Yes! It's a great film and good companion piece to Saving Private Ryan. The latter was the only time I started breaking up at a movie.

Definately one of the greatest war movies ever made. May not be accurate in the intensity, but the overall story is well told. 10/10 stars.

At 1:04, Jeffrey Hunter nearly lost and eye, when a small explosive charge, simulating bullet strikes, sent a grain of sand into it. They had to breake the take, but decided to use it, splicing a shot of Robert Mitchum into it, so it would look like Hunter just went on with his job.

My favourite scene is when the guy in the bunker sees the ships on the horizon at the end of his night watch. And Winston the dog..

At 2:40, the German "Fighters" used in the film actually were 4-seat Messerschmitt Bf 108 "Taifuns". In real life, Priller and his wingman flew Focke Wulf 190's. Both survived, not only the day, but the war.

By far, the best World War two movie there is. One of my favorite parts, is Sean Connery screaming "COME OUT YA BASTARDS! FALANGENS BACK!

[Aboard the Free French Navy battleship Richelieu]
Bridge Officer: Attention, attention. Admiral Jaujard.
RADM Robert Jaujard: [addressing Free French forces] Soon we shall engage in combat. In order to defeat the enemy, we must fire on our homeland. This is the price of liberty. Vive le France! Watch how the camera focuses on the Admiral when he speaks, so well done. The price of our liberty isn't cheap, we need to realize this.

I've been putting of watching this film for so many years because I suspected that it wouldn't be a very realistic
depiction of D-day. But I finally watched it today and...well, it's entertaining, but that's all it is.
The cast is monumental, I'll give it that much. But there's not a single drop of blood to be seen (apart from Richard Burton having a little red stain on his leg at the end), and no guts or brain matter flying around a la Saving Private Ryan.
Of course, this was made in 1962 when such depictions of violence would've been impossible. But still, they didn't
have to make up for the lack of realistic violence with fucking camp humor and boys own macho men with cigars!
This is WWII and NOT bloody Alistair Maclean! But oh no, instead we get Sean Connery acting like a buffoon and making
piss-poor jokes about drowning before getting a chance to fight and bagpipes.
The only people who are portrayed with any dignity are the Germans. They don't fool around with crude jokes and macho
speeches. They are trying to stop the invading forces as best they can, and the seriousness of the situation is very well
portrayed, from the sheer unwillingness to believe the nerve of the allied forces, to the poor leadership demonstrated by
high command (Hitler is sleeping. Don't disturb him).
For being a 60's war film, it's not bad. And the production is indeed enormous on every level.
But it's also as flawed and unrealistic as I feared it would be, and I can't, in all honesty, appreciate it as much as I'd
    like as a result.

on the contrary, just beacause it isn't full of gore dosen't mean that it's not realistic

    • @fulcrum7991
      @fulcrum7991 5 років тому +4

Just because they're at war dosen't mean that their robots, look at footage from the war, soldiers fooled around a lot

    • @wilfredkimber8007

Your comments about the realism of this piece really are subjective due to its age, you just can’t compare it to saving private Ryan because they’re about different things released at different times. If this film had the same amount of brutal gore as Tarantino films or saving private Ryan the studio and Hollywood establishment would have simply rejected the scenes or the film as a whole, in the same way they took a long time to come around to nudity and sexual scenes in blockbuster films. Also the comments of it being corny and too jokey are really just a reflection of war films in Hollywood at the time. Most other war films of that era include a huge amount more stupid jokes and heroic speeches and the longest day is a serious film in comparison. You must also think of the time when this film came out. The world wasn’t really ready to fully reflect on the incidents of the war in a cinematic form; compared to how we can view it now with series such as band of brothers and films like hacksaw ridge or even fury, which look at the futility and recklessness of war on both sides. Overall I think this film is a masterpiece of its time and is subjective to its age. The film is not without its flaws, such as making out that there was no plan of how to advance off Omaha beach before landing there or how every soldier just seems to follow their division’s CO around the battlefield. These can definitely be looked past however.

      @@wilfredkimber8007
Another point that has been brought up
is how there's a lack of presence in the film
of the Canadian troops that were involved
& that they were more efficient in landing
in their intended area. I keep wishing
      Criterion would release an edition
of this film & include a mountain
of special features on, say, 3 or 4 discs,
such as the involvement of the Canadians
& also the old "To Tell The Truth" episodes
      featuring the real people portrayed
in the film, such as John Steele
      (played by Red Buttons).
This film is also very notable for portraying
      French & German people speaking
      their actual languages & providing
      subtitles for viewers. Spielberg
should've taken a cue from that.
If he had, I'd have a much higher
      opinion of "Schindler's List".
In any case, I think this film being shot
in b&w serves it very well. Any blood/gore
or death does not show up too well
without the red color & the film overall
      has a more newsreel/documentary feel.
Also, various officers of different kinds
who were actually involved in the events
depicted were hired on as advisors.
Ultimately, the film was a labor of love
for producer Darryl Zanuck, who wanted
to make the depiction of events as close
as possible to the way it really happened.
Considering what he had to work with
& the state of the movie industry
at the time, I think he did a terrific job.
The only overall flaw, I think, is that
      the presentation perhaps features
      too much pride & overconfidence,
but mostly, it's a cinematic masterwork
& needs to be added to both Criterion
(with sufficient accompanying special features) & The National Film Registry.
