his man (Jonathan Young) while Jonathan is telling Jolene that their situation is keeping Caleb up at night while Jolene (Thomas) is recounting the events of what has happened between the couple (as either the personification of Jolene or as a victim/past victims)
I kinda see Thomas as Jolene here, each time he says Jolene could be explained as either him saying "me, Jolene" (stating his name as Jolene) or as reading a letter addressed to Jolene (himself)
