Stuck Bicycle Cassette Lockring: Forget the Chain Whip

- Walking through my local Walmart I noticed, hanging on a display, an auto oil filter tool for $3. It said adjustable jaw grips wrench 2.75-3.75 inches from Hyper Tough used to remove auto oil filters. I thought that may make a great replacement for my bike rear cassette removal chain whip. I thought it might be easier to use then the usual chain whip to remove a stuck lockring. So, I bought it here's what I found.
Place your cassette removal tool on the cassette (cog set) held loosely with the wheel skewer without its springs. With the oil filter removal tool, make sure that it's grabbing the same parts of the selected chain ring at the handle and end. Using an adjustable wrench on the cassette ring removal tool, attach an adjustable wrench as such and squeeze the handles of the tool together. When you feel it give, stop and remove the tools, skewer and lift off the cassette. I see no damage to the cassette teeth. It's easy and cheap and works on SRAM, Campagnolo, Shimano or Suntour (provided you use the proper lockring tool as described in the Park Tool video shown). For $3, it's a nice addition to my bicycle tools for bicycle repair and maintenance for road bikes, mtb, and trail bicycles.

Note: Some other tools are available to remove a cassette lockring such as the Park CP-1.2 - Cassette Pliers, but in my experience, nothing beats the oil filter wrench (when a chain whip will not do the trick), appropriate Park lockring tool, and an adjustable wrench.
I literally have an Effing stuck lockring on a used bike I just bought. Didn't budge no matter how I tried using a chainwhip with nut wring tool... And this's after i had already just opened 3 other cassettes so that i can swap them accordingly. So, here I am trying to get some alternative ideas.
The verdict so far... for a truely stuck lockring--Use An Impact Wrench, which works instantly in seconds!! 😂
But I consider your cheap method at the moment. Thank You!! 🎉
Do you still require a chain wip to hold the cassette when using an impact wrench on the lockring tool?
Wow this is a very cool idea & alternative, thanks
Your welcome. Surprising how easy it worked when other methods failed. Now the oil wrench is a permanent part of my tool box.

I'd still wear my old pair of motorbike gloves with knuckle protectors.
Good point. Viewers should note this. Regards, Tony
That is in no way a stuck cassette lockring 😂 Nice video though.
It was stuck and we used this method on this cassette to see if it would free it up (before we shot the video), and it did. We re-enacted the procedure on the same cassette for the video so others could see what we did. Good eye. Regards, Tony
