I really liked Jiraiya as a character because he felt like a true ninja. No Dojutsu or Bijuu BS, just a well rounded arsenal fitting for a ninja of legend.

Jiraiya probably halted training Naruto because of the fact that he had to go against his four tails transformation at one point during training. He was probably looking for something that could prevent him from getting overtaken by the nine tailed fox (at that point he didn't know Tenzo/Yamato existed)

People severely underestimate Toad Mouth Trap and Swamp of the Underworld. Toad mouth trap can be conjured out of thin air. So as long as you’re in close proximity to Jiraiya, he can just simply put your ass in the stomach. Then it’s probably game over for 95% of the Naruto universe. Swamp is extremely underrated. He was in his BASE form at only ~30% chakra capacity and still conjured a swamp big enough to subdue 2 medium-sized snakes. Imagine if Jiraiya was in Sage mode and had 100% chakra. I have no doubt the Swamp would be big enough to engulf a tailed beast almost instantaneously.
Fighting Orochimaru is like fighting bunch of anacondas. Fighting Tsunade is like fighting muscle brute healer. But fighting Jiraiya is like fighting a fking smart natural disaster.
Unfortunately Jiraiya's enemy is too overpowered because he can absorb Chakra attacks and many other Rinnegan abilities. It feels unfair, he should still be able to escape from Pain. But jiraiya preferred to die at the hands of enemy

But Jiraiya's genjutsu counter technique so op that it can basically breaks even the stongest genjutsu and mind control type jutsu. The technique is so simple yet so incredibly hard to use. Jiraiya taught Naruto this and Naruto used this against Itachi. Itachi was surprised when he saw Naruto could use such high level technique. Itachi said this technique couldve breaks his genjutsu if its Jiraiya, Naruto failed because he is not skilled enough. When Kabuto said he wanted to have edo Jiraiya too if possible and Obito said "dont push your luck". This is because despite he could be a huge powerhouse in the war for them, knowing he could potentially break free of the edo tensei, its a huge risk. Dont forget, Kabuto dont really need a body. Just any cell belonging to the user is enough. Which can be obtain from his shirt and his items. People are saying Itachi dont want to fight Jiraiya because he is a spy for the Leaf. But its not true and never confirmed. Itachi knew most of his arsenal that works best on Orochimaru wont work on Jiraiya. Keep in mind, Jiraiya also had sage mode. Itachi and Sasuke having a hard time dealing with Sage Mode Kabuto who is less experienced than Jiraiya.
