Over $60k for a 4 cylinder turbo is insane. And unfortunately these dumb azz UA-camr are going to hype this thing over imagine to the point dealers will add about $20k markups to an already over priced vehicle. Furthermore keeping this artificial economy a float. I miss the late 90’s early 20’s when people had more common sense and was more financially responsible than they are today.

Thankful to be driving a 5th gen that I bought new for $3K under MSRP a year ago. Not a single issue in 12K miles thus far. Time will tell how these little 4-bangers with turbos hold up. The 3rd gen Tundra's subpar quality has been a real black mark on Toyota the past three years.

agree....the better mpg's on the 4 bangers doesn't matter when they start to break and your spending $1,500 - $3,000 to fix them....which then becomes a wash on paying for extra gas with the 4.0 V6 which is basically maintenance free.

I am Not a believer in the longevity of turbo charging. All this is academic as the price of vehicles today is far above what I am willing to pay. The best bang for the buck would be to buy a brand new 5th Gen 4runner while you still can. Do some research and don't be afraid to go out of town. You can still get one below MSRP. I'm pretty sure the 6th gen pricing will be insane, so that will help raise the value of the 5th gen in the used market if you decide to sell it. You can a also try to find a slightly used 4Runner, but you won't save much of you can find a good deal on a new one sitting on a lot somewhere.

Big problem for me on this new 4 runner
    1. Turbos are pricey to repair, and fast to fail.
    2. 5000+ lbs being hauled with a 4cyl engine that's gonna struggle up hills ( anyone taking these into the mountains?)
    3. computer screens for odometres, glitches, and repairs on screens are very pricey.
    4. Hybrids are amazing for up to 8 years, replacing them is 8-15k depending on labour. 8k for a prius
    5. many electronic controls now 5th gen was old school and easy to repair

      2) this engine has more torque and 8 speeds. It will outperform the weak anemic v6.
      3) solid state electrical will outlive the mechanical.
      4) battery has a 10 year warranty and it is Nimh not lipo.

The manufacturers don't really benefit from low supply, with the exception of not having to offer any incentives.
The real beneficiary of low supply is the dealership, however the dealerships may prefer to find the balance between selling more units at a slightly lower price so as to increase their total number of customers for service and parts business in the future.
So to say that the manufacturer and dealerships are purposely keeping supply low is not 100 percent accurate in my opinion. Having been in the car biz for 25 years or so, we always wanted good inventory of cars that don't sit on the lot, yes we did like high margins on some models but if we only got a few of those models every month it didn't help as much as having more inventory of vehicles that people want to buy.

They are most likely just giving customers what they want as its not hard to do when they are already shipping the twin Lexus to the states anyway. Artificial scarcity is rampant in the car industry now and the only way to stop it is to not give any of these companies your money. Last year I was looking for a sports sedan in the $60-70K range and any car with true value was upcharged regardless of manufacturer. Audi RS3 was my first pick and they wanted $20K over sticker and a 5 month wait bringing it to the price of an Aston Martin or loaded C8 Vette and other "semi-super cars". Instead, they tried to sell me a ton of loaded S3's that were over priced for the performance you got. Every Audi dealer had tons of those. You mean to tell me that Audi can make A3's and S3's but somehow they can't get materials for RS3's? Bull crap.
I went across the street to MB and looked at the CLA45S AMG, Apparently they made 25 of them for the 2024 model- 25 for the entire country. They were happy trying to sell me a CLA35 for the same price, though. Any truly valuable car, meaning something worth the money you pay for it- is not available unless you pay more than it is worth. ALL COMPANIES ARE DOING THIS NOW!
My solution was going to the same Mercedes dealer my parents go to for over 30 years and purchase their CLA35 demo at their dead cost. 3K miles on it and $20K below sticker. MB got no money from me, the dealer I like did. I got a car well below my price range and didn't take part in the nonsense.
Try to buy a Nissan Z, GR Corolla or 86, Bronco, Vette or even a Supra and you will get the same, poor business practices. They make millions of undesirable cars to shove down our throats but make 25 of the cars we all want for the entire country. This is how industries give you less product for more money over time, it's madness and we need to fix it with our wallets by not participating. Wait a year, that car you want will have a few miles on it and cost less.

It's not a bad looker, being outside the US it is weird to see TRD badging on anything in 2024, it's kind of a blast from the past.
Toyota USA shoots itself on the foot by being such a unique outlier. I suspect if they made less models world wide they could do better in terms of inventory. I don't understand why Fortuner and 4Runner cannot be unified, the same applies for Tacome and HiLux. The can have different trim levels, different engines even, even a different nameplate! But right now they have the 4Runner, Land Cruiser Prado, and Fortuner three SUVs roughly the same size.
Same when it comes to pickups, they have the HiLux, the Tacoma, and the HiLux Champ. Theree mid-size trucks.
When it comes to small cars they have the Corolla, the Prius, and the Vios. Again roughly the same size.
I tend to think they should unify, and simplify their offerings.

But for $60K I could build an offroader from scratch on pretty much any body on frame platform. And with all top shelf parts as well. And that including the donor truck and either crate engine or a rebuild. Because face it, you'll dump $20-30K in aftermarket crap onto it anyway.

Toyota might be bumming out potential buyers but they top the list currently of top selling cars in U.S. It’s fellow carmakers are sitting on tons of inventory going over 300 days sitting on lots. Toyota (production) is being smart to put out new vehicles slower, I think. I’m personally not in the market as I have a new 5th gen 4R but Toyota gets new vehicles to fill my local lots and they still sell. Dealers adding mark ups is not cool. But buyers paying those prices will continue to be the problem. I don’t believe Toyota has a volume problem I think if more auto makers followed Toyota the car market would possibly be in a better place. My .02.

I’m upset with the 4runner. my issue is the 3rd row option for they hybrid motor. Thay need to design a 3 row that works with the hybrid. Also i’m not that fond of a 4 cylinder powering it in the first place. Why overload a turbo 4cylinder engine to push this thing around. Gas mileage better be close to 30mpg for this big move to a turbo 4. The limited model seems degraded knowing mostly families buy a limited so the 3 option needs to be there with the hybrid motor option. Other than the engine and the 3 row option i think they did a good job. Let’s just hope the price isn’t the killer of it all. I’ve always been a 4runner buyer but this might push me to getting the Lexus 550 instead. I’ll give it 4 years to work out all the bugs of the new style then make my decision

The engine isn't overloaded. It produces more power more efficiently and has an 8 speed transmission on top of more power lower in the rpm band. It is the v6 with the 5 speed that was overloaded 😂 the gear hunting of the v6 and the meme that it was always towing proved the engine was simply too weak for the job

Don't EVER buy a first year model unless you like being a beta tester. There are so many problems with ALL the new models (Tundras and Tacomas) The new LCs and GXs haven't dropped en masse yet. So we'll see what happens there. Long term reliability is seriously in question. I'm hoping the manufacturing process in Texas and Mexico get their shit together and start working out the kinks. New Tundra engines are dying on the road (literally) and Tacomas have their own issues. Although the 4Runner is being built in Japan, let the first year issues get worked out.
